Shannon has been ap pointed because he will octtoPTite with them. — While we must say that President Pierce has generally "unneeded in making very unfit ap pointments, candor compels the acknowledgment that Wilson Shannon was the very man for the work wanted by the Administration. A despatch from 81. Louie tells us he arrived at Westport on the 81st ult., made a speech, acknowledged thel legality of the Legislature, and avowed him self in favor of Slavery in thS territory! The man, The very man to consummate the villainies of Atchison, Stringfellow and their ruffian com panions! Not only has Goy. Shannon declared his con viction that slavery must be a Payment insti tution there, and that it 'Mould be fostered and aneouraged, - but it is also said by a Washington siorrespondent of the New York \..Nerafd, that his instructions were, to stand by Atchison and Stringfellow, and to oppose the Abolitionists. He is evidently following his instructions to thelet ter; and Shivery is thus to he forced upon Kan sas and the 'free settlers ejected, through the open agency and approval of the Nahum' Ad minhitration. Thus we have the Nebraska bill producing Its legitimate fruits in the hands of its friends. It was a measure designed to extend Slavery—to open the while territorial domain to its Mirees, end prevent the extension of freedom beyond its present limits. The Administration is determin ed to misty oat this design, and the Isom is thus fairly and broadly before the people. At the time of its first appearance we exposed it effectually, and It slept for along while. Bat the late renewal of, the falsehood, and the persistouce in it by those who know better, bakimpreed upon so many credulous people that wengain some foiwarl with the proof to con _found ,our malignert. This coarse has been forced upon us; but we ought not, perhaps, to regret it, since it affords'us the opportunity of publicly confronting a crowd of defamers with evidence of their &handout entire innocenie. Up' to January 20, 1844, the Gazette was owned by the firm of White & Grant. After the election in 1848, when it became probable that Mr. Clay would be the Whig nominee foryresi dent, we made known to Mr. Grant our deter mination to support that gentleman, ebbuld he be nominated. Mr. Grant interposed objections, and to long as he remained an equal partner with 12F. it became impossible to give the paper that tone and position on the Presidential ques tion welch we desired to impart to it - Mr. Grant, however, expressed an anxiety to sell out his interest, and consulted with us as M the terms on which we would egFeli to a disposition of his half of the pew. We gave him is written statemeut of oar tenor, and he at once com menced negotiations with tinumber of his Whig , acquaintances; without communicating the fact to us, And the result was that fifteen of them signed spacer, agreeing to oontritrate two hun dred defiant each to purchase Mr. Grant's in tereet, accompanied with a bond, which was to be presented to us-for signature, binding us to give the support of the paper to Mom Czar. The first inkling which we had of this arrange ment was when the bond was presented to us for eignature. We at once, and peremptorily declined to signit, or to have any thing to do with such an arrangement, and at that 'point the whole affair was dropped. We afterwards pur chased Mr. Grant's interest, giving our Mill, vidnid notes therefor, and these were met, as they became doe, out of the regular proceeds of our business. After the dissolution of partnership between Mr. drint and ourselves, the - Pare of this oily obtained copies of the original paper which was drawn up between Mr. Grant and the fifteen li gentlemen alluded to, and published it, along with the bond which was offered tens, and which we refused to sign. The publication of the first of these two papers in the Post afforded the first opportunity we had ever had of seeing it. Al soon as - these documents were published, the following article appeared In the Gazette, of February 5, 1844, including a statement from Mr. Grant of the whole transaction. We re publish it, now, to put an extinguisher upon the 'calumny which has so long been the staple of our opponents, and to furnish our readers the full history of a transaction of which Many , of them are, probably, unaware" THE POST AND ITS FALSEIIOODS AGAIN. From th. Ettalush Chmetteof Pat3.l*-.1644. The -Pail of this morning contain what it calla its "proof" of its elanderoub charges anahmt the editor of this paper. This "proof" conalsta of two paper:. The fust of them is an obligation, signed by a number of very respectable gentlemen, with the most of whom we have not the pleasure of a personal acquaintance, obligating themselves to be security for the sum of $2OO each to enable us to raise money to purchase out Mr. Grant's interest. This paper we never saw before it was published in the Post, though we knew of tho existence of some paper on the lob- Jan, the. contents of which were not