We noticed the principal facts in the above very satisfactory exhibit a -few days ago. The result of the- first nine , mantles shows that the prediction was founded . ou a safe and prudent calculation, and was with in theism*, as the road will earn over one mil- NOD, 1 ' A great many roads, both East and West, have engaged ,in a protracted and ruinous competi tion, until the urgent nueseity of the cessation of so destructive a policy has led to a truce and to a. convention of Railroad representatives, to consult on future action. One of these conven tions was held In Columbus, one in Chiang°, and one in New York. The rates of fare and rules- . and regulations adopted by these different-con ventions, or rather combinations, are quite dif ferent and conflictink, and come of the roles are absurdly stringent and impossible. After an era of loose regulations and low rates, the ten. deny now is to the other extreme, and the con- Sequence moat likely will be that the whole effort will be a failure. ' We are pleasedto learn that the Directors and Officers of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Road have hid the good sense to avoid all these-en tangling alliances. They have kept aloof from all these conventions; and if they continuo to. purme a like prudent policy they will avoid them bereft*. - -That road has never entered ' to the ruinous abmpetition which has injured th other roads. , It has always demanded fair, w ing rates, and the result is so satisfactory that ere is no cause fora Mange Its rules have always been more stringent, than those of its cotem pantries, and they here -Tked so well that there - Is mrsormd reason fog an alteration. It is also so situated as to belong to neither of the . congeries of roads .In l the West or in • the East, but is-the ginthl, , ,litik which united them together. It could not unite with the eastern roads in their - regulations without con flicting with those of the Ohio and Indiana roads; norarithdle latter without coming into conflict in solnedegfen_lirith the important class of roads which 'meet at Chicage, An independent posi tion suits It best, and 44 the only safe and wise policy. - These large combinations cannot snake regulelione to snit the exigencies of local wants, , . Ind ;as infinences adverse to certain interests may..obtain that supremacy and thus sacrifice certainromis for the benefit of others, it Is al ways dangerous to enter Into such combinations. Bipiratingan independent policy hut at the same time a conciliatory and just and hcinorable course towards connecting ends, a company can best guard Its own interests, and prevent the difficul tie,a_which Intarlably result from the:attempt to control the nnuntirement of roads whose Interests are widely different. ~ . We hare uolgrenalove for Pilitien at best, but.] the iresenteeontest has been so mixed up that it \ ha..v been peculiarly annoying and vexatious.— \ith the beet Intentions in the world to promote , the !meccas of correct principles and the welfare of the State, it seemed ahnoitimpossible to steer 1 char of the quicksands and whirlpools which be- . set ea 'on every aide. How well we have sue- )ceeded our readers can judge. ,-.. The dictates of a selfish prudence, if obeyed, would have leans to silence, but we have always considered that the place of n vigilant press is on the watchtower, giving, warning of danger, and at least indicating if not km 11141114) Irdiy•—, lVanerercan be neutral where principles are nt stake. If we can resist th'tendency to execs- i sive coal it is as much as .we do. , When this campaign.commene there was a . glorious prospect of a fair field, and ani excited contest on questions well defined and; of high moment. The Whig party and its alliei in this election, the Free Democrats, appeared in the ti.dd as the opponents of the national tuiminis- tration and of the encroachments of el ryr; and the Democratinpartyappearectas then pportors St, th of Pierce, Douglas hi Co. and of Sou aggres. national shin. Whatever our opponents may yto the contrary, these were the true and maid issues b 3, the controversy. In this'fight there wore the most cheering, We may say brilliant prospects of success for the anti-Nebraska forces. Every day served to weak en and discourage the Bigler and Pierce party nud to 'strengthen the hands and cheef the hearts it' the supporters of the cause of human free dim. At this auspicious moment arose the ele ment of Know Nothingism to influence and mar I hese hopeful prospects. As far as Mr. Pollock's elcetion is concerned it has been generally sup; posed that this secret element would secure his success, while it was conceived it would destroy the Dopes of the other Whig state candidates.— For our part we consider Mr. Pollock's chalices less cheering than if this secret political associ ation did not - 3 exist. We firmly believe be will be elected, but his chances in our opinion would h•tve been stronger today if Know Nothingism bad never been heard of. The same cause has else endangered the success of our county tick il, and bus infused an element of discord which will hardly be for years to come. We have in the workings of the secret politi• col societies in our midst, a moot striking ex- ionplificiition of the dangerous evil of introduc ing oaths and secrecy into political organiza tions. • We do not believe that one single object ilusireAby the Know Nothings will ever be se cured by the present improper and moist dis• estrous secret organization, while the cause they hive at heart will be permanently injured there by. Thoutands of good men will never con sent to enter into such combinations for any purpose, and will naturally be led into opposi tion to the objects aimed at, while opposing the mode of supporting them. If our ndrice is of any weight with any of our readers, they will forever eschew all such dangerous and improper modes of advancing a system of mfasures and principles. We know of no other way to secure the success of the principles we all as Whigs and Anti- Nebraska men have at heart, than for all, es chewing all secret cabals and societies, to come forward and support the ticket plated in noutioa [ion by the Whigs and Free Democratic parties. Then let the result be as it may, there will re main the conciousness of. having discharged a duty on sound principles, in an open and manly trimmer. 445,723 24 TO wniGs AND FRELI DEMOCRATS.
