The sestina route examined from the city of Pittsburg to a point on the Toughiogeny River eosh distance below (JenneMettle, was com ineneed by crossing the Monongahela, River from our depot ground to Birmiegham, thence following the side hills to Street's Ran, and that valley for about four miles, we pass over a sum mit into Lewis' Bun and descend into the valley of PetereCreek; which we follow to the Monon gahela near West Elisabeth, thence following the Hate and aide hills of the river to Little-Redstone creek near Cookstown, we follow it to the high ground near Perryopolis, froth which we descend into the valley of the 'Youghlogeny, grading down Washington's Rau and the Southern side kills' of the River until , connect with the Yonghlogheay line below Counialleville.. It _ls susceptible of much loo prorement;and before adopting-aline, further examinations - should be made upon it. Efforts are now being made upon it to obtain a large conditionalenbeaription. Should they meet with 1110041011, the vast Meal trade which the Monouga• hela route promises to a Bail Road through that region, the extensive coal beds which would be afforded as outlet, considered apart from the engineering merits of the line, entitle it to cert. one consideration. Variaus lines to save diet tense were tried, not only upon the Motionsahe. I la, but upon the route along the Youghlogeny, several of which are to be farther examined early next 'primp, a report upon them hereafter, I trust will enable us to show a considerable shortening of the line. The prineiple upon which these lines to cave distance will be examined, is that to shorten our route one mile will be considered equivalent to the saving of $50,000. The gauge of our road will be four feet eight and • half inches, the same as the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road, the Steubenville Boil Road, the Pennsylvania Ball Road and the Ilemplield Rail Road, connections with all of which are practioshie from our line. The width of the road will be the same as up on the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the road en-1 perstructure an improvement upon the beat now in use. In view of the time it will take to com plete the Tunnel at the summit of the Allegheny mountains economically, -I would urge that OS. rangementa be made for putting it under contract during the present winter. In the hands of skilful contrasting it will take but little over two years to finish it; 'bat should it be given to parties unaccustomed to" work of such magnitude and peculiar difficulty, it may be a much longer' time before it will be done. Certain portions of the line between the city and Connelleville, should ho put under contract early next spring, and maybe completed within one yeir from the period of commencement. In order te enable us to press forward our work with vigor during the coming year, additionel individual enbeariptions should be proonred. .I urge upon the Board the expediency of niskiogns effort at this time to eniarge;their amount. The ditiseas of Pittsburgh, considering the importance of this workio them, should make more liberal Individual subserip. lions.
