I7ttaDarih • Gazette. ; Werintanrost, - June 10,1814. The "Free Democracy" of Pennsylvania—lmport toner of union between northern parties—A sup Pgestion for Gou Potiock—Certainty of his sue cesa. The position of tho "Free Democracy," as an tiVe political orgartitn4sn, in Pennsylvania, is e citing some concememong the worme,st and eat opponents of Slavery extension through t the country .: Pennsylvania Is the only one out o the great States in sitielt the Nebraska 'mind ' . have any hopeif success . New York is and s Whig through Locefoco diviiions. The po t five po ll 'cal scoundrelisto which has ruled Ohio for the years, has become so odious that the pee-, p e would have crushed the malefactors without is crowning provoindion. But Penresylrtnia h " net, up to this time, presented that united 1 f nt which renders the triumph of freedortiand its cause an abiolute certainty. -..--. There shoal(' be no: divisions in the ranks of those at the North whir are honestly resolved to check tit° advance of Slavery, and to punish its peat eicesses. The Whig party should be willing adopt principles:and I think has already es . sumed a position, which should satisfy every hon est opponent of Slavery aggression, whether, heretofore inown its an Abolitionist. or a Free Seiler. I understand the position of the Whig Party Of Pennsylvania to be that the repeal of the Mildsouri Compact releases the North from all comprhinlses or kngagements with Slavery, of ishatseever cimrieter - they may be. I under stand the Whig Otrty to becommitted to the re- . 1 Peal of the ftigitlite act, against the acquisition ! of slave territortinder any pretext, or for any rierpose 4 ,ltgainst. the lidmissfou df any slay° State,whettier- tinder- thn . alleged compact with . TITO> or under ',the ecMpromise of 1850, or in iii*attal . icii of the' Nebraska bill, and against the Whole policy or System. which has thrown and noir keeps the:potronage and influence of the General Government in the hands of slarehold 'era. I underst4nd these to be among the prima ry objects of the Whig party. If they are no , then I am feels to admit that I do not belong to it, and shall not ,co libcr for it ' s success. I observed the co rso of Judge Pollock in Con gress, end the, c. dered him a faithful repre sentative of the rights nod interests of the free States. I believe he may be safely trusted in any station. I trust he will receive every Anti-Slav ery vote in Pennsylvania. But the proper mea sures should, be taken to unite men of all politi cal affinities against the common enemy, which I take to'be Slavery nod the pro-Slavery democra cy. In this view of our position and our duties I respectfully suggest that Judge Pollock should make an explicit statement of his opinions on the issues which now occupy - the attention of the coon_ try. Every concession amt affecting principles should be made, for the sake of a hearty, effi cient union of the northern men. Why cannot Judge Pollock write a letter fir publication cov ering the points I have above named? The true _position of the Whig party of the North [we cannot affect co-operation with the Southern politicians. in this crisis] appears to me well stated in the following article from 'the Albany Evcaing Journal: , "If the North is what it clehr.s to be, and what we-bare. of late, had gratifying assurance that it will he, this day ends the era of compro mises. With the band of Representatives that have nobly resisted the consummation of this in iquity for its standard-bearers, it will declare that there shall be no more new eta, States. That thereshedl be no more dare Territories. That Mere shall be no more Northern Covreseraenseith South ern principle,. It will seek the immediate COlOstko tion of Nettraska.ty More who can yet save it from the intruding curse. It will take a MA'AM pled g e of the men it *ends to Washington, that their first and Lost rots there Mali be out for repeal and free degio It will tend no Mors fugitives back without a IrgUi 2 . trial. It will sweep tlarsry out of every . npakwesreorser tvhcre Ms . General Gevernswat has frgetfidion; imiiiison it within itsAftsca Stab* . and surronnd it there with triple bands of steel. It Still "establish jasfire, prOptote tranquility, and Setlsse Me blessing. of liberty to Oldf and to its posterity." This the United States will do, If they have rt , - mined the spirit of their founders. If not. then God help the Republic, for its days are number ed. Socha gigantic Confederacy of crime as it must otherwise become, never existed else where, cannot exist here, and ought not to exist anywhere." The "Liberty men," "Free Democrats," &c., of Pennsylvania would enthusiastically rush to the standard of Mr. Pollock, if he would distinct ly stamp upon It the above declaration, and so I -believe would thousands upon thousands of Dem ocrats disgusted with the treachery and villainy • displayed by thou leaders in the Nebraska out rage, and their now fully developed devotion to slavery. fhe "Free Democracy" have had a State Con vention, and have made a nomination for Gover nor, &a. I have no acquaintance with Mr. Potts, its candidate fo the first office, but as I ant in formed that ne-a.private gentleman ho laworthy of the support of those who placed him in nom': nation, I presume he may poll from eight to twelve thousand votes. I think Mr. Wilmot would have carried fifty thousand, chiefly old Democrats not lashed to the car of slavery.— Them votes ought not to be thrown away. They ought to be and may be secured for Mr. -Pollock. I know -of no. concession, esierilloe I would not make to crush out slavery aggression. I may add that since commencing this letter I have received intelligence of the state-of Seel; lug throughout Pennsylvania 'which leaves no doubt whatever ill my Mind that our candidate will be elected by an unparalleled majority. We have repeatedly appraised our readers of the existence and progress of the great Southern conspiracy for, the invasion and conquest of Cu ba, preliminarY to its addition to the Slavehold big strength Of our Union. We call it a South ern conspiracy, though quite- aware that it has ramifications throughout the Union and a pow erful branch it; this City, where a considerable share of Its funds have been raised, because it is Southern in its origin, its leaders, its focus'and its aims. New Orleans is its headquarters, tho' mucks of its strength in found sunong the planters, merchants nod slave-traders of Mississippi, of which State both its chosen leaders (Oen. John A. Quitman, son of a Dutch Reformed ';clergy man, and born up the Ilndsop,) n'uti 14 [Acute's ant (Oen. Felix }lumen) aro reiiiiients. But New Orleans bas contributed the larger quota to BO incitements, its plans and its funds, and there its organisation and ha muoteringo go forward with the most undisguised activity, in spite of the knowledge of the leaders that the Spaniards ore cognizant of nearly all their doings, and that Pezhala receives pretty accurate accounts of • • them by every steamship. They understand that they have •to beat the Spaniards (any how, and they do not tear any real interference with them by our government. And so, beyond enjoining silence on the Southern. Press, lwhose Editors are nearly all in the plot,) they take scarcely a • precaution against publicity. The bar-rooms of New-Orleans aro vocal With reports of who is go log, and who has subscribed to the fund, how much it amounts to, &c., .t.e. We violate no confidence in stating stew additional facts: • Oen. Quitman has returned fr . om Nevi• Orleans to Mississippi, and the sailing of the expedition is for the present postponed. Cause—want of funds, owing to recent failures of several of its leading - pecuniary backers in Noir Orleans. An effort is now to benutdo to raise more money among the up:river planters—with what enemas, remains to be seen.. The calculation is that the -first division; numbering 5,000 men-1,000 of 'them Mississippi rifles, and 1,000 snore armed I with a newlpatent rifle—will be afloat beton - the lst (We don't believe it.) Should it get off as calculated, .!twill be very weak in ar . tlllery and utterly, destitute of cavalry, so that the Spaniards mnstbe poor tools if, with 20,000 appointed,—at least 10,006 of them 'distiosable—they cannot use up the invaders be forethe stettniships can bring the second'disision to their assietance.
