The reason is phda. The Brooklyn rioters were de mocrats --friends of "popular' sovereignty," an supporters of the Nebraska bill. Mobs to res cue a human being from Shivery are most Lein ens, in democratic estimation ; but mobs to put down abolitionism, mobs to ransack abolitionists' bottles, mobs to lead Garrison through the strget 'with is halter' viand his neck, mobs to destroy abolition presses, !bobs to shoot down Lovejoys, 'mobs to overturn law and order in Rhode Island, mobs to put down monopolies, mobs in favor of the ten hour principle, and mobs to put down Native Americans and street preachers, nre venial affairs, to be - lightly condemned, (if at all,) and excusable, considering that those against whom they are directed , are not democrats. . SPEAKINO.—At every cleition held since the admiuistration of Prisident Pierce totinatted itself to the work. of slavery propa gandism, it has been signally defeated. The people embrace °Very opportunity to rebuke the sordid and corrupt officials who are prostituting ' the government to the vilest of purposes. The last evidences of this are found in the re• cent elections in Washington and Philadelphia.— At the'last ellictiOn in Washington city, Many, the Democratic candidate, was elected by slimy/ `majority; now be is beaten by 430, with all the patronage of the administration to hack him.— The following dispatch tells the tale • WASUINOTON, June 5. The election for Mayor of this city has re-outt akes 'predicted in my despatch of this morning in the success of Mr. Towers, the 'Whig candi date. The official returns have not yef been made public, but enough Is known to make it certain that Towers lets received a majority in Ave ofthe seven wards, and the entire majority is from four to five baunlml. • The Board nro al. Whig. The election derived peculiar interest from the fact that the Onecutive ban openly exercised ite influence for Money. the present incumbent, which, it is reported, wen: so far as to threaten clerks with removal if they did not tote for Mau ry, unit front the threnta of prominent Adminis tration Senn 10, sod inetobers of Congress that the appropriations for the eiti'would be denied if Mr. ;•burry nos nut elected. Much escitement tae manifested throughout the day but the voting- passed-off quietly, and althoughindividual collisions have. taken place, no serious disturbance occurred. Tho election of Mr. Tower* is considered as a decided rebuke to the Athniniettation and those members of Con gress who have interfered in it. In Philadelphia the election was the first since the old city and county districts were consolida ted under one city government. The vote there fore embraces what has heretofore teen known as Philadelphia . city. and'. county. At the Presl dent's election itt 1882, the vote for Pierce in the city_and county was 20,022, Scott, 24,578, while the free soil and waive Later was only 1774; showirtgl449 majority for Pierce Over Scott, and only / W.slw, than all other candidates combined. ,This Was less than two years ago ; and now we find the administration candidatesbeaten by from 8,500 to 10,000 votes ! _Thebattle in Philadelphia was fought distinct ly on the Nebraska inane. The democratic can didate was urged as the friend- of the adminis tration at Washington, and his election claimed ass fitting endorsement of the President's course, while the Whigs and those who co-operated with them were careful to take an open and honest stand against the Nebraska bill. The verdict of condemnation iii, therefore, 'a terrible one to the President and his coadjutors, and a forerunner of the more emphatiii Condemnation which be administered in October. . • As OLD Twou..—Some scribblingloceloce has a communication in the Port of yesterday, sign ed "Caro," ostensibly adiliessed to the editor of theiJoursialrand.filled with such . low abuse of us aa tho author has been aide to leans trona the conscienceless editors of the Post and Union.— The writer professes to be a Whig—one of that kind of Whigs whose latitude is Tar south of this region; but it is easy to see from the slang he uses that•, he is only a locofoco in disguise, who can find no-Utter means to show his natural blackguardism than by assuming an honest garb to serve the devil in. Its ad vent now, is announced without provoking the panics, or exciting the fears, which were its in variable accompaniments some years since, when its pathology was something wore of a mystery than It is now. The disease, it is well known, has been exist ing in Great Britain, more or less, for many months past. It prevailed in the cities and larg er towns of Scotland all last winter, finding many victims, it is true, but, disrobed of the suddenness and almost invariable fatality which were its most marked features iu 1849 andltill, it has in a grentmeasure ceased to alarm. The cholera, at one time, was believed to be to sort of .scourge, scoffing at all the laws that govern or dinary complaints, and laughing .to scorn the most sacred maxims of the materia modica.
