Several Billed—Tweary.five or Thirty Badly Scalded. About seven o'clock yesterday morning, Feb ruary 16, the starboard boiler of the Alton pack et, Kate Kearny No. 1, exploded with great force. She was just in the act of starting when the explosion took &tee, and had on board about twenty, or thirty passengers, besides the officers and cre*. The, explosion was heard a distance of several Squares, and so great was its .power that the entire upper works of the hoist, as far back as the wheel-honie, were literally riddled I and fell With a crash upon the main"deck. By this accident one or two whore bodies were recovered, one* a negro and the other a clerk band, were instantly lulled, but unfortunately several were blown into the river and drowned. A gentleman who was on an adjacent boat at the time informs us that he saw three men drown. Tie number of persons sealdeit, so far as we have been able to ascertain, amounts in the ag gregate to about twenty-fire. Rev. S.. G. fins sowtty, Rector of St. George's Church, in this city, was a,passenger, and was terribly injured. His skull was badly fractured, his face disfigur ed,- and one orbit; legs* broken in several places. When recognited, it was not done without much difficulty, be WAS taken to his residence in almost a lifeless state. Maj. Brat; IT. S. A., was also on board and severely injured. His physicians fear that he has received internal injury, from the inhalation of steam, and las situation is critical. Yesterday evening, Maj. Brat's symptoms were more favor able, and he is expected to recover. A short • time after , the explosion the wounded were re moved from the wreck and levee, and taken up to the Police Office, and from there to the Sis ters' Hospital.-We.paid a visit early yesterday morning to this Institution, and visited the Ward where the sufferers were confined. It was a sight calculated to make the stoutest heart quake. Fifteen men lay stretched upon beds of suffer ing, their faces and - bodies most horribly man gled and disfigured, while the groans that went up from their agonised hearts, testified how fear ful was their affliction. The. sufferings of some were so acute that they had to be strapped to their beds to keep them from jeinpingeut in anguish. The swollen fa cos, black with the Wising steam, was an evidence ,that the work of destruction wns complete. Below we give a list of the names'of those per , sons who are at the Hospital, under the charge of the Sisters. It is proper to date that 'Several who wore scalded were taken to the various hotels where they had been stopping, to be provided for. J. E. Newberry New York, aged 40 years. John McCabe, Ireland. aged 28, 'years. William Cheeves, (colored) Illinois, 24 years. Favorite nerdy, Alton, 23 years, second En gineer. Bro. James O'Keefe,2, Ireland, 3t ears. Charles Corenee, Germany, 28 years. Daniel Keefe, Ireland, 18 years. Bernard E. J. McKenzie, Scotland, 28 years, James Carenaugh Ireland, 25 yeano. Caknoiin ' Mr. Brown, the mail agent, was also on board," and standing in the Social Hall. Ile fell with the wreck to the main deck, and strange to say,was only slightly injured. One man, whose name , we did not learn, says that he was standing near 1 the clerlia office, and Ids first Sensations were a gentle .rising under his feet before the crash came. Ile was thrown out on shore, and fortu nately escaped with only a tow slight bruises. Some idea may be gathered of the force of t this explosion, from the fact that a fragment of the boiler, Weighing over one hundred pounds, i was blown-with such violence, the distance of a square, that it struck the wall, in the fourth t story of the occupied by 31ess , rs. Wiggings kAuderlon, on the corner of Market street and the Levee, displaced several bricks and cracked the Wall, which is two brick thick, through.— One of the fragments struck a dray horse stand & l ing on the Levee, and bled bibs profusely. It is'imposible at the time we are writing to estimate the exact loss., A gentleman wbo was standing on Market street at the time the explo sion took place, states that he saw a man rouse distance in the air, vrithhis bands outstretched, and that La disappeared in the smoke. Capt.Bruner, we understand, is injured, and was either on the: hurricane deck or ascending near the wheel house when the explosion took place. The clerk, Mr. Jas. Godfrey, was in the office. and was somewhat injured. The pilot,Mr.'S. It. Packard, had just stepped on to the hurricane deck fionl the wheel house, when the explosion occtwreili be received no injury. " Major. Gatlin, of the U.S. kmy, was on koird, but escaped with little injury. A little boy, his son, about four or five years of, age, was badly hurt. The first and second Engineers are at the &s -pits:l, and hurt so severely, that their recovery is Considered hopeless.' Their names are A. and F. 'Hardy, brothers. The cause of this - unfortunate catastrophe is wrapped in profound mystery. Justice demands that a thorough and searching examination ettcruld be bad, and, if there is any blame, let the penalty, and responsibility attach. Human life has not, got ti, cheap, even in this Western coun try, that occurrences of this kind should be pass ed ever as oma of those .ianavoidablo accidents." The steamer SamCloon had the after-guard of the ladies' cabin somewhat injured. Late last evening, we paid a visit to the Sisters' Hospital, and found, among the list offnames above mentioned, that three had died, viz: °P. Hardy, the Second Engineer; Daniel ffeefe and Charles Corence; the latter died about dark last evening, after suffering the most excruciating agony, having both legs and both arms broken: The rest of the unfortunate victims seemed to be as comfortable as the painful circumstances in which they were placed would admit of, having the best medical assistance and provided With kind and - -gentle 'nurses to administer to their sufferings. Two :gentlemen stopping at the Planters' Rouse had engaged their passage to go on the boat; and had given orders to the porjer to wake them up in time. By -some means ,they were a little behind, and expressed great dissatisfaction. Intent, however, upon getting aboard, if possible, they started at a full run down Chestnut street, and got upon the levee just in time to see the boat blown into fragments. There were only two lady passengers on board; Mrs. Olin and Miss Harrison, who escaped unin-' jured, being in the ladies' cabin at the time.— •During the excitement, and in their fright, they passed over to the steamer Westerner, lying alongside.
