December, has been received by the agents-in this city, Gilder:away & Co.. and Miner, & Co.' JOHN MITCUELL.—This individual has exhaust ed, already, the fund of popularity with which he commenced his career. The story is told in a few words; and the facts stated below, by the Nen , York TIM; announce a result ohm!, many anticipated from the beginning: We understand that John Mitchell has with drawn from The Citizen, and fr m public life.— One reason for this stee is that has eyesight has been injuriously affected by his labors; and an other is the conviction that the extent to which be has been personally identified with the paper has been - hrjuriouito its influence and prosperi• ty. Re confesses that he has been grievously disappointed in the temper of the American peo• ple,—finding them much less disposed than he -heAtad imagined, to encourage the free expres stair of opinion upon all subjects. The Citizen lost about ten thonrand subscribers in consequence of , :the proelnmation of his desire for an "Ala bama plantation well stacked with fat negroes:" -=and several thottian'ti more followed when he commenced the war - upon Archbishop Hughes.— r: Mitchell declares his intention to remain in entire obscurity for four years. PIZ ACCIDENT Os `IRE ICE !Cr ALILI.I,—We have already noticed the breaking through of the ice of the liindscin River Railroad mail sleigh at Albany, and the narrow escape of a number of passengers, on Tuesday, but the following are ad ditional particulars. Mr. Frederick Staabe, German, who was one of the passengers, says:— , •i was a passenger on the sleigh from East Albany which broke through—occupied a seat about midway frum the driver and the end. As we entered the ferry cut, the rear end of the sleigh commenced sinking; grid immediately the ice gave way, the sleigh continuing to sink. The horses also broke through the ice. I should think there were about twenty persons In the sleigh at the time. Severed passengersjumpeil out on the ice. A young man who sat near me reached the .solid ice, and I took bold-of his coat and' woo helped out. I was in the water nearly up to my neck. - When I reached the solid ice the heads of the horses were all Unit could be seen shove the water. I misted two ladies oat. One was al most entirely under water. I took bold of her clothing near her neck, and es I raised-her up she grabbed noyarm, and was thus drawn upon the ice. The second lady, then in the water, wes near the horses. I got hold of her arm and polled her out. The ice near the sleigh gunk down, and the water covered it for some distance.— While assisting tbe ladies out, I was in water tip to my knees. • 1 think all were rescued. Several men from the ferry boats c o me to our ossittatice and helped a number of passengers out of the sleigh 111/1a water." Three of theladies who were in the sleigh, at ithe time of the accident were at the Stanwia lilt% where we found Mr. Staab& Their minims are Mrs. il. Reynolds and niece, of Hudson, and Mrs: E. IV. Wilson, of New ell, The "Thieu werosatnrated with water, and very much chilled, but. being provided• with: dry clothing by, Mrs. Britton, of the Staowis, and with attentive aid, they were rapidly recovering from their fright. The whole 'party in the sleigh were in a drench ing condition. as they were pulled from the sleigh or through the water on the ice: The horses and sleigh were got out soon after the passen gers were rescued. The cruising is still kept up at the foot of StateDdreet, and at the North and South ferries, on the tee. A. fire broke out in Buffalo, on ,Wednesday, says the Democrat, which was got out before any damage was done to the building, but not until a woman had perished in the flames. It seems that Mrs. Finn had been drinking all day, and about eight o'clock went home. She lighted a candle and went into a small ante-room, it is supposed, for shavings, nod fell down among them, and wan unable to rise or give an alarm. family living in the adjoining room woo poured by the smell of smoke, and on opening the door leading to the back room, saw the-sha vings and floor on fire, and rushed in and drew out the woman, but not until she was a complete crisp. Fier lower limbs, arms and trunk were no much burned that the doctor was unable to more her for fear she would fall to pieces. Not withstanding her awful condition, the woman WO alive an hour after the accident. When etc was drawn out of the room, she ejaculated twice —"Oli toy God I Oh my God !" The police in the streets came in to know the cause of the rushing to nod fro, and in and out, and the company were seised with - fearful apprehensions of having been poisoned. They all had finally to be transported to their re spective home in carriages. Upon en investiga tion it turned out that the cook bad, by mistake, gone to the doctors closet and taken some tartar emetic, instead of cream of tartar, for her bis cuits, and had made them so very light that they would not stay upon the stomachs of any one .that ate of them.—A'.