oommuni cated to no. This paper does not state that we had agreed to support the Whig candidate •for a consideration," bat merely state, that we had agreed to support the Whig nominee. The second pager, which the Post calls a "bill of sale," is a bond which was intended to bind us to support the Whig nominee, while the money provided for in the first instrument re mained unpaid. This instrument was laid before us, and we refused to sign it. The truth is, the whole matter, from begin ning to end, was begun and carried on without any consultation with us, and had .it been per fected, it was then to be laid before us for our approval or rejection. Mr. M. M. Grant, our former partner, who was intimately ar.qUainted with the whole mat ter, and who was anxious to sell his interest, hes just banded us the following Wintrni—On coming to the city this morning, I find in the Pest what professes to be a copy of the "Card" he has been promising for several days, with the "bill of sale which D. N. White was to have given" to the signers. What notice you intend to take of the article In the Poet I know trot; but as I shall not be in the city *when. your paper will be Issued, I here by furnish you with a etatemest of facts in rela tion to that '"Card," with a copy of it, to be used as you may think proper. In October last, one of the gentlemen whose names are given in the Pon, spoke to me about purchasing my interest in the Gazette, and I pro. cured from you a letter stating the terms on which you were willing I should sell, in which it was expressly stipulated that you were to have the sole • control dt the paper with , the privilege Of becoming the purcha;er of the whole at the expiration of two years, if you so wished at that time. As you have the original of this letter in your pots's:don, you can refer to it, If necessary. I banded this letter to the person who bad spoken to toe, and, in a meeting with some of his friends, soon after, the "Card" was-gotten up without commitime either you of me. There is nothing in"that document, so far as I can discover, of which any honest man need be ashamed; but whatever may be thought of of it, you ehould not be either commended or condemned on account of •it; as I have reason to believe you never saw it until it appeared In the Port; and I know you never approved of its cir culation, lest it might be misunderstood or mis represented. The dooument referred to In the Pod as the "bill of sale" you refused to sign on account of the pledge it contained, at the was th..te "eying you were willing to adhere to the propositions contained in .your letter. Although I-do not know that the public is particularly interested In our private affairs, yet I am perfectly willing to satisfy any "busy body in other men's matters" who will call upon me that there no hold upon the "fifteen Whigs," or any other person, than yourself, for one dollar on account of the purchase of my Interest in the Gaeta Respectfully, &o , M. The same statement was made to H. W. Stephens, the only mre'of the gentlemen named by the Port; with whom we conversed on the subject. Having thus explained the whole matter, we again reiterate our assertion, that the statement of the Post that we agreed to support the Whig candidate for a consideration, to be a vile, un principled falsehood. The publication of these doenments, In 1844, put an effectual stop, for that time, to the dory now so industriously revamped, and can not fail to have the same result now. . The offer of the fifteen Whig geiitlemen was, as we have said before, very kindly meant, 'and was just as firmly„declined by is. So far, how *aver, from being an offer to, buy us over to the support of Clay, it was designed to buy out a partner who opposed no in our determination to support that statesman. It was the coftsequenee instead of 'the cause of our friendliness to him; and its purpose was simply to remove the obsta ales which an objecting partner Interposed, It was an offer made, moreover, without any Pre vious consultation with as and for which we were not, therefore, in any measure, responsible; and having declined it promptly, the moment it was proposed to us, we are innocent of any par ticipation in, or connection with it. We have thus Oared OatllolY6s right with our readers. We shall not disappoint ourselves with lOoking for thejostice of a correction from those who have been itstromental in deceiving the public with a falsehood; but we shall at least have the satisfaction of knowing that they have one weapon less for the present. Corre@pandene. of thi Daily Pittatursbnamme. WEItG sTATB UARZISBI7IO, September 11. Mn. Enron.—The Convention met at 10 re.