A. trEDDWNSO3I--EDVCATION AND Scion,- SION.—A few days ago we called the attention of our readers to, the rebuke • administered to the celebrated Catholic Reviewer, Q. A. Brtoirssox, - of Boston, by.the "Pittsburgh ratholie,'! for the late articles on Native Americanism and Educa tion which have so great a sensation in the American Papal Church.. The last "Pitts ' burgh Catholic" contains a reply from Brownson. • which for meek salionission and groveling humil ity we have never-seen equaled. It is really painful te-seea man of learning and parts betray =eh abject subjection to erclesiastical power.— The rebuke of the nCatholic," though imperious in its tone, was =Ogled with an affectatiod of tendernese and personal "regard which BroWn son expresses his thankfulness for with "tears of . gratitude:ln his eyes , " and then proceeeds to ex cuse hi-Smelt inthe following strain: I beg you to - permit me an observation oC , two on some of your remarks. - I think I can bearid - monition and rebuke without anger towardsdiim Who administers -it, Mid If I know myself, , which is very doubtful; lam betterpleased with it than with praise, of which ! have more than I desire. ' I believe I was myself in my own Review ',the - first to rebuke the praises bestowed upon ma by the Catholic press on the occasion of my. Con • version.' ' I came into the Church because Con strained by the grace of Cod, because I felt oril my conscience - a load of guilt which was more than I could bear, becaise I had need of 'her, and saw that I had and could have, no hope outside ofer • communion. I did not think she had need of e. 1 and I have never rated my literary or intellect al abilities sohigh, as to regard them of any imp r- tone° to herio.this country. I did not dream of holding'in the Catholic world the place so I much above my , merits' which has been assigned me. Requested to continue my Review by adv. • end of the American Bishops, '1 consented to do .. so, and hare-continued it up to this time, not as well as I coo_ ld wish, but as well as I could, being what I ant.. I have worked bard, I hare studied diligently, and I have always acted under advice, and atom .publiahed an article icrittest by mprellf, '.. widow fret tabulating it to my Bishop, or toe the , - ologian appointed by Aim to examine my articles, ex ' cept now and then a literary article, or my liter. ant notices. The article on 04 , teMporal power of the Popes in my Ain't Reeky' and those en Native Americanism, and Edo ' radon in - my July number, were submitted to the revi sit' m of the theologian appointed "bY, the Bishop; of : • Boston 4.1 niy causen during his absence. I . ; I say pot this, Sir, to throw any responsibility from my shoulders on to-that of-another, but Lto , show yon that Ido not arrogate to myself quite '' so much: as I am accused of doing. ! The Bishop of Bogen, in whose diocese I live is the Catholic Church to me, at least in tht, fir st instance, and 1 am not aware that there is any !higher .voice through which the Church speaks to me, except that of the. Poor BrownsOn I - It is held for him to under- stand the complete submission, the entire abet. gation of personality for the good of the church, which Bomanivihrs requires: Being brought up . American Protestant, be quite innocently thoughthe had only to tell the truth, and relieve hlisheulders of the responsibility. The 4.Pitts _ btailtesdliolie" teaches him that he must bear the responsibility himself 'whether. it belongs to . him or not. Although he may have changed his - viewe e hie style, hlitheologY and his politics; at - the dictation of his Bishop, the responsibility is still his own. Ile must suffer in patience. The real author, the Bishop, must go scot free. Like the King, be can do no harm. la'regard to his heresies-on the school ques tion, Brownson presents a moot 'pitiable figure. Can any lower deep of abject, unreasoning submission be found than this! Here is a man of learning, of talents, -of thought, agreeing to have no opinion on any subject, which is not based on the authority of the Bishop, or the Pope! If his reason - and reflection lead him to adopt an opinion, or arrive at the ennvictionl of a fact, which the authority,—the Ilishop,—t..shall pro pounce erroneous, he is ready to retract, repro bate and condemn ! Ho submits conscience, reason, revelation awl common sense wholly to the dictation and control of authority ! This is Itoman Catholicism ! Even this humiliation does not save this self degraded man from a further castigation from, the imperious "Pittsburgh Catholic." It pre tends not to find in his letter a sufficient modifi cation of his sentiments on the school' question, and takes him to task as follows: We imagined that Mr. Brow - noon, after reflecting upon the course the Church has pursued for set end years past, in Italy, Prance, Ireland, America, andin every other country where the question was agitated in reference to that met of education of which Mr. Brownson has constituted himself, we will not my the advocate, but the apologist, would immediately recognize the uricatholieness of those sentiments which have drawn such a storm upon him, and with generous devotion, at once, sacrifice his own views to the spirit of the Church and the unmistakable tenor of her teach ing. No one can be mistaken about the view which the Church has taken of mixed education. She wishes, for the benefit of her children, to have it set aside and superseded by another, whereie se cular and religions instruction will be continued. Not because such systems as the common school are inferior, but because they are bad. Not be cause they do not offer ail the advantages we would wish, but because they offer none that is an equivalent for the risk that is run in accepting them. thee the Yelltothd Booms • e Daly Gantneon• ed lee %ate flatmat 'Ste e appear will please hand these In • The "Catholic,' in continuation, refers Mr. Brownson to the "Pastoral and 13th decree of the last council of Baltimore" as the authorities he is bound to obeylin regard to the subject of education. To oppoSe this authority, it says, "is juslfiable on no grounds 'At:freer!" Two leading facts', are deducia from the above exhibition of Papalirale and opinion. One