Some persons assert that i! weshould merely announce its presence among rm, and there let it drop, without advising the pttLlie of ibi - eitent or announci4 the number of death!. It is asserted by such persons that i the rtyorta we give injure the: credit of the city abroad, and drive away customers and visitors and travel, and tend to promote an undue panic at home. We differ in tote with such persons. In the case of the:amigos of an epidemic, or the existence of a riot,. or anything else affecting the character and business of the city, as in all other matters, the true and only proper course for the press is to tell the truth ! The rumors ! which go Wreak and which travel on the wings; of the wind, are aliays worse than the 'reality. We cannot preventtheze rumors from obtaining , currency, and the only mode of correcting th em -is to state facts. To deny them , altogether, an j thus be guilty of falsehood, could any paper bit found to adopt so wicked a policy, would only make the matter worse, and to pass them over unnoticed would be little better. Such a course would „destroy all reliance upon the press, and when the epidemic subsided no one would believe the assertions of the papers in regard to it. We have been careful to deny the rumors which have obtained currency during the past season,' of the', existence of cholera here, because they were not' true, and we stated at the same time that - when 'it did exist we would make it known.. We should 'forfeit our pledge and the confidence of our read ers should we attempt to deceive thrmcwhen the disease really 'does exist among us. ,le to increasing the panic at home by publish ing the truth, the Idea is preposterous. Imag ination, excited by the existence of a fatal epi demic, always magnifies the calamity. The re ality is never as fearful as the horrors which hang over uncertainty. Every day rumor announces the decease or some prominent citizen which the published lists correct. Those who`nre 'opposed to these lists should recollect that there are thou sands of anxious persons in otherplaces who turn to them for information, and who are thusrelies , ,ed from harrowing doubts and fears: The reliability of the accounts we have pub lished are proven by the Board of Health, up to Saturday evening, which show that we are ratti er under than over the mark. The mortality for the week is given at 171-129 of chalere. These hitter took place during the last three days - of the week. „Since then the number of cholera deaths for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednes- day, amounted to 200. we have neither exagger ated or extenuated the fatality of the epidemic, ' and our readers may rely on us to give the real filets in the case. We hope by this course to give doe warning to all iho do not wish to run any unnecessary risks, and when the 'epidemic has subsided, which we hope will he soon, we expect to be believed when we tell strangers they may visit us with safety. We know this course to be right, whatever may be said of its policy: and we have no doubt that its 'policy is the best, an the sequel will show. INTEINATTONAL FCUITIVE Stxvxisit.--The Latest project of the 'South; for the benefit or slavery, la a treaty stipulation with Great Ihitain for the rendition of Fugitive slavea who flee to Canada. This project, started in the ex treme South, has met with uncommon favor, . corn among the most moderate of the Southern press', We should not be surprised to hear that Buchanan had been authorized by the Pres:- dentto.bring the subject to the attention of the British Government and to pram it to an •arty decision. - That a negative reply' will be given there can be no doubt. A nation which abhors slavery will never consent to recognize it by de livering up fugitives from its intoltdable oppres sion. The St. Louis Intelligeneer, a moderate Whig paper, says that " slaves are as much pro perty u cotes, and much more valuable," and that the government should not " betray its citizens into making investments in slaveS " under the promise of its protection, mid thee/ail to protect it.
