We bale always said that Erie was fi e4:-iith in theftrostter or the Railreait Cem ,i':panies, and that She could show's good reason for a part of the excitement which has prevailed • --nevertheless we think she has made a mistake , is attaching so much importance lo a matter of I doubtful utility to auy place. So far as Cleve laud is concerned, she has no break of gauge,- she 'never asked for auy, and she desires uone.- 7 The Journal writer, either to make a telling point against us, or to give ventto his malignity towards that city, has displayed his ignorance of the whole question by hinting at a break of gauge at C 1 -eland. That city is a Model place in this respect. it not only den:Muds no forced adiantages to secure business, but it Lai built a splendid eating-house.at the Railroad depots under . .-the hill, so that passengers can pass through the out-skirts of the place, without go ing into the city proper at all, and can obtain every cm:Crest. of the best hotel: Cleveland has also placed all her depots as near together se imssible, so that passengers ore put to inconven iieuce in making the transit. ilf this is selfish ness, it is of that enlightened and liberal 'quality Iwe should like to see universally imitated. liming thus made his charges, the writer seems to have had en instinctive consciousness of their weakness, and he proceeds to infuse a i l eatfirient amoimt of suspicion of mares to make the blow effective, In this he imitates the dis guised assassin, of which he is a fitting type, who 'impregnates his dagger with some subtle poisori that it may inflict a fatal wound, even though his treacherous and cowardly hand should fail in givitngn home thrust. lie insinu ates that ourformer residence in Ohio, and our 'connections in the vicinity of Cleveland" have 1,1 us to adopt the views which he assorts are detrimental to our interests. "Our intercom," nays, "have affected our decision." We did ve the good fortune to reside come five or six years in Ohio, when a boy, some twenty-Aix years ago, since which time we have lived in community: but our "connections in tine viz entity of Cleveland " exist only in the imagina tdoi of the anonymous assassin. We have so Linde of this world's goods. that, all cuts interests are confined to this county. We should haveho olijfttion to °aria lot in Cleveland, or a farm in its vicinity, hut, unfortunately, we should not be the whit tine poorer, were the Forest City to ex perience all the calamities which the writer would gladly inflict upon •t. • We are charged. with being inimical to tine' in t••rests of Pittsburgh., This is nut the first time this charge has been made by persons as malifi sant and selfish as himself. If the writer can find one -ingle regular reader of our paper to believe it, we will give hint the credit of sin cerity- in making it. Our defence is our col ninits. To them we appeal. The last charge is, that we-have "villitied and abused" the "resolute women" of Erie, who hinve so far forgot their position and sex as to defy-Alte laws, enact the part of mobocrats, and 'turndown the railroad bridges. We deny the villification; :. but we admit their conduct has met with our most unqualified condemnation. We consider the act disgraceful to Erie, to-tine 'gen of Eric, and to the women of Erie. If the Journal writer thinks not, ho is ,welcome to enjoy his opinion; but 'let him, and:those who think with him, reflect upon the consequences of thus giving the reins to a lawless and unbridled of misrule. If the authorities and Courts of the State are impotent to eubserve the ends of justice, nndkh, , e wild arm of mobocracy has to ho resorted to. did is encouraged, then farewell to tlif; high character heretofore sustained by Penn sylvania as a law-observing and law-abiding com munity. Our sympathies were with Erie up to the point of aggression upon the constituted au thorities of the country; beyond that not a step will we gb.' Does the Journal writer reflect 'Upon tine fatal stab he would inflict upon the welfare of Pittsburgh, when he sympathises with Riede ings of the Erie mold Does he not know that the • credit and character of this city' is FA , . rinuely affected abroad by such. follies ! I; 'es he not know that we have now four impor trot Railroads, in process of .construction, and necessary fur the future welfare of this city which are wholly dependent for the means 'of completing their undertakings upon the charac ter the City and State bears in the great centre of financial and : commercial operations! If his narrow concur ia and malignant feelings gain in fluence, Pittsburgh would be truly disgraced and mimed. Of that, however, we hare n 9 fear. If the editor of the journal will divulge his name, it will be found that he • stands nearly alone in . this commun i ty, and that he cares more for gratifying his seetseless passions and promoting his own selfish ends, than he does for Pittsburgh or Pennsylvania. The editor of the Journal having admitted this personal attack, will, of course, do os the justice of giving our defence. .v....ngltt.s, pus- FROM WASHINGTON CorrespOndenne or the Pittaborsal Gazette.. WA SIIESOTON, January 19, I PL'_):4 The Erie affair is getting interesting . . The delegations from Ohio and New York are moving to procure tome action by the President or Con gress, or by both, for restraining the violent proceedings of the people. Senator; Wade and Chase introduced a deputation from the railroad company to the President, requesting his inter ference. He., declined • on the ground that he had not sufficient evidence that ate civil au thortties.of the United Slates'were 4ahle to ex eilute prkexe in and about Erie. They then ac companied the parties to the ; Secretary of the Treasury, to whom complaint WWI made that the Collector, Light-house keeper, and postmaster, of Erie were •leaders arid- encouragers Of the rioters, and ought to be removed. Guthrie intimated that the matter would he 'considered in Cabinet. The matter was also discussed to in the House Mr. GrOW, successor to David Wilmot, attempt ed to defend the conduct of the Erie petiple from the attacks of Mr, Wade, in the Senate. I oh eerve that Judge Thomption, late member from the Erie district, and counsel for the personain. volved in the disorders there, is here, endeavor ing, no doubt, to counteract the effect of the ripresetatationa rolde by opposite parties to the .President and Congress. • The President has issued his proclamation against the California Filibusters, when it tau do no sort of good. The matter of the piracies and massacres of those villain's on the defence .lelm Mexicans. was canvassed at some length to day, in which Mr. Gait; received tome very -severe hits from Mr. Pettit, of Indiana; and SisiOds:, of Illinois; and Mason, of Virginia, came out for impunity to Filibustersand , Filibusterism in general. • To the !loupe, the New York quarrel was fur !her Wisritgled. I regret having admitted the correctness of the first-report of the Bedini disturbance at Clip; cianati, and written in juatifieation of the entre geolis conduct or the police on.that occasion. I fully- agree with you that some of the moot scan dalous violations of law recently perpetrated, !vivo been committed by the appointed.adminis. trawl of law-J-outrages distinguished by bru tality and violence rarely exceeded by the most desperate ruffians, whom we look upon as the natural and habituiii enek:iies of the peace and goal order of society. It appears that the Ger- Mllit Freemen were neither engaged in nor con temoated any breach of theace, when they were assailed by the mercenaries of the City Couneily, frantic with eagerness, it would seem, to prove their • devotion to an anti-American priesthood, and an incendiary , messenger from a petty Italian Firince—entirelyunrecogpized, bo It remembered, by this =government, and who should have been sent out of the counliy , long ago as an inveterate breeder of riot and diatnr. bane°. Justice demands that the whole gang concerned in the attack upon tho Germans should be Visited with the full rigor of the law. *The pretence that there wis'sny danger of violence to Bedirli is Sufficiently disproved by the testi mony of the priests and other candidates for martyrdoni„ in the house with him.
