Report accepted. , Enquiry was made as to the whereabouts of the Chairman of the committee en Discipline, and what are hie ecclesiastical relations. Rev. D. Scott replied that he is supposed to be in the city of Hamilton, Canada, kind it is not known whether he is In connactitits with any other body. • 4, The reading of the testimony in - the Casll. of reference'from the Philadelphia Presbytery_Yas taken up and finished. This was-the case of the Mrs. Eccles; charged with adultery.:' Mrs. Eccles is a resident of Philadelphia, and I's a timber of the first congregation of thatcity, The charge was first referred to the Presbytery, and by the Presbytery to the Synod now in Bestial. The libel was again read, when Rev. J. Chrys tie moved that the first count of the libel be not Imatained—he tevidenco being almost entirely circtunstalatial. The only direct evidence is that of a man 3000 miles off, and he by his own show ing, a man dishonorable and loathsome. Mr. ,Ckryatie made - it brief but forcible argument a gainst the admission of circumstantial evidenoe. The divine law he said, is most singularly ex plicit—at the mouth of two or three witnesses shall he bo put to death?" 2nd Deut.l7: vi. As regards Mrs. E committing the prime of odultrey, there is not ‘ a Ithodourof evidence—there is more of infirmity than wickedness iso her con duct. Rev. Wm. Sloane heartily coincided with the father's remarks. Rev. T. Sproul disagreed. Tho character of the witness who testifies positively to the fact, should not affect hie testimony. lie argued in favor of circumstantial evidence. Rev. T. Hannah said there was a law in the Old Testament respecting jealousy which differs greatly from the law requiring two witnesses.— Even Julius Cauar, a heathen, said hie wife shoutd not only be pure but above suspicion.— He wished insect) to be done to the man. Rev. Mr. Scott said he had married the par ties. 'Ha had known Mrs. E— before mar riage, and would testify in the most explicit and positive manner to her unexceptionable charac ter. As to circumstantial evidence, he said. God has decided what amount of evidence is neces sary in his , courts and le have right to lecide for ourselves. " Mr. Chrystie replied to the remark of Mr. Sproul, that the circumstances lead directly to one conclusion. This might be so if we could follow the line of God's Providence as we can a surveyor's chain, but lamentable experience proves that we cannot As to jealousy,' it must be remembered that it becomes green-eyed and makes suspicion strong as holy writ. The allusion to Julius Censer, he thought, was nnfor -1 Waste. Such was the character of that monster that his name ought not to be mentioned in a Court of Christ_ Rev. D. Scott thought there should be a full expression of the mind of Synod on this subject. The only direct evidence we have is from one steeped In the filth of his own criminality. On such testimony be would not hang a dog—no, not even whip him. ' Rev. 3. Lore said the witness referred to was in the lowest depths of human depravity. He related an instance similar to the present one, wletere a vile debenchee who had laid snares for a beautiful and most chaste woman; yet while she bad a strong predilection for him, she re mained virtuous. So, - he thought it was in this There was we akness but purity. After some remarks, a vote was taken wheth er the charges in the first count had been proved. Decided in the negative. The second count was sustained and referred back to the session of the First Church, Phila delphia. - Complaint read, of .1. S. T. Milligan against Illinois Presbytery—some proceedings of which be alleged_to affect his character. Laid one table. Rev. Mr. McDonald desired to know if J.S. T. Milligan had presented a libel against him. He had circulated over the church his intention of doing so on the ground of false testimony and slander, and he hoped he would not now back out. Synod decided that when it adjourns finally it will adjourn to meet in the Cherry et. Church, Philadelphia, on the 4th Tuesday of May, 1856, at 7} P. M. • Synod adjourned till Monday. A &mouse Amts.—A sort' f an affair dhoti neur came off on Saturday evening. The circum stances—at least all that have transpired, for there is some mystery in the asse—craze follows: Two gentlemen—Jeremiah' 3lcKibben and Isaac Craig—were seen standing in front of the drug store of T. H. Nevin tr. Co., Liberty street, about five o'clock, Saturday evening. Craig Imnded a letter to McKibben, who read it and immediately produced a revolve; held it to Craies breast and pulled the trigger twice, the cap snapping each time but no explosion follnw leg. Craig then took to his heels; ran over to Market street and down. Market a step or two to the store of C. Knox. He ran through the store back to Liberty street. McKibben had stopped at the corner and just as Craig emerged from t o store, he fired his pistol, the cap this time taking effect. The ball, however, went whizzing : down Liberty street sod Craig unin jured took to his heels again. McKibben gave chase, but Craig disappeared in a ho'use on Ceti& Alley. McKibben wentto Allegheny. The officers were out after him on Saturday night but had not succeeded in arresting him.— The parties are brothers in-law, but the cause of the difficulty is unknown to any except them selves.
