REVIVAL.oi Tin Six Timue.—The Mir/a im Mercury, it leading and influential Southern paper, derotes a long article to a defence of the Slave trade and the proposition to revive it. extratt one or two paragraphs: In oar opinion, the time has come, when the 1 elTve trade should be discussed with other lights, sada higher argument than it has been hitherto. I For three quarters of a century it has been the 1 theme of vapid dechtmatiOn 'and shallow human ity. The world has heard of nothing but its abuses and horrors, themselves produced by the legislation which aimed to suppress it . , But of thegrest blessings it Las secured, the etvilizstion it has extended, the part it has performed in the came of christianity and progress, there has been scarcely a word. All has been; fanatical rant and denunciation, and the question itself has been abandoned to the management of mere zealots, whose philanthropy sprung from Trinity, and a reekleisness of the interests of others. * RG a• a a * ..lt would ho impossible here to. enter into an elaborate defence of the slave trade. A few sug gestions however, will point the current of our opinions. The slave trade introduced a race, of • E 1 . • a ges into contact with civilization and chria tianity. By this change, themost degraded, in human and. disgusting of: God's creatures, are. transformed and regenerated. It does not find the African a free Man, nod reduce him into bond age. But in his native jungles be is a slave ut terly at the mercy of his brutal masters. Those who are sold to the alave-dealers are, far the most part, captives in war, whom the victorious chief prefers to sell rather than massacre, AB he has a right to, and would do. None then but thy most prejudiced and ignorant dare deny that his a mercy to the savage and enslaved. African to fall into the bands of civilized man, to ex change Africa for AMerica—the bloodynnd ca pricions despotism ef.his own color, for the mild rule of the white master. True, there Ims al ways been much to shook, in the details of the slave trade, bet it arose not so much from its own fmturo, as from the influence of fanaticism. And its worst horrors scarcely surpassed thatan cesin the Emigrant trade and Coolie truffle, now openly and extensively carried on under the flag of England end America." Wo find these pariigraplis in the Baltimore American, a journal which affects to treat them as ridiculous, and as repreeenting no important 'share of southern opinion. We entertain a dif ferent view.- The initiation of the task of ?Cif: ving the slave trade 'must, of eourse,lo left to - 1 ultra among southern men; but the proposition will gradually gain adherents throughout the south, until it embraces all claises whose co-ope ration is desirable. Even now it is urged boldly is seveml quarters; and instead of being confin ed, for supporters, to the fanatic 'class, it will be found to enlist,a much larger number of advo cates than is generally supposed: The scheme now pending in the Senate to withdraw the Amer ican squadron from the African coast, so as to leave the slave trade without let or hindrance, has ardent and persevering friends in that body,' and will he pressed with all the energy they con command. We allude to this matter, now, because the attempt is making all around us to delude the Northern people into the belief that nothing of the kind is contemplated and that they may rest secure from all apprehension. A certain class of. papers, a few of which in to be found among tbb Wliigi, take great' pains to represent the South at harboring no schemes of aggression.—• The.Nelonska bill, they ILISLIre us, was forced.= them by Northern demagogues, ar.dthey accept ed it as a boon not to be refused; but they did ,not ask or desire it, we are told, and scathe most =offensive and chivalric (and all that) people in the world. The object of these rigmarolee so to preserve national political organizations intact, and keep the live men ot the North from unbar-' nessing the dead body to which they have been so long tied. Let thtm keep their eyes open, lest they be deceived with smooth words. The Post of yesterday makes a bold bid for the Catholic rote.
