Mr: Miller, who was a candidate -before the Whig primary meetings, and defeat ed, offered himself as an independent candidate for the same offiee, on the ground that the meet ing's lied been attended and controlled by others than ahigs. Not a word was said, publicly, that we are aware of, thst either of these gentlemen - were -Know Nothings, and they were urged upon - the - people, respectively; as the Whig and inde pendent candidates. With what face, then. can the vole for these two candidstss be claimed as an indication of the Know Nothing strength, as is now pretended 1 If they were really mem bers of the Order, they did not present them selves as such, and both' struggled to get all the votes' theyconld, without reference to their own secret politic!. That they should both succeed ill obtaining: the votes of many unsuspecting men was inevitable, and the returns bear evi, dente , of the extent of their labors in this di rection. bad yet the Order coolly lays claim to every vote obtained by them as its own The vote for Wadlow and Miller combined was 826; while the vote of the known candidates of . the Order for Coto:mita and Director of the Poor ;afitoutis to but .about 550. Chandler and the Knott , Nothings—Gorernori• Merrobw—North Carolina, Michigan, This has been rather a busy and important day in Congress. The famous "Homestead Bill," which has been so long in agitation, was defeated by a large majority. :"There is no ra tianal doubt that this is the end of this long con- test, and the measure is dead beyond all hopes of resuscitation. I have kept your readers ad vised of its situation. Mr. Dawson, some days since tacked it as an amendment to Cobb's grad nation bill. After, two speeches in its behalf from himself, and 'explanatory comments from others, it was to-day rejected, ayes 72 nays 93. To this measure I W. originally opposed, as not required by the state of the country, not likely to be ultimately beneficial to that portion of the people for whose advantage it was designed, and because I regarded its tendency as dangerous and injurious in accustoming the people to look to their government rather than to themselves for help and support in the struggle of life.— More lately, when much modified in Its details, I was reconciled to it as an expedient of resist ance to the encroachments of slavery upon free territory, without any very well defined hope, however, that it would-be effectual to that end. I rather waived my objections than gave the ap proval of my judgment to its _principle, objects or details. Before the people were made fully aware of its character the Homestead Bill sprang into a musb•roo>a pojularity. It origi giludly passed the House by a nearly unanimous Tote, under the pilotage of Andrew Johnson, of Tennessee. It was smothered in the Senate.— It passed the House again last winter, by a smaller majority, and with far lees of cordial good will and enthusiasm. It was beaten in the Senate by treachery and fraud, and the sub stitution of Hunter's Land Bill. While undergo ing these vicissitudenthe project became °bans, ions to the suspicions and hostility of the Know Nothings. It was this sentiment which finally killed it, and now it is removed from the field of strife, and can no longer be enumerated among the political questions of the day. The Know Nothings finding they, had perfect control of the House, instantly proceeded to give another evidence of their power. Having lop pod off Dawson's project from Cobb's land graduation bill, they defeated the latter measure by the votet - of 98 to 94. Pretending to limit and restrict the graduation and reduction bill of the last session, it really extended that system, and provided for the alienation of vast addition al quantities of land at merely nominal prices.— Its defeat was an excellent and most necessary result. Sam has been around alt day, and nev er before seemed so confident of his strength, or in better humor with himself. .11r. Chandler sat in his seat through three Mortal hours, charged to the muzzle with a speech in defence of the Homiah Church, and against the Know Nothings, and protected with huge literary ramparts which might have con tained all the knowledge and a modicum of the superstition of the Vatican. His day will come to-morrow. A condensed abstract of the Governors' Piles sages of the several States would make a chap ter of very interesting reading. Gov. Bing a most appropriate name, judging from the tone of his inaugural—teems most bellicose. He concludes a catalogue of grievances, the sum of which is that the North is opposed to the inva sion of her free territory by slavery, with the following careful intimation: "The day may come, perhaps it will be too late, when our Northern brethren will discover that the South ern States intend to be "equals in the Union, or independent out of it" Appalling suggestion ! The "Northern breth ren" of the amiable Governor may learn - when too late to. avert their indescribable disaster, that the South will secede, and establish her in dependence out of the Union, unless allowed full swing for her unlimited insolence in it. Well, if Bragg means to threaten, why does be not say at once that North Carolina remains in the Un ion only for the protection and advantage of the North, and that if further provoked she will withdraw and leave 1113 to perish. This ia a sort of language which his dearly beloved Northern brethren, the 'whole Doughface fraternity who follow Casa, Buchanan and the Castle Garden Union Committee, would understand and appre ciate, and which, now as at any time before, would bring them at once to their marrowbones. Bat the great mass of the Northern people, and never so generally as now, tear it with indig nant contempt and reply with acorn and defi ance to North Carolina