Florida, Georgia, and other States were called upon and speeches given by delegates represent ing them. The North would not respond. Despatches to the Baltimore American say that much confu sion and disorder prevailed, and the speakers were several times interrupted. The chair had mach difficulty in preserving order...* There ii .a wide and deep gulf between the sieve and. free States, on political questions. The only Way to smite the two replicas is by bridg ing the abyss. This has been tried frequently by National conventions, but the structures have proeedto be such-rickety concerns that they have invariably toppled down on the first mart breese. The last Congress, in conjunction with he pres ent administration, so widened the gulfs, that the political engineers have not been able to . disviee any bridge which will reach across with any chances of standing for a moment. The Know- Nothing engineers at Philadelphia are laboring to invent something new by which to cross the gulf to the Presidency, but they will fail, as the gulf is absolutely impassable. The Native American State Convention met at Harrisburgh on Thureday. Only 39 delegates were in attendance, representing butt& counties; showing that it wan but a repetition of the old Native Conventions, to which we had become as accustomed as toany other periodical visita tion. irmiber Cleaver was nominated for Ca. nal Commisioner, and the following platform adopted: Weiner—We, the delegates of the American party of Pennsylvania, in Convention met at liar. risborgh, in obedience to the call of the state Ex ecutivii Committee, do hereby declare our per petual determination to be the protection of the Constitution of the "United States as our politic al principles and .the laws of the name, for our governments. Doughfac s eism could hardly go An attempt bas been made to create the iro -pression that this convention would be the means used to change the Know Nothings from a secret M en open party, and that that Order would avail itself of the opportunity thus offered to abandon its oaths and secret mummeries. But the fact that the Convention was attended by, very few Knott-Nothings shows that there 13 no present intention to give up the midnight 'skulking of which use has so freely been made hitherto. We notice in-the list of delegates of the con vention two or three nukes of men who are at tempting to preserve e membership in some one of the old parties, who are also known to be ac tive Know Nothings, and who add to their polit ical labors the duties of managing the Native American party. We fear . they are overloaded in thus - bearing the burden of membership in three parties et once. On the afternoon of the 31st the wind was from the eastward, and there was a fair prospect of a continuance of wet weather for mime days to come. Never was rain more needed, for not a shower sufficient to lay the dust had fallen since the fifth of April, a period of eight weeks. In Mayor Conrad's speech at the Know Noth ing banquet in Philadelphia he alluded to the higher law of hospitality, and immediately added —"would that di higher laws were as harm less"! The purpose of this ill-natured fling is apparent; and when it is remembered that the "higher law" at which he sneers, and which he charitably wishes was "harmless" is the law of the Great Creator, it will readily be concluded that this babbling Mayor is more talkative than pious. :The democrata of Greene county have nomina ted Rufus E. Campbell for Assembly, Elijah Adams for Bheitlf, Jaccib Lemley for Treasurer, die. 8. Bayard for Commissioner; Michael Mc- Clelland for Auditor, and A. A. Furman for District Attordey. The nomination for Arsenat bly ie, we think, a decided improvement upot the one modelast year. A Kansas correspondent of the Ohio State Journal, writing from Leavenworth city, eve: !The new election went off on llie 22d of thin month:. I attended on purpose to nee if the Judges would allow non-residenta to vote.= Three-fourths of the voters crossed the river from the Ilissouri side. They took possession of the polls with knife and pistol in hand, and swore they would kill any man who had a white ticket —the color of the free State tickets. There were 700 voted polled, 100 of which were free State tickets. But Ido not know how eo many anti slavery men got their votes in. Had I been a legal voter I would not have dared to have ap proached the polls with a white ticket. One young man made hie way thropgh the crowd, and voted a white ticket, and, while the infuria ted mob consulted what they should do with the crimisusl, be mounted hie horse and galloped off at full speed. followed by the curses of the demons. I could relate lirmdreds of instances where men have been maltreated for voting for the free State candidates. But 1 have already given oaf hcient to show you the dials of public feeling on the subject of slavery. Kansas is doomed to slavery. The institution in here now. They are bought and sold. They run away, and are apprehended and brought beck. If they resist they are shot down. This ungodly traffic flourishes the same as in a slave State." A Doxi..LOn Monday, of lest week, eome of the fast young men of New York left that city for Canada, for the purpose of fighting a duet— The provocation wan of a frivolous character.— One said to the other that he wae not rightfully a member of the Shakespeare Club, which both frequented: The lie was given, a pat in the face followed, and;the parties resorted, in accor dance with the laws of honor, to the trial of the duel,: to cleanse thar tarnished honor in each other's blood. The Tribune gives the fol lowing description of the affair, The party consisting of Messrs. F. Leaven worth and J. B. Breckenridge principals, and J. IL Pendleton and Mr. Middleton secoods, with Dr. Alfred Grimes surgeon, left here on Monday afternoon. in different cars of the earns train of the.Mudsou River Railroad for Niagara Falls.— It was supposed by their friends hers that they would travel all night and reach Canada in mea lier' to fight-at en early hour the next murning. Whether they did not pursue their journey with the expected rapidity, or whether after their ar rival at the F.P.x further negotiations were [Mind to he necessary, 'are points on which we have not, been able to obtain particular information. -Enough that the duel did not take place until Thursday morning. The locality selected was a secluded spot in the vicinity of the Falls on the Canada side of the river. So cautiously had the preparations lieen made that the population around had no intimation of what wee going for ward.. The distance at , which it had been deter mined.that the parties should fight was only eight paces, indicating a feeling of mortal hostility be tween thew. The weapons were 'pistols, and all the preliminaries being settled, the men were placed. Both fired promptly at the word,„.and both were bit. Each combatant aimed down ward, which is not antuctisual thing in such caste among experienced duelist'. Mr. Leavenworth was atruck in the right thigh, which the bullet pierced, and, as a surgical examination after ward proved, lodged in the hone of the left thigh, inflicting a very severe though probably not a mortal wound. Mr. Breckenridge was shot through the calf of the right leg, the ball pars ing clean out, without seriously injuring any blood-vessel or important muscle. kaLeavenworth:instantly foll,:and Breckenridge having ascertained that his adversary was not killed, at once left the field, regained the Ameri can shore, and took the first train to New York, and by traveling all night arrived here yesterday morning. lie did not however deem it prudent to remain in New York, but sconce left for other parts, where he will not be exposed to the vigor of our laws. Mr. liaivenworth was found to be 90 greatly injured that itwas impossible to remove him any distance. lie was conveyed to the nearest con venient house, where he still remains. His sec ond, Mr... Pendleton, is with him as is Dr. Grimes —both of whom, as we are informed, have done orerythlng possible to relieve his sufferings. We learn also that Mr. Leavenworth, the father, who was understood to have approved of his sores fighting this duel, left yesterday for Niaga ra, accompuniectby Dr. 'Cbetworth of Elizabeth town, the family physician. So far as we are aware the general optician of those acquainted with the present state of the 'wounded man is that he will. eventually recover, though he can hardly escape being lame for life. Still the (cue la a critical one, there being danger that morti fication may atipervene. It in proper to add - that we were misinformed in stating Mr. Breckenridge to be the son of the distinguished member, of that name of the last Congress.