- clock in the Hall of the House, and was called to order by B. C. Walker, of our Comity, on whose motion Joseph Henderson, Esq., of Wash 'ingtdn, Was chosen as temporary Chairman, and Alex. K...M'Clure, of Franklin County, and Dr. Cathcart appointed Secretaries. On account of the absence of many delegates expected by the next train the Convention took a recess until 2 o'clock, P. M. At 2 o'clock about sixty delegates were present and on calling over the counties!, two aets of dele gates appeared and claimed seats from Dauphin, and also two nets from Mifflin. , The conflicting claim, were referred to a com mittee of five, composed of Edward Ciampi:ol,ot your county, Edward Riggs, of Washington, K. M'Clure, of Franklin, E. C. Darlington, of Lancaster, and White, of Cambria. The committee made short work of the job sniped to them, and very soon reportei in fa vor of John Wright, of Mifflin, whose seat wan contested by a Mr. Hoover, a very clever like gentleman, but who, either having more honesty or more independence than most of his party, frankly declared that' he belonged to another party, of course the modest K. N. The committee also reported in favor of Mr. Bomberger and Graydon, of Dauphin, although a polite gentleman whose name I have Torgotten, seemed anxious to occupy their seat as the repro mutative of a little faction in the comity made up of some eight or ten Know Nothings, the mass of that party not being engaged in the dirty work. But the committee thought the gentle man could be profitably employed in riding two horses (political ones) and therefore excused him from sitting in two sesta. °The Convention adopted the report of the committee in both cases and thus declined the patriotic services of the friendly midnighters. Quite &number of K. N. delegates were in at tendence from Westmoreland, Philadelphia, &c., but as no one appeared to contest theireests, and as the old line Whigs were in a large majority, these gentlemen were suffered to retain' their places, especially as the day was very hot, and. there wee a refreshing coolness in the operation which considerably diminished the consumption of ice water. . But during the afternoon the demand for ice increased, as many of these amiable gentlemen fiodlog their.position understood, and their oc cupation gone, quietly milked out of the Con vention and packed traps for home. A Western bogus Whig in his hurry to Oct out of an unprofitable job, brought forcibly to mind the fancy entice of one of his Eastern confreres who left your Republican Convention last weak in such hot haste, when be found that hisfrlend poor Peter Martin ...isn't good looking and couldn't come in." Did It seer occur to you that a Pod mans: ger of Railroads and county, pollticlaes is not necessarily a good manager of every thing else, which his sanity may lead him to under take? I suspect that the two recent Whims to man age Pittsburgh Repubßeans and Harriibneg Whigs will set some gentlemen to serstohing for more mylesty. But I will lease the delegates and go on with , the Con vention. A committee of oue from each county represented, were appointed io report permanent officers for the Convention, and ress, lotions for consideration. On this committee were White, of Cambria. Cochran, of York. Mat tern, of Huntingdon, Campbell, of Allegheny,. Ellroaker, of Lancaster. Sill, of Erie, Chu:ice.: loin, of Beaver, Freeman, of Philadelphia, Williams, of Blair, and' a large number of °them whose names I have forgotten. The committee, through Mr. Chamberlain, reported for Preeident, Thomas Cochran, of York. Secretaries-4. O. Bomberger, Dauphin; R. C. Walker, Allegheny; and Dr. Cathcart. of Cumberland, with a large number of Vice Presi dents, all of whom were unanimously elected. Mr. Chamberlain then reported 'w number of resolutions, embracing, among ethers not recol lected, the following principles : • Hostility to proscription on Recount of religion' or birth place. The necessity of well-guarded Naturalisation lawn, in order to prevent foreign pauperism and crime from usurping rights and privileges which should be freely offered to men of all o imes who prove themselves really and truly attached to American principles and Inetitutions. Denunciation of the Kansas outrages and the, COCIIIIetiOII therewith of the Pierce 'Democracy. The restoration of the Missouri Compromise line, and no more Slave States north or south of It. Essential modieostion of the Fugitive Stains Law. The sale of the Pabile Works. The ooneideration of the remtutionewm . poned no motion of Mr. Fox, of Dauphin, for the purpose of nominating a candidate for Canal.. Commissioner. Mr. Chamberlain nominated Password Wil- Ilatnion. Joseph Henderson, Archibald Robertson, of Beaver, R. J. Lemon, of Illeir, and Mowry, of Dauphin, were also nominated. Mr. Movery'a name was afterwards withdrawn, on the sugges tion of one of you. delegates that he bad been recommended by one of the managers of anoilhi institution. Peter Martin was not nominated! Mr: Henderson asked leave to withdraw his name, but the Convention would not release him. On the first ballot Mr. Williamson received eight votes, and Joseph Henderson, Esq., of Washing ton, having received a large majority of all the votes east, was, on. motion of Mr. 8111, of Erie. deelired unanimously nominated as the Whig candidate for Canal Commissioner.
