The fly, the ruat, , the excessive moisture or the excessive dune's, the heat or the cold, all these, and sim ilar causes, were such transparent humbugs that even the ingenuity of the monopoliata could not ihvent them; and, in the absence of anything fair, reasonable, or honest to superinduce and sustain high prices, we are now told that an em inent American merchant, living in England, has deserted that our entire surplus crop is to be absorbed in Europe. For one Ido not believe a word of it In the Hest place, Mr. Peabody had no data upon which to form such an opinion, and he is not the man to express an opinion without data. And further, if he has expressed it, after all it is but the prediction of one man, liable to bo realized or not, just as the mutations of trade or the exigencies of commerce may di rect. If there is one thing more than another which is to be deplored, and which ought to be checked, it is the speculation in human food. Speculations in stocks, in property, in the pro ducts of mechanical labor, gaz. are all unobjec tionable, but speculation in human food is a mo ral wrong in the eight of God, and should be a crime by the laws of man. Ido not speak of legitimate commercial transactions in such ar ticles, but I epesk of speculation as now under stood and carried on throughout the entire coon try. Aug. 9. "Maize AMXILICIAMIL—About the time when days were longest, the Know Nothing National Convention at Philadelphia, sacrificed the beet half of its etrength to Slavery by driving oat of its Councils all who would not endorse the re peal of the Sibsouri Compromise and wink at the Missourian outrages in Katutan. The next week, the State Council of Rhode Island met. They resolved that the Nebraska bill was wrong which no lapse of time can palliate and no plea for its continuance justify." In other Ivor,* they renounced Philadelphia and all its works. Only one Sunday had intervened, when the faithful were gathered together at Macon, in Geor gia. Indignant at this "Northern treachery," they fulminated to all whom it may concern— eepeciallyßhode Island—that allpersons who op posed the Nebraskaact "were and are unfit to be recognised as members of the American Party." As this direful proclamation came flying over the wires on the lit of July, it unex pectedly met midway a Massachusetts resolve flying the other way, announcing that in Boston no man who did not oppose the Nebraska act was fit to be • member of "the American "party" and, more over, no man could, would, or should be fit- It is presumed that the collision was fatal to both resolutions, as only fragmenti of either have sinew been found_ On the next day others of the patriotic band were easing their country in a dark corner of New Orleans. The way they did it vat by agree ing that "the Federal Government ought not to interfere with Slavery except for the protec tion of Wave property!" it was here eleo . that the discovery wan made that though wrong for when it was right enough for the Order to run a French catholic for governor and • Spanish American for hie lieutenant Scarcely had America been thus secured to Protestant Americana, when of all days in the year, on the 4th of July, the Kentucky Ameri cans upset the whole arrangement by excommu nicating the Pope, and indorsing Philadelphia in all its length, breadth and depth. Onthe same day Penneylvenia rushed to the res cue. Things were snarled, but the Pennsylvania brethren of Ignorance cut the .Gordian knot— right in two. They split into two halves—one affirming and the other denouncing the Philadel phia platform, and each to this day averring Intelf to be the largest. The Penaylvanla Council is the only one that has faithfully adopted the po sition`of the Order throughout the Union. This was on the4th. On the 10th the Indiana Council disconnected itself from the Order, and took ground against Secrecy and Slavery Exten sion. On the 16th the Illinois one followed their example. On the 18th, Maryland, moved by the pervading harmony, adopted a platform exactly the reverse. About a fortnight niter, New Jer eeo made a vain attempt to sit on both stools at once,' and met with the fate to which such am bition leads. Which of these eleven oontradictory platfoims is to save the ? /Vida are the Americans who are to "rule America ?" Are they the tour Anti•Slarery Councils, or the Sire Pro-Slavery ones, or the two that art. "half-and half?" Do the five triumph when the tour are beaten, and vies rasa, in , do the two rule the other nine? Or Is Samuel a chameleon, that can be black and white according to circumstances? Whatever hopes members of the so called American party may entertain of success within their respective States, it is evident from the events of the past two months that as a Nation al organization It hai ceased to exist A Na tional Convention would be a pitched battle, and a National platform or ticket an impossibility. During Monday the most excited and exag gerated reports were constantly in circulation, and to the effects they produced is to be at tributed, in a great measure, the diffictilty in ascertaining the origin of the difficulties. A crowd Omen and half-grown boys, who were ripe for mischief, would, 'to increase thei ex citement and give them an excuse for carrying out their wishes, report that a certain house in a certain locality, was filled with Germans - and Irish having weapons. Instantly the gang Would repair .thither, probably find • foreigner in the streets, to whom they would give chase or knock' aown and then throw rooks at the house; The terrified inmates would probably rep iy by a discharge - of - weapons they chanced to har , -, and in some Instances, random idiots happened to hit innocent persons who Were pasibtby. This was then considered by the mobocrat! sufficient provoeition to tear down or burn down house after house, and maim and murder their inmates. It was such reports that originated most of the outrages, and that almost caused the destruction of the Cathedral and the Catholic church on upper Green street =LowiroiTWs Courier.
