A vast collection of .books I to exist In the palace of Samareand. It is Well known that Tamerlane, in giving orders for the devastation of the countries ho conquered, commanded that the books and manuscripts of the Armenians, Georgians, Syrians, and other people subjugated by his arms, should be brought to Bamorcand, and deposited in some stronghold, prohibiting, at the same time, under the severest penalties, any volume to be takeu out of its walls. Tim injunctions of the savage conqueror were rigidly obeyed. This collection of Samarcand has thus only been known by tradition down to within late period I t' but there was no proof that the books of which it consisted had not been destroy ad or carried off by the keepers themselves. A few years tines, an intrepid traveler desirous of satisfying himself with his own eyes, as to the actual existence of this great:bibliographical I treasury, visited Samarcand, and succeeded in gaining admittance to the interior of the fortress; what he sow there, we shall leave the narrator of this curlew journey to relate. The extracts are from the notes of a work entitled, ..BOttieVt; -meni national de r Armenie ehretienne au Vise..= -1 Steele contra la lot de Zoroastre, sow reposition& 11 mast du prince Varian Gs Naroijmonien ; par Piisee Vartdbed, eentemporion, traduit at Francais par, r adse Gregoire Kabaragy Garabed der Academic, '. Armenia= ire Venire. Paris, 1854, in 800. The following passages we take from the 878th and'l ensuing pages. "Mr. Khatcadour Hovanisien an Armenian, born et Ispatuun, thoroughly versed in his own national tongue, as well as that of the Arabs, Persians, Syrians, and Afghans, in bl frequent travels among those people, had so perfectly fa miliarised himself wtth their manners and toe tam; their literature, gestures, carriage, man. nor of carrying the head, of saluting, and with the movement of their eyes, handy, and mouth that it was impossible for the most fanatical' scrutiny to recognise him as a chnstian. Some, eight years ago; Mr. lihsteadour vent to Cant- ' ta. and entered into the service of the East In dia Company. He subsequently undertook a journey across Afghanistan, and penetrated to' the country of Samarcand. He does not inform us as to the objects of this perilous journey; but he was no doubt charged by the company with the mission of exploring in detail these inhospi table countries, which are totally inlocessible to the dranger. "Mr. Alustoadour equipped himself in the white costume of the Sheiks ; he hung ninety nine amuleteof three and six angles around his, neck, and precious . msgio stones on his breast, and put on hts finger rings, covered with cabal istic characters ; he then set out on his jouraey; traversing the towns and hamlets with a grave and measured atop, notforgettiog to pay Isis hom age to the tombs of persons celebrated for their sanctity, while addressing his prayers to Mehem et and the lawn Ali, and reciting passages froiii the Horan., He thus wonderfully accomplished Ina secret mission. At the end of a year, he ar rived at &mamma.. There, as the Sheiks read ily gave him the most honorable reoommendn dons, he was favorably received by the learned men and ministers. "But he had yet to fulfill the mission which he had imposed on himself ; he wished to see the immense depot oft cots and manuscripts which Tamerlane had gathered fromall quarters lialearned that they were piled up in the fortress and were guarded with the greatest vigilance, no one being permitted to visit them without the permission of the ministers, which was very dif ficult to obtain. It was even said that they who had entered the closed precincts had died there, or become mad. Disregarding all these follies, he made application to the ministers, who en deavored to dissuade him from his purpose.— "Strange sbunds," they said to him, "are heard in this mysterious place, and violent contests be tween the angels and the fiends ; the first guard the holy books, and the litter those of the infi dels. The latter are great in number, and will certainly strangle you." Mr. Ithatcadour re , plied that he could defy the power of all the de mons, with the marvellous amulets he had. brought from Mecca. "Be finally obtained the desired permission. Accompanied by some of the subordinates of the ministers, and bearing an order addressed to the guardians of the fortress, Mr :11hatcadour directed his 'steps to that formidable structure. After having sacended and descended numerous rough end almost' impassible paths and after a thousand torus, traversing immense halls, peo pled by enormous