The press is-the most potent inetrumen- I futility of, a good maw; and.the more readers we I can reach between this and the election the better I trine our chances of stiecese. Pliter is - furnished at the rate of One Dollar a year toemail elnbs, and a little effort ill even election •dlstriot would secure a large sicektion, to our list In the upper wards of thii, olty, in Allegheny and lathe boroughs surround- ANg us, clubs could thus be raised without much isbor; and much good seed would thus be sown. In every district of the county there are many who sympathise with the Republican movement, Yet do not take the Gazette; and now that the pressure of hard times is removed there are but few of them who would not be glad to renew their I acquaintance with us. An unexampled, desperate and unprhielpied I effort has been made in all parts of the county to break this paper down. Oui subscribers have been hunted and haunted with all manner of fabrications, and it would seem as if the' eery father of lies had leagued with our persecutors to injure us. No falsehoood has been too mean, no device too contemptible, no trick too dishonest for the political charlatans in whose way We stand, and if ieekless !minim ingenuity could compose the ruin of: 'man fighting for . the right, we hadlong, since gone to the wall. We hays been made the object not only of-individ ual but organised -apposition. An organization boasting that it poetesses the political power of the ' county has undertaken to crush ps. ' Within its seeret_ociancils it fulminates orders against us, directing' ts adherents not to patron , Ise us on pain of being deemed unfaithful to I their'obligations, and from thende issues also . slanders . the Most:vile calciulaotti with malicious exactness to snit the prejudices of - those other whie unassailable. Time , would fail us to re count the cowardly but malevolent attacks that base been for a year steadily directed against ' us ; it is sufficient to know end to say that we hate endured a course of opposition more un relenting and more unprincipled than wag prob bly ever experienced - by any one man before. So far, we have no reason to complain of the manner in which our friends have stood by us. The warfare urged upon us is a compliment to our.independence and to the influence of our' paper; and if weak friends have been driven off, others have not been Slow to take their . place. Still, we are not insensible to a kind appreciation of our efforts; and while our list stands at as good a point as it did last year, an ' increase orit would be not only a means of giving . wider circulation to the truth, but a do rmice to us against cowardly assailants We do not .askit. however, on this score, however ac ceptable we might properly deem Rio be; but • for the sake of the great muse in which we have enlisted, and to secure its triumph, if possible, we lay before - its friends the importance of giving it a wider circulation. Heretofore it has bad other presses to co-operate with it in politi eel campuigns ; now it is alone, its former coed jutors having gone off after strange gods. Hence the necessity of enlarging the circle of readers of the only press which has maintained its position undaunted and unchanged. BACITIATSCAN CONVENTION AT DADIAAA.—The Hon. George Hanle of Allegheny has accepted the invitation to adieu the Bermbiloan meeting in Indiana, Pa. on the 10th inst.