and all her slarebreeding sisterhood, go out of the Union if ion dare, and when you please, and we will be rid of a Con nection which has never benefitted us, and which brings with it only contempt and degradation. I Observe that North Carolina is taking the lead in this silly gasconade about dissolving the Union as a punishment of the North for her sen timents and acts upon slavery. A few weeks since the legislature adopted a string of treason able and trumpery resolutions threatening adis solution on any one of half a dozen contingencies, all of which are certain to happen if the North ever• obtains her due ascendancy in the national councils. With characteristic promptitude this rigmarole of folly and infamy was copied into Cass' home organ, the Detroit Fro Prete and thence into the Washington Union, not with scarifying denunciations of the traitors who is sued this diatribe of legislative presumption and rualienity, bat with solemn ,warnings to the North to put down her abolitionists as the only means of arresting the doom which must cer taizalg befall the free States =leas the wrath of North Carolina were appeased. But the misers ble;delosion which gave, such creatures at the North influence and power is passing sway, and NOrth Carolina may brag and bluster until hoarse and blind with her own passion without exciting any other feeling than derision north of the Potomac. Contemporaneously with this simoom from the South comes the message of Gov. Bingham, of Michigan, In which he recommends the passage of laws establishing exactly that policy which being adopted, or the half,.quarter, or tenth part of it being adopted, North Carolina avows she stands ready to shiver.the Union into Mourners ble.fragments.. It only requires the-union of the North to carry into effect the Bingham plat form, and then farewell North Carolina, with her Bragg, her nigger's, her slave trade, her auc tions of men, women amtchildren. five-thee4ell, and If Ibmrsr, Lbw danrer fetrtLwrelL The Governors of Massachusetts, New York, indeed of most of the Northern States have dis solved the Union in the same way, namely by netting at defiance Southern treason, Southern bluster, and doughface sympathy with both. So of course the days of the Union are numbered, and we shall soon be called upon to form other connections more Sanorable, and more in ac cordance with our tastes, principles and in stincts. Thanks to Bragg, to Casa, to Brodhead, and more and most of all to Douglas and Ne braska. . JIMUL A gentleman 'living in Brussels, somewhat troubled by cobwebs and spots in his eyes, rubbed them one night with a few drops of ex tract of belladona. In the manliee the cobwebs had gone, but the whole outer face of the world had changed. His newspaper, which had been placed by his bedside, was composed of type so mall that ho could hardly decipher it He rang the bell, and his stout serving wench%ad shrunk into a thin little girl of tin years. He got up in great fright and lookedlafter his clothes—they were the generate of a child ; but as his own limbs had diminished in proportion, he easily got Into them. He found his wife and children at the table, the former a dwarf, the latter a row of dolls. He hurried off to his physician;— the horses he met looked like dogs, and to doge like" rate. Everything was Lilliput and Cinder ells. Lotions were applied to the victim's eyes, and the next day Brolxlignsg returned; bringing back the cobwebs and the spots. This phenome non, called mlcropie, don not seem to have oc curred more than half a dozen times, though it maybe brought on by the employment of cer tain substances at will. George V. Bacon. Vialliam Bigler Bradford Scattering 33 James Pollock was declared to be drily elected Governor of the State, and the certificate of hie election was signed by the Speakers of both Houses, and being read by the Clerk, the Con vention adjourned. The teller then reported the result of the joint meeting to the House, when a motion to adjourn prevailed. Yesterday afternoon, a very important arrest on a charge of forgery, was effected in Well et., by Gilbert F. !loves, of the Bank Police.— Quite recently some - of the money broken com menced buying the old Texan certificates. Of late there has been put into circulation in Balti more, Philadelphia, and New York, a quantity of spurious certificates with the forged signatures of the auditors and OffiCel, of the Government, so handsomely executed that several brokers have been victimised in Southern cities. The accused came to the exchange office of Mr. James, in Wall at, and offered for sale a pack age of these certificates; hut Mr. James, suspect ing something wrong, left the party until ho could ascertain their par value. Upon the return of - the Broker, the holder of the certificates was missing. Meanwhile Gen. Ward, United States Consul at Panama, accompained by several Tex an gentlemen, happened to visit the office of Mr. James, and while they were scrutinising the cer tificates the applicant came back to close his bargain. The aggregate amount of those he of f Tared to sell was about $B,OOO, for which he agreed to take $1,300, and would have been paid this amount by Mr. James, had not the Consul and his friends pronounced them a gross forgery. When accused, the prisoner declared that he met a man in Broadway, who boarded at the Metro politan Hotel, and desired him to negotiate the certificates and meet him at the hotel in the evening. The prisoner was brought before the Magis trate at the Big of Justice, but he refuseeto give his name or say anything concerning his place of residence or business. He had previous ly given the name of C. A. Keene, and under that cognomen the Justice committed him. The affi davits of Mr. James and Gen. Ward were taken. —N. F. Time, 1101.
