MONDAY MOMING,'IIILY 2, . 18 5 5 DETAILS OF THE NETS BY TUE BA FE Tar. xtEcgsr succrasza MITORMI , araeszoPoLc In order to form a correct notion of that ope ration of the allies on the 7th of June, against the Russian works at Sebastopol, it is desirable to refer to the description of these works. Every one is aware that the ground before Se bastopol Is intersected by ravines. descending to the sea, these ravines being divided front each otherhy ridges, upon which both the Reagan workload the principal batteries of the besieg• lug armies are erected. The ravine farthest to the northeast, and on the extreme right of the allied position, in front of what is now called the Inkermann attack, is that descending to the careening harbor. It was at one time intended by the allies to take possession of the whole of the northridge down •to the careening harbor, but the Runtime crossed the ravines with great determination, and eetabliehed-tio worries on the slope of it—bne at - 800 yarde, and the other at 400 yards from the second parallel.. Thule ra. doubts have probably ere this fallen into the hands of the allies, for Peliesier's deepetch of June 9th, say, "the: enemy have completely abandonedthe right shore of the Careenini bay. This is an important position, Commanding the ships in pert, and almost intercepting the en- trance to the town. ,The vest ridge is that on which the Malakoff tower Stands; and opposite to it, rte distance of about a tone and a WI, the Victoria redoubt has been erected by the al lies. The Victoria attack carried on lir the Frenckle directed from this point againel the tower and adjoining works. Descending nearet to the toweri - and about Ave hundred yards in front of it; is the Mamelon, which is described as commanding the tower itself. The conquest and occupation of this hill by the french is the result of the contest of Jute 7. The Malakoff tower itself, being due of the few works 'in ma sonry on the .land side of Sebastopol, watt long since reduced to ruins, but it is now enclosed by a very high semi-circular parapet of earth, pierced with twelve embrasures and surrounded by a ditch. From the tower to the Careening bay there rune a long line of parapet, broken at half way by a battery of sixteen guns, on two fares; arid thattflanking the curtain between this point and the tower. Another battery of twelve guns on the hill above Careening bay it connect ed with this work by a farther parapet, , which extends to the sea. We,apprehend that the works taken on the 7th ist. , dttne are outside this line. The hedan is separated from 'the y Mala koff tower by, what is termed the middle ravine, and stands upon the ridge: between the Worm miff ravine and this middle ravine. On this ridge also Stands the allletiCrovni hatteryi, front ing the apex of the Baden which wan farther defended by an annuls , an d by a strong party of riflemen lodged insratorte quarry in front of the work, and which quarry was carried by the Brit ish on the 7th of June. Sebastopol, it Is to be remembered, is not a fortress, but a town, de fended by a chain of forts and field fortifiiationa. From the description - it will be noticed that the several attacks of the besieging armies are ad vancing pan pasta on parallel lines, and that the recent operations of the allies, although distinct, assist each other, and are essential to the coc oas of the coalmen enterprise, the plan of the alliait44.4 to enclose the Ilussien line of 'forti fication-a within another line, which shall grade ally advance until the besieged are &Wen into the seal We now proceed to give the official mounts of these opereaksmst. , - Gen. Pelissife first despatches are quite dra matic. Rea 6-10 p. m.—To-day, with our allies, we opened fire against the external works, and to-morrow, please God, we will take them! Joan Ip. m.—At half past six our sig nals for assault were given; and ore hour after wards oar eagles floated over the Ilomelon Vert and over the two redoubts of Careening "Bay. 'The artillery of the enemy fell into oar hands. We have taken 400 prisoners. Oar legions oc-, copy the conquered works. On their ide, our Sillies, with their usual resolution, airried the works in.the quarries, and established them. beim there. All the troops showed the meet ad mirable devotion and intrepidity. Jess B.—Last evening we took ,posus=',2o of sixty two guns in the captured redaliSt7 Thir teen dicers were made primates. Our loss, which has not been accurately ascertained, is considerable, so might have been expected from itbgreat a result. Jess o.—The situation is the same as yester day. All the demonstration" of the enemy agaillok the captured works have bees fruitless. They .ave abandoned the sorealledhatiery of the 2d of May; they have also completely abandon ed to us the right shore of Careening bay. The vessels in part have sought refuge ink Artillery bay, where our large mortars can reach them. We are watching them attentively. Lord Bagian's despatch we have already re- I eeived via Halifax, as follows Before Sebastopol, Jane-7.—The formidable fire of yesterday was kept up to-day; with the greatest I spirit. and soon after six o'clock this evening the French attacked and carried the White Wort and the Mamelon. The whole ope ration was most tailllant. Great gallantry was . displayed on elf sides. emulsifies not yet known. The next despatch was the following Julia B.—The= success of lest night was very complete, and the gualatry sad steadiness of the troops cannot be too highly spoken of.
