Fein .— The late State Fair at Harrisburg was notoriously a failure. Hot addled/ad the enormous puffs bestowpd upon it' y &e l' iladelphla press, it was an abortion, both In the Meagreness of its display and the -lightness of the attendance upon it. Even the. melt heralded visit of President Pierce failed to °drawn_ a Crowd ';' and mortification eat Upon the facts of stivrho were Interested in the matter. The grounds, it was felt, were poarly - , chosen.; . too much space was enclosed ; the display - of all kinds'of stock wus exceedingly - poor; the me chanical department was far from being full; and the ernamental part of the show was sane ly worth, a apnea. ln fact, it hardly reset* the dignity Of .s county fair.; and was excelled, both last year and this, 10 - the fairs held in -this The blaine of this is not tuneable to any of the officers 'Of the Society. They did their there of,,the 'work honestly and faithfully, and no labor was wanting on their part to give success to -the undertaking. A principal \ reason for it, we think, is to be foundin the p aas at which the fair was held: r Harrisburg is net a proper point fontrach an ex-; hibition. in the heart of a good•agrionitu- Tel region, it is true, but s region which has -gib lees atlantib; than others to improvements in, stook redoing ,Ond agricultural experiments ;- and it falls sh'ort in that kind of manufacturing eatiorpriie which seeks such fairs for exhibition. Besides; the town is Ice) small to furnish any thing like the number of eight-seers needed to make such an adventure pay. It is manifest, therefore, that the:extremes of the State, Phila "delphis and Pittsburgh, Are the points for such i'airs. They are easily accessible to stook rais ers; and are both large manufacturing points ; end above all, they are able to furnish crowds . almost, without number frcm which to draw the needed funds. If we are to have a continuation of State Fairs, prudence and every other consider 'Alen admonish their alternation between the two places named, or A division of the State be tween theni and the holding of en annual Far in each. • This coarse has been urged before, and strongly; and we think that the late experience • of • the State Society at Harrisburg should be *inclusive in leading to its adoption. There Is one other reason for the failure at Herrisburg which hoe been presented, and it is not without force, -to wit: that Pairs-hue lost their novelty somewhat, and hence fail to attract as they did at first In proof of this we are referred to the county fairs of the present year, at all points., In each instance the complaint is that the display was smaller than naval and the ..attendance lighter, and we think there can be no _ doubt of the fact. Bill while this is true of county fairs, it doe's not follow that a State Fair, either at 'Philadelphia or Pittsburgh,' would be s. failure, or open to the force of such an objec tion. 1 e election In Cincinnati, Cleveland and Co -1 us passed off very quietly, just as it did in this ty. The weather wits beantlfta and the vote large, showing the prevalence of strong poll cal feeling; bat notwithstanding this th e day ' eased off without a single ,collision and with veil little manifestation of anger or exciter. maul. We have witnensed many elections as quiet; but never epithet went aff so pleasantly to all concerned, under euch circumstances. /II this instance thice wait a deep and settled hoe : dilly beiween the conterdinte which brought out a 411 'vote, and which is ordinarily lacking in 'quiet' elections; and the result is, therefore, a greater cause of gratification. ~ The reason assigned for the quletnees and pleasantness of the election in Ohio de well as here, is the general closing of drinking hoases - throughout the cities. There - was ionseviently no drinking, - and none off the angry quarreling which follows the presence of inebiiated men . . at the polls. In view of such a result, would it not be well to kake some measures for Me perpetuation on similar occlusions ? The closing of the drink ing-houses on the 9th was altogether voluntary; it may be repeated, hereafter, or refused, at will. A little legislation, to which no one would , object, would render it tar the future a matter of obligation, and pat It beyond the reach of any ' contingency. Ramo:nos Bronras.—The defeat of the IL N. ticket lute rendered the.leaders so desper ately pore that they ire morting to their old trick of circulating the basest falsehoods to cover lip their disgrace. Our readers bare no fancy, we know, for reading a more list of democratle" map:nines; end that is all there Is to put down. In Philadelphia the vote for Canal Commissioner is, Nicholson, 24,- 935; .Plamer, 27,454. The whole democratic county ticket is elected.. In the old city, the E. N.'s ,electtwo members, JaCob Dock and E. J. Morris, and the Democrats two, Geo. Smith and A. Coburn. In the old county the democrats elect aikistor and eleven Itepresentatives. Chettei,:DeliSiriLre, Bucks, and nearly all the old Whigconnties in the east elect the demo. credo ticket. In Dauphin the Know Nothings elect two members of the Bosse, and these, with the two in Philadelphia, are all that are certain: The democrats elect &motors in Philadelphia, Ducks, Berke, Toth, Allegheny, Montgomery, Northampton add Lehigh, and Schayklll, certain; and hare probably carded ten of the eleven to be elected this year. The Moue will bo. over whelmingly democratic. Bearer elects the whole demoorstle ticket ; We have= weed yet, from Lawrence and Butler. Offto.—The news from Ohio continues cheer ing. Chase is elected Governor, In spite of the Know Nothinge, and is therefore doubly trium phant. There is probably no other man in the State who could have overcome the odds that were mustered against lint) and it is to the credit of his honesty as a man and a politician that he met WlC:hues of his opponente boldly, and made no effort to lama hie position on any question. Thanks to his energy, the treacher ous plot to defeat him and eo break up the Ee -1 publican movement, hula failed. Lariat-We learned, verbally, last night, that 'Armstreng give' Nicholson 700, Clarion 700, butler 200, Nemerset 700, and Mercer, Indian a and Lawrence also give him large majorities. The Know 'Nothings carry, probably, three mem bers in the 'Mercer district, three in the Clarion district, three in the Butler District; one in Som erset and one in Indiana. They also pick op some other members in some of the north western counties. Cos.
