MONDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 11, 1854 ConfeTeel2!cciins. -'ll4 Jonterees appointed to put in nomination 'a candidate in opposition to Hon. Augustus Drum for Congress, mei at the public house of William Moorhead in letdiarat oa the.lst inst., and organized by appointing J.Row, of Indiana, Chairmrui, and Robert i3tit t of ‘Vestmoreland, qccretary. The following letter having been read, on motion Jones COVODE, of Westmoreland, I was unanimonely nominated for Congress. "LOCaPOILT, Aug. 28, To Alia' Row, A. W. Taylor and 7'. J. Coffey, Evrc Geartanes t —I have re:?ived your favor en closing a copy of tbo resolutions adoptod .by the Whig Convention of Indiana Colinty, held on the 15th inst., and also requesting an exprtssion of my views on the questions involved ii the third resolution. hi the resolution referred to, your Convention declared - against the repeal of the Missouri Com promise; against the further extension of Slave .ry - into the National Territory; against any fur ther aggression of the slave power on the rights and interestit.of the free states, and in favor of the repeat:Of the,Ymitive Slave Law. My opinions a.WI these questions arc clear Una-sledded; End I shall express them cheerfully and frankly. I have for years seec with pain and regret, the gradual encroachments of the slave power on the rights of the free states and the interests of free dom, and am rejoiced to see that the success of these encroachments ban at last aroused the spirit of the North to mhet them by proper leg islative enactments. j When the series of measures called the Com premise of IMM was adopted, the friends of freedom thought that the last humiliating eon cession to Slavery which it could ask or demand was made, and in conceding thus much contrary to their cherished sentiments of right, they only did so for the safety and security of their coun try. But this concession seems only to have af forded the grasping South a pretext for greater and more insolhnt encroachments. Sustained and encouraged by the present Administration, It has laid sacriligious Lands on a time honored statute and thrown open to Slavery a large and valuable part of our public domain; it ban pur chased from Mexico, at the expenditure of mil lions of the public money, a tract of Territory out of which to erect new States with slave holding privileges, and it is even now attempting to tense or bribe Spain into a surrender of Cuba toprevent the abolition of Slare4 there and to add :the erne to the slave Territory of the Union. ..ln my opinion, gentlemen, thes.o violations of public and plighted faith, in the repeal of the MissOuri Compromise, in the open attempt to in crease And perp'tuate Slavery in the National Territory in which . Slavery already exists, amount to an abrogation of Compromises forced upon us, and I now regard every question sug gested iwyour resolution as open for discussion and action and not by our acts, and upon the ground which they have chosen I think they anould be mit. I out, therefore, unequivocally opposed to the acquisition of any more slave Territory. ram opposed to the extension of slavery . to any part of our National domain, in any shapeor any pretext, and believe it to be the duty:of Congress emulating the glorious example of the confed eration of 1786, to prohibit, by solemn enact ment the existence of Slavery in any part of the National Territory forever. • I ato of courvo in favor of the repeal of that clause:of the Kansas-Nebraska act by which the Xlissonti Compromise is strickCn down. I. Rai now, and always have been, opposed to the F4itive slave law of 1850; and believing it to bafttagonistical to the humane spirit of the age, ant In favor of its immediate and uncon ditional repeal. These. entlemcn, two my sentiments frankly and freely given on the topics proposed in your letter and the rcsointinne accompanying it, and they tionstituts the platform upon which I will stand. These !Inca:ions will doubtlessly agitate the next Cenpeas,l /than hope to sae thV repreasti+ baleen ii*Tl free states avowing and acting upon such as 1 have expressed ; and will only when the North shall take this ground that we con ex pect to ace our country restored to its first and true position; for freedom is National but sla very Sectional. Very reepeetfully your eb(11.., terr't. Jono Coypu}}. The Uerent Mot Ia our arr. We have never witnessed a more general and wide spread excitement than was mimed in our city by the events of Tuesday afternoon:. During the evening, - groups of iadiiiduals were gathered at the corners of the streets, discussing the af fair in every aspect of the ease, and rumors of the wildest character were circulated in every direction. It seemed almost impossible from the various reports which reached us to present a satisfactory etatement of the affair, and welwete in a measure, obliged to rely upon the testimony of those who had seen the occurrence underoir cummanees of great excitement The almost universal testimony of those with whom we con versed, and who were acquainted with the de tails of the riot were embodied in the account which we laid before our readers yesterday. • A faller and more