Most truly we did not, and that ` because the ' , Examiner's article, token in connection with the-acts of its party, Wan its 'own best answer. Wo showed that the Demo cratic party eagerly arailed itself of clerical help in its political contests, and so demonstrated that its only objection to clerical interference was that it was not,'generally, on the locofoco The firmiiiner laid down the doctrine that dities of thot minister lead 'him away frank, and above, the turmoils and conflicts of the - political arena;"- and "that .it is highly derog atory to the character of a minister to en gage, actively in the secular pursuits of life, or to allow himself to become absorbed in any subject which has not a direct reference to his . high calling and its sacred dirties:" and in this connection we desired the opinion of that paper as to. the coarse of Rev. John Chambers, who • has ;descended to "the turmoils and conflicts of the political arena" for Gov. Bigler's sake, and allowed himself "to become su n a b , ject - which line not a direct. reference to his' eleriMl Calling. The E.ruminer is mum. It has no answer to Make. Th'e ReN. John Chambers a Democrat: - and therefore it is all right for turn politician.' The. Examiner also affirmed the position that a clergyman is "hypo means to suffer himself to be a candidate for political omoes and honors ;" and we thereupon invoked its condemnation up on the Rev. Dr. Dewitt, who accepted a State elfloe from Goi. Bigler, as weans upon tho Gov - ernor for thus tempting one of the elect; but the Tiamiser prefers to keep silence. We recall the attention of our Washington neighbor to these matters. If the students of theology * at Canonsburg have no right to express their views en a political question, why not con.: demo the Rev. Neu Chambers for entering the political are , to promote Bigkr's re-election ? And if; as We' are allowed to infer from the el. lence observed in reference to ear interrogato ries, ".it is ' allowable for a democratic clergyman to interfere in political questions, is it not as right for theological students at Canonsburg to do the - same? And again, if nee. Dr. Dewitt may take a State. oflice 'from the hands of the gocetinee and still keep his garments ellen, why may not a fare clerical students as weldpreserve their -vestments pure in expressing abhorrence of the Nebraska bill? The Examiner will see that it must either hurl its anathemas at Chambers and Dewitt or deprive its strictures upon the Crutonshtug student., of all their intended force. We must either have the 'privilege of asking it tei be consistent . or enjoy the pleasure of expo- sing itsbad logic. :The Larianter Indriendrat Whig propose.S . Hon. - Thomas - IL Benton as its candidate for the'Prs - idenoy, and .Robert T. Conrad, of Philadelphia, for Um Vice, Presidency. The'rleent of Mr. Benton in St. Louis by the combined forces of pro-slavery Whigs and Pierce dernomsas will contribute immensely towards making hint prominent as a candidate fin. Presi dent. The grounds of hostility to him in the city so longhonored by him are such that the great heart of the people warms to him as a man per secuted for - freedom's sake; and in order to vin dicate the principles struck at through him there, may -he a rally to his side formidable enough to _ command success. Among the possibilities of the future this is one not to be disregarded; and ifßenton were a younger man we should be in - clined to look upon it as a probability. It Ls too soon to speculate upon the next Pres idency, and we are not inclined to circumscribe the course of our. fature action by any prema tore committaLs; but we deem it wise to note these iticidental derolopementa of the times and beOreinired for the results in store whichthey , The Cleveland Plaindealrr and other ndminis testier" prints rejoice hugely over the defeat of Denton, while the Northern Whig press generally deprecate it. It is not a little singular to see Democratic presses exulting over a Whig victory and Whig presses mourning over the defeat of a prominent Democrat; and .the fact of ouch an occurrence re.minds us how much changed is the ; aspect of. political affairs. Old issues and old party 'hies are broken down; and men begin to • mistrallatennd affiliate who before were as wide 'gantlet IS the poles. The rampant Pro-shvery .piggery of St. Louis finds sympathy in'the bo som of Northern Locofecoism, and the two rush into each other's embrace with pease on their lips far the' defeat of a champion of freedom; while - Northern Whiggery, true to its impulses in behalf of liberty, treats the downfall of a South - - Demoerat and etatesman as ana • tloniltalegrtuoe. Thus it is that as newpolit /cid elements rise they seek newcomhinations; eventually; it maybe, the wheat will bo winnowed front' the chaff, the sheep separated from the goats, and men heretofore divided by dilly pre judices be brought into a penmen politieal coin munion. - By and by, if this happen, She real issues of,the day may be handleti according- to their Merits, and no trivial questions be permi tedtetnterrene their distracting presence. _ - Wises that the papers set down the result in St; Lea's as a Know .Nothing victory, which it was not. It is also am,oyinga s in the case of the recent special election in Virginia, to open paperspublished in an adjoining distrizt,.and find no mention made of the election. - This has been our fortune with the Wheeling PtiPers and we must-confess our indebtedness to a New YOrk paper for the first intelligence of an election concerning which the papers in the neighborhood have preserved the silence of death. Among the anomalies of life none is more . striking than this one of obtaining the first tidings of important events from quer tern hundreds of miles remote from the scene of action. LimrANA.—The anti-Nebraska forces aruzally iLg for a spirited * contest, in this State, at the October election. In the India - napelis district, lion. Lucien Barbour has been nominated for Congress; in the Sou:h Bend district, Schuyler Colfax; and in the Eleventh district, John W. Pettit. The latter is no relative of the Senator of that ilk. Tue Locofoco Nebraskals of the Columbus district, Ohio, hare nominated the infamous Dr. Olds for re-election to Congress. It was to the reckless disregard for all rules and precedents which this fellow, as Chairman of the Commit tee of the Whole, showed when the Nebraska bill was in'danger, that its passage was mainly doe. His district is largely anti-Nebraska, and we hope to ace him so thoroughly put under that he will never be able to get to the surface to breathe again. Tug Whigs of the Lancaster district have unan imously nominated Isaac E. Mester for re-elec tion. Mr. theater voted against the Nebraska bill, but his course indicated very clearly that he has no very deep-seated anti-Slavery opinions. Vie district was once ably represented by Thad ens Stevens, and we wiskit could he again. DimooEn, ron Ricuts.—Dr. P. Domino, a physician of St. Louis, died recently at the hotel where lie hoarded. The Intelligencer save be was a very old man, of parsimonious disposition, iffidTew acquaintances, and we believe, not a single intimate. Ile dressed ordinarily well, but in all other respects was seemingly in indigent circumstances. After his decease, however, a person, in overlooking his baggage, examined a small carpet bag lying in his chamber, and to his surprise, found over $4.000 in money, all in small bilis. Dying intestate and having no known relatives in St. Louis or elsewhere, the Public Administrator took charge of his effects, and ordered 'sale of the furniture and personal property in his office on Market street. While ' the salo was progressing on Friday, there was found in the cellar, in an old box. $1,700 in gold and silver. It was tied in small bags so rotted from age that the slightest handling re. duced the canvas to shreds. This discovery in duced a further exploration of the cellar and office, and it ended in a still more surprising result—ihe finding of near $4,500 in Missouri Bank bills, hidden away in the chimney. Diligent search was again made, but as no more money was forthcoming, it is probable that the entire wealth of the old man has been regained. A rumor prevailed, however, that about the com mencement of the sale a man was seen leaving the office with two small bags of money. This Dr. Domino, we are told, was a resident of Pittsburgh many years ego, and is remember ed by many as being penurious and not over scrupulous.
