Presbyterianism in Pittsburgh; will be new to the most of our readers, and will be read with interest by all:- The tribute it pays , to the venerable Dr. Herron, who is still spared tests, ns - a shining light, connecting. the past with the present, will be appreciated by his fel low citizens of all creeds end classes: . _ Pirrstinnou.—The period .when this congre gation was organised is uncertain. It appears that in 1786, the ROT. Messrs. Beatty and Duf field,-who were appointed the Synod of New York-and Philadelphia to visit the frontier set tlements, and also some of the Indian, tribes, as missionaries, for two months, Were in this place, and found 'some kind - 'of a town.". They also 'found there the Rev. Mr. Mclngsn, chaplain. to the 42d regiment. Of what denomination he was, is not stated. The brethren 'preached in the fort and in the rillar,,e. There was then no regular congreption, had no house of;worship. It is probable that some of the other missionaries appointed by the Synod visited and preached In the place ; especially Mr. Power anti Mr. Finley; both of .RifOLD.WeTO preaching to the settlements some time before the beginning of the Resolutionery War; the latter of whom was atipeintedito labor two months in the West. and it is not likely that he failed to visit Pittsburgh. Dr. during his first visit to the Westin 1775, preached here on, the 2d Sabbath of September.:. Whether there were any furthervisits, or labors of Presbyterian min inters. or missionaries, during the next nine years, we's:a:mot leans Mr. Smith was sent to preach here on the 4th Sabbath of August, 1784. la the following year, the Rev. Samuel Bsrr, - after laboring some diort time as asupply, was recognized as the pastor by the Presbytery, with- out any regular installation. About this time the church was organized, and a small log house wo erected for a place of worship.: Mr. Barr continued the pastor till June 12th, 1789. For a number of years afterwards they were sum, sionally supplied by the Presbytery. In 1791, Mr. Makes, :a licentiate of the Carlisle Prerby -eery:, 'preached to thtra for a shortlims—perbisps about a year,. or even more. In 1793, (0ct.,) 1 haring applied for ordination, he was not able to give satisfaction to the Presbytery onthe subject of his experimcotal acquaiutaace with religion; and applying immediately for hSs dismistaim beck to his former Presbytery, he was dismissed, And ' . left the place. After Mr. Mahon left,' a licenti- . ' ate, by the name of Semple, who be came a lawyer, preached *there a short jime.— fa 1795,-the Bev. Messrs. Ported and 15: Smith were sent to supply ono Sabbath each., Thence, till June, 1790, they appear neither to have son ght nor obtained supplies from the Presititery. At the last date, the Rev. Robert Steele, who had left Ireland precipitately, without having time to get his credentialalrom Presbytery, but with testimonials from Lis former congregstion, and letters from brethren in New York, Philo delphia, and Norfolk, was allowed -to preach 'as a sapply--1.41. the following meeting of the Synod —to theneoplo of Pittsburg.. Mr. Porter And Mr. Henderson were also sent as supplies daring that year. Lturing, the year 1800, 3.1 r: 'Steele, though not fillU received, was Allowed to' act as a supply. IdsOctober,.though an ordained rain icier, Lo was L. 11.0 on,probation, and a text was assigned him for a trial sermon by the next rpring meeting. ',At that time (April, 1801), the Presbytery, not being satisfied with his sermon, assigned him another text for a sermon by the fall meeting. - In the meantime, the congregation askeir, for. Mr. Steels. as a stated supply .‘until the Presbytery shall finally receive or reject Lim." in October the sermon was not sustain ed, andthey appointed him another, to be deliv ered at the next spring meeting. Then (April, 1802), ho was taken in and permitted to Sake his seat with them, rather apeciali gratin; as it would appear from the minute. In , the meantime, lie was still acting no supply to - the congregation of Pittsbingh ; ' and fir rho following October, 118020 A call from this people was pot into his hands by the. Presbytery, and accepted by him: and thenceforward, without any further action by the Presbytery, - Le was recognized as the tor. _An this relation ho iontinned till his death, which occurred March 22d, 1810. • The Rev. Mr. Stockton then acted as supply for some time.-- The Rev Francis Herron, expressed his `intention of necepting a cal rozn this . chews April id, 1811, being then n : - member of the Presbytery. of Carlisle: Fr - oba that Presbytery lie was dismissed to join the Presbytery of.lted , stone, and removed to -Pittsburg in the ensuing Month of 31ny. tin the 18th of - Jane he was received by the Presbytery of Redstone, and ac cepted the call. CHOLERA ,AT CoLusenza:—.The Lancaster In, Land Daily,' of Monday last, gives the foll o*ing Account of a sudden and fearful bre:Mpg out of the ch o le ra, in Columbia, indhli State: • We have sad intelligence trent Columbia.. We learn that since Friday noon, up to the time of writing this Article, (7 o'clock Saturday after noon,) there here upwards of 80 cases of chol era, of which' number' no less than flu have proved fatal.' Seim of the most proMinent eiti zefis are reported as bring among the victims.-- - . We have deemeddt best, however, not to , publish dhe names of any, as there is a - probability that the accounts are more or lessZexiggerated. It is oftentimes the' case emit iihmi an epidemic , makes its appearance, especially in asmalltown, the people become alarmed, and the consequence is that very incorrect reports're spread abroad in regard to it; and, that it may prey° to have been so in. this Case js a "consummation de voutly to be wished." As we pit Monday morn ing's paper , to press on Saturday evening, an are of course unable to make so , thorough aninves tigation of the , mutter di would be desirable, yet the Messages which are being continually re ceived at telegraph Office in this city; seem to be confirmatory of the reports previously re ceived. - Thus - We fear that it is fully as bad as represented. And if as, it is probable that be fore nut , . papir shall be served to our subscribers the number;Of deaths will have been fearfully augtneated... In our next number it is probable that we shall--be enabled to a correct ac count of the ravages of thin fell destroyer. It is thought that - this disease has been engen dered in consequence of the low, stage of the Sus quehanna, and consequent exposure of decayed vegetable matter to the sun's rays. Thli would seem probable, as the river, it is said, is lower than it has been before in many years,df ever. The - North - American of Monday, adds the fol lowing • • • 'We learn from several Wiendiwhohavejust re turned from COlutabia, that on Friday evening' last, -about :lir o'clock, the cholera suddenly made its appearance in that town, and with so much virulence that (hiring that night no lees than thirty me, and den deaths occurred. Up to yesterday morning, the total number of deaths reached forty.five : which, in a population of 4500, is in the ratio of one pec, ceutum. Of the causes which have led to the failure, there may be differences of Opinion. There are many who arc not satisfied with the current statements, and a most thorough investigation will probably be demanded and secored.