is, the complete submission required of every Ito. mail Catholic to the Bishop, or other accredited authorities of the church. This submission ex tends to every thought, opinion or act which his soy public concern, or can in any way influence the public Mind. This renders it impossible for any Roman Catholic to maintain his standing in the church, and introduce any reform, any ame lioration, or suggest any new mode of action in regard to any matters even where doctrine' and faith are not concerned, unless he has the nppro val of the Bishop. The Hierarchy controls the press, the pulpit, the school house; in fact every source of information and every means of pro , fessiori. It enters the family circle; dictates the education. of the children, and exerts a stern censorship over every means of individual or public information. This is a fearful power, and in no country is it probably more zealously ex erted than in this. The other fact deduced is. that the Catholic Hierarchy in this country is still determined to continue its bitter warfare against the Common School system. Their past defeats have not dis couraged them, or caused them for one moment to lose sight of the great object in view. The scheme was a bold one in its inception, and the cast was Most likely thoroughly calculated.— Their first object is, to obtain the cheerful and hearty acquiescence of their own people. This is a workuf difficulty, but it is in a fair way of accomplishment. This advantage obtained, and with so large a force, well drilled,' they will watch their opportunity to throw their power into that political scale which will redound the - most to their advantage. They hope and ex pect, thus-to effect their ends, through demo gogueism, and the decay •of public virtue and patriotism. It behooves the people to bet on their guard. We have a powerful, well organized, sleepless foe to civil and religions liberty in our midst. It wages open war with ono of our cherished insti tutions ; an institution which lies at the founds lion of an efficient and safe free government- If that is lost, others will soon follow. Let us guard it, and strengthen it, and preserve it inviolate, and it will prove to us a rampart against the en croachments and dangers of ignorance, supersti tion and bigotry. Sr. Louis Rior.—We giro on our outride day full details of the St. Lillis riot. As our Monday paper is always worked on Saturday night, we did not get the news in season for yes terday's paper. The Harrirbury Patriot attempts to vindicate Gov. Bigler for pardoning Dr. Lachenour, and parades a letter from Garrick ?gallery to show that the Dr: was unjustly convicted. 11Ir. Male ry-was one of the counsel who defended Dr. La chenonr, and we do notsee the propriety of giv ing implicit confidence to his assertions. We were not before aware that the testimony of counsel for defence Was to be taken as conclusive of the criminal's innocence. If this rule is to prevail, we fancy that there are manyconvicted criminals who can get similar letters from their counsel and appeal Therewith to executive clemency.— Would it not be better, however, to let the jury acquit the accused wherever their coulvel allege them to be innocent? It would save the Gov ernor some trouble. Very respectable s and it may lm conscientious lawyers permit themselves, often, to become so enlisted on the side of their clients as to believe thentinnocent and to interpret everything in their favor. Fortunately for the cause of jus tice, .the interposition of a jury prevents this forensic sympathy from shielding the guilty, and a great deal of eloquenceiS thrown away annu ally-in trying to impose artful representations upon jurors in place of the stern realities of ev idence. When a jury is not influenced by an at torney's appeals and hie earnest asseverations that- his client ib innocent; the presumption is fair that theatterney Is mistaken; and with all due deference to Mr. Garrick Mallery we must be allowed to think that this Lachenour case is `one of that class. THE Ptrrsaraott Mt/ans.—The Union and Post do not deny the allegations of the //if-parch that a,secret political society exists hero among the democrats, which has parceled out the nomina.. lions for this fall, and which expects the County Convention to ratify its selections. Neither is our statement denied that hesitating democrats are inveigled into a secret organization and made to swear that they will support Bigler. *e. are therefore at liberty to conclude, as we do, that both these allegations are true and undeniable. We are hence famished with singular com mentaries upon the professions of the democratic party. TnE old line Democrats of the Third Ward, Cincinnati, with James J. Enron, late a member of Congress, at their head, passed resolutions denouncing the repeal of the Missouri Compro mise, but coupled the denunciation with the plea thai it was "of Whig inception." if these Cin cinnati Democrats ore honestly oppbsed to the Nebraska bill, they can find abundant and sub stantial room for their opposition without falsi fying history for the purpose. It is very true that the first direct proposition to repeal the Missouri Compromise came from Mr. Dixon, a nominal Whig of 'Kentucky; but it was accepted 4 robe by Mr. Douglass and the D mic party nod so made their own. One s 'low does not make a summer, and the act of on Whig is not the net of his party. The Whig party repudiated Mr. Dixon's proposition; and while it may be true that it was the inception of a Whig acting for himself alone, it is untrue that it was of Whig inception, in the sense in which these words are nscd by the Cincinnati Democrats. - THE • ORPHAN'S AoPPF.AL.—We publish to-day an appeal of the Managers of the Pittsburgh and Allegheny Orphan Asylum to the Christian and benevolent people of this community. It is still dependent upon the public bounty for the support of the children cast upon its care, and we trust its appeal will . not be made in vain. There are nano so fortunate, whose own children may not require the very kind of • charity extended to others, and if this shall lisp pity never be the case, it is a pleasing duty to as• sist others less fortunate, the discharge of which no wise man will choose to forego.