complete investigation into the origin and circumstances of this affair does not materially change the accounts which we phblished then and 'which we say were gathered from the most reliable and respectable sources. We have no inteiest whatever in warping the truth, and our sole object has been to give such a statement as would embrace all the material and established, facts of the case. It is, how ever, but a matter of justice to state that there strong doubts whether any pistols were fired from the church upon the procession, although it is confidently stated by several reputable indi viduals that such was the fact. The evidence produced at the inquest yesterday establishes beyond dispute the point, that as the procession of Protestant Association Lodges was passing, .quietly-along SVIIUnm street,•they were attacked with &twice bra hady of men from the factory. - of-Halsey It Taylor—that one of the procession was knocked down, and in this condition turned and fired a pistol upottthe attacking Party, which from the nature and description of the wound re ceived by Thomas IfeCarthy, may have been the cause of his death. The impression in the Lodiee and 'among Spectators, that the attack came from the church, was strengthened by the peculiar character of the ground in this vicinity, and from the position occupied by the assailants in Shipman street. There .can be no reasonable doubt both fromTevidenee already produced, and from the testimony of impartial w.tnesses, that the attack made by the body of men in Shipman Street upon the procession was the cause of the riot. If this were - the first occurrence of the kind which had taken place in the country, we should looltapon it in a far different light from the vied itt which wo now regard it. The country is tired - and wearied out with riots; caused main ly by those who regard their creed • attacked by the peculiar style of a hat, and their religion in sulted by the rant of u street preacher. Is it not sufficient to any that the authors - of these dis turbances are ignorant and bigoted, because they aro sustained by the intolerant teacbinga of ed ucated men. The time is coming when those, who appeaton every occasion to brute force, and who are always ready to convince an opponent with stones, will find themselves cowed by the determined courage of those who are really rind truly the friends of peace and order. What care we for tho bitter fends of Orangemen and Rib bon-boys? The friends of civil and religious freedom most unite, with oneaceord, to preserve the truc and 'substantial liberty, which allows freedom of sc ecelt and of conscience, and which one look upon the banners and insignia of pro cessions without a thought of violence. • We hold the real and virtual protection of all classes and creeds among the community in which we reside. We regard men of every na tion, color, and condition, as entitled to the pro tection of our laws ' 'and us under the security of our instittitions, and we advocate the priheiples of bunion freedom in their broadest and moat genial application. We would, not willingly do Injustice to any, hat when a great and flagrant wrong is committed, violating the peritonea and associated liberty which we all so dearly prize, We Should be wanting in our duty if we failed to characterize it in such language na it deserved. Catholic processions and - processions of Catholic Irishmen have frequently passed through our avenues, in all the poinp of hierarchal state, and with flags and ,banners, and yet- no man has dreamed of insult' or diaturbanee. We say to our Catholic population, to those who are their spiritual rulers , and adrisers, that the:tame lib erty which is'conceded to.them must be enjoyed by the rest of the community in peace and quiet ness. Tho eeverest. animadversions on their creed and their religion mast be borne, btaanan the liberty of Epeosh is the inalienable birth right of freeflon. G'az. FIRE ON sun One.—The steamer. Orb arrived from St. Louis on the Scl from New Orleans. She had a very narrow escape from being totslly con sumed by fire near Grand Gulf, on her way up. When the boat *as under way between Grand Gulf and St. Marrs smoke was seen to issue from the "Texas," which is a house over the cabin for tI,C accommodation of the officers. Flames burst out almost instantaneously from twq or three of the rooms in the after part of the house above named. The boat was directed towards shore, and in the hurry of the moment ran upon- a nest of snags, some of which tore away part of a storm donned some boiler deck timbers. The hose was brought into requisition, and to the rapidity with which thin was done, and the presence of mind and energy of ono of the pile% is mainly attrib utable the sav!o,-; of the boat from destruction. The passengers and hands on the twat deserve credit,,roo ' for the ready way in which they per formed what was their duty under the circum stances. So alarming was the affair that . the Captain ARE heard to express his conviction that boat was a "goner, sure." . A quantity of wearing apparel and furniture destroyed, and the Texas considerable charred, is, we believe, about the . full extent of the dam age done.