bats, whose sharp cries sounded to his superstitious corattanioas as the cries of demons, our adventurous traveller reached tho vault which contained the books, and the gate of which was scoured by ponderous bolter and locks. There, he prostrated. himself on his face and knees, and recited the aware. The praises presented Min the keys, saying at the same time, "if God hp on your side, you will be able to open and enter; we all retire, bupt in =hour, we will come to seek you deader lave." "Mr. Bliateldora dexterously overcame all difficulties, and without much lose. of time, he opened the door, which was =Aiwa enormous, pieces of massive oak. With great difficulty hp succeeded in keeping it sufficiently ajar to pans through; he enters at last. What a epectaele I Thcarands of bats of various sizes, atoll at random on each.. other, or lying acatterea about in the dust, sombre vault, lighted only by a couple of small' avert:nee, To examine these treasures, years were necessary, and he was al lowed but an hour I He took hold of a huge boo*, more than a foot thick, six feet long and four broad; in opening it, the cover,. which was ' composed of .nothing else than rotten boards, broke to pieces in his hands. Beneath it were greet leaves of parchment, covered with Greek characters: its title, written in the Armenian di alect was the following: "History of the Ancient' Heroes of all Nations, bg the //i,oh Priests of the' Temple of Diana and Nam" 51r. Elatadour turned over several leaves, and everywhere he's found the same characters; he wished next to examine the books, lying beneath - the first one I hejle red Opened, but It was so heavy that he was I obliged to nounce the effort. He turned another side and inspected to' pected the first book within his reach; it was a Syriac work of history, with out a title in the Armenian dialect; be picked I up another, which be found to be a Georgian manascript Near this he discovered Elysee, the anther of the history, a emulation of which we offer;to the publics. The next book he opened was a large Bible in Armenian, another was a poetical composition in Aratdo verses. He then opened two or three Greek books, whose authors were unknown to liat ' and another being the woe of Origen. But he had hardly glanced at semesters:sty ar.d..odd volumes, .mere atoms in i this list deposit:4j'. of knowledge, when he heard his friends calling. on him from the outside. To his great regret he was, obliged to Ant the book Which he was Inspecting, and be rushed out of the vault exadming "Water I bring me quickly I some Water to wash myself, for I have touched 1 the books of the infidels! "The angels must have un doubtedly carried it to Paradise," said he to his fanatical hearers, who ventured not to express I doubt to ihe contrary. This is 225 feet abovethe Stream. Those who have stood upon the Bridge, and watched the current below, will remember how rapidly, and with what seemingly irresistible force the cast volume of water rushee-thunder ingly along, to the narrow gorge beyond. Yet its surface at this point is unbroken. Mr. Roebling attached a strong wire 960 feet long, to a plummet-shaped piece of smooth wrought iron, prepared for the purpose, and which weighed 42 pounds, and suspended it from the Bridge 50 feet above the water. It was let. go, end with it simultaneowily liteentire slack of the wire. The sounding lron s e truck point downwards--there was a i white streak-of-light; tang-like sigzag of foam upon the water—the wire almost instantly jerked against, the rail of the Bridge, and stood out taught at an angle of say 70 degrees. Rfinningi it down with the eye,' there was discovered staid the commencing breakers below, the great Ironplummet dancing and skipping about on the top of the water like a playful trout. Soon the wire slacked, end par tially sank, The 42 pound attachment at the end traitjesked loose; and-with Poole enduatater one other worthies, was a 'goner.' The wire was of the very beet quality, and of the size and strength seemingly of that used in winding the great cables of the Bridge. Mr. Roebling will again try to sound the river, and ia ,coatident that he will succeed. There is a vague rimer down there that an English Navy Officer, two years since," spent three days upon the old bridge heaving the lead into the mighty waters, and that be actually brought up sound ings from a depth of 160 feet. He used * hemp lice. From the vastly impatient manlier in which we saw the Water-God Cast off the re. strainta of a thin wire, we are satisfied thatthat liad-line, and those soundings aremyths.
