readers are aware of the election of Prof. Me.
%own, of Cooperstown, N. Y.; to the Principal
ship of the High School of this city. We have
no doubt he is eminently gratified to perform the
arduous and responsible duties which will de
volve upon him in so important a position. From
the following paragraph, which we clip from the
Cooperstown Journal of Friday last, it will be
observed that there have been several efforts
made to secure his services as Principal.
"Prof. MoKown, who has just closed his la
horses Principal of Cooperstown semina r y, h as
nlready been elected Principal of the High School
of Pittsburgh Pa., has been tendered the Presi
dency:of Mansfield Female College, Ohio and has
been solicited.to take the Principalship of Warn
errille Seminary. 25 miles from this place, at a
salary corresponding with that which he received
when he first took charge of Cooperstown Sem
inary. He will probably accept the first men
tioned position, where the duties are not one
fourth what they have been here, and where the
salary. is $2,000 per annum. It is a day school
for boys, under the control of the city Board of
Education."
"We congratulate Prof. lifoKown on the ready
appreciation of his abilities as presiding offioer
of an institution of learning."
We perceive by the same paper that • testi
monial regard in the shape of silver plate—con
sisting of cake basket, a set of knives, ho.—was
presented to Prof. kit:Sown and his estimable
lady, by . eeholars of the Cooperstown Seminary,
at the -sociable held in the Institution on Satur
day evening. The presentation was made by
one of the young ladies in • a neat address—to
which Prof. MoKown replied in appropriate and
feeling terms.
Cass or Masts-a-Poro.—Last Friday, as the
Express train of the Ohio and Penna. Railroad
was approaching Allegheny city, • soldier, one
of a company at rout, for the Carlisle Barracks,
jumped from a car, the train going at high
speed. On Saturday the soldier came to the
city and gave himself up to the recruiting office,
at the Station on Perm 'street. The officers
dlsoovered that be was laboring under Olinda-0-
pills and confined him in • room in the second
ste_xy of their building. In the night he jumped
from: the window to the ground, without doing
himself much injury. They took him to his
room again, and on Sunday night, about two
o'clock, be aroused the whole neighborhood by
cries of "murder:" Ho was pacified anal' now
recovering.
ACOIDIJT AT BRIXTON'S STA/108.—AR a train
on the Penneylvsnia Railroad was approaching
Brinton's Station, on Monday morning, the en
gineer discovered a horse on the track, and gave
the signal to ,brake. It seems that the whistle
frightened a hone attached to s baggy, so that
the animal became unmanageable, and ran off
at a rapid gait, throwing oat the gentleman who
was driving, breaking one of his legs, and other
wise severely injuring him. The borne continued
to run, and in its course passed over a little
girl, who was also badly hurt The buggy was
strewn along the road in fragments. The jittle
girl was a daughter of Samuel Elder.--47nica.
