EMBM ,HOME MATTERS. MeSTINO 01:1111 Patlolol 01 A PROBIBITOar 14 WON LAw.—Last crening at 7 O'clock, a ineet ing of those favorable to the passage of, a Prohib itory Liquor Law in this state, was held in the Iter. Dr. Bryan's church Sixth streeinenr Wood. The meeting emniscil by calling 'Dr. — .I.unes Wraj to the etiir. Wtn. Jack, • Titomas Bedpath, Willistai Dickson. F. A. Heisly, and Samuel linirde were chosen Vice Presidents. • James N. Lightner, Charles , et'Clure Hays and Thomas K. Wilson, were choSen Secretaries. The Rev. Mr. Collier Addressed the Tureen of Once in a feeling and appropria.e manner, after which Alderman Steel explained the objects for which the meeting -was called. Ifs stated the enemies of Prohibition were actively-engaged throughout the State in taking steps for the de • . feat of this measure, and' it behoved the friends of. Temperance to set in the matter 'promptly, and use them hest endeavors to prevent them from carrying out their object. The next elect tion was a very important one, for would de cide wile - thee/he people were to hive a Prohibi tory Liquor Law or not; the fileitda of the meas ure thee • should use, every honorable effort to promote its -success, and not bane it said, after the struggle was over,.that - the law was defeated bemuse of the apathy of its friends. It was to effect this end, and take sting to counteract . the efforts of the. enemies 'of Prohibition that the meeting. was called. The gentleman then moved tbat I committee be appointed toprepare resolu timmOn the subject for the convention. Tbb motion passed unanimously and the fol- . lowing committee was appointed: J. H. Poster, Thomas Steel, .1. D. Bailey, Wm. Everts and Mr. Sheriff. The committee retired and during their ab sence the meeting was entertained, by a short address.fromthe chairman. He regretted that the attehdatme wan not larger, and felt sorry to see such an apathetic spirit evinced bYthe people at. Ruch en important crisis, in the history of their'favorite measure. He hoped however, that the people would do their duty at the forthcom ing election, and die principles of Prohibition . would triumph over every obstacle. Judge McClure followed in e=very argumenta tive and interesting address. Ile spoke of the manifold evils nrish:g ont of the sale and use of intoxicating drinks, and wondered how a meas ure calehlated to abate these evils could meet with -opposition at the hands of an impartial and enlightened public. His speech was fell of sound arguments in favor of a.. Prohibitory law, and FM listened to with profound attention. At the conclusion of his-address, the commit tee returned nnd reported the followjng resolu tions, which mere adopted by acciarAtion: . Resolved, That the chair appoint a Vigilance Committee of five, whose duty it is to procure and thoroughly circulate tickets for a Prohibito ry Liquor Law throughout Allegheny county, ac companied with brief appeals to the people on the subject of its importance; and that said com mittee shall be in session daily until the election, with power to. select vigilance committee to cir manta tickets, and attend the polls in each elec tion district, and generally to transact all such business as may be necessary to insure for a pro hibitorytiquor law in Allegheny county the over whelming Majority expected of her, and which - site ought to and meat give. Rualred, That a Finance Committe of three he appointed by the chair, to collect funds for defraying expensee necessArily incurred by the Committee of Vigilance. Resoled, That said committees he earnestly requested to meet at the office of Aid. Steel. on Friday 'morning, at ten o'clock, to take immedi ate action for sustaining the cause. On motion, Thos. Steele, S. N. Lightner, R. M. Westervelt, George IL White and J. llFos ter were chosen a Vigilainse committee. C. L. Magee, D. W.
