The weather was en bad (rainy) that we did not hive the fort until the next day. We started on the 28th, 'though it was still raining hard. On the Slot we passed Bent's Pert, now In ruins, and on the let June reached the point on Arkansas where, l'aookirding to our maps, we should have found the' outh of the Huerfacke. -. I Informed you in my last that we had left Leroux at Fort Atkin. eon; unite ill with pleurisy. We were therefore compelled to rely mainly on our Magi, not • MID in our party having been over thin route before. We'did not find the Huerfano until we had as cended the Arkansas some .terenty.fiee miles further.. Our first view of it was 'a long line of bluffs whloltrun parallel with it on the east.— Wettest eel' it about fon, mil& from Its mouth, and found it heavily timbered, with fine grass, both In the bottom sad on the adjoining prairies. It le a bold, rapid stream, from fifteen to twenty lards. wide, and about fire deep in 'the channel, near where we made Cut camp on It. As I t was deeirable to °thee it that eftethoon, we could not go to Its mouth. Of the four maps we had with no, we .found the 0110 iil6mpUed by order of Col. W., Senthern Spanish Peak, 8. by W., and Northern Spanish Peak, 8. B. W. from the mouth of the Beeline. , tAfter cromieg the Buechel°, our route lay on its western (or let), bank. We found the grass. ea everywherenbendent and nob, much more so than on the Arkansas- We camped on the night of the 2d a mile below the canon. On the 8d we went to the foot of thelmountaine. Oa the 4th we smack the wagori and Indimatralle from Ilerdscrabble and Greenhorn, leading through the Pees over, the flaugno de Chris% and camp ed that night on the headwaters of Cuohadas, a fork of the Huerfano. Here begins the Erie Extension Canal and tllackwater, on which the State spent some three or four millions and then gore it away unoomplete toe private* company on eon dition of completing it, which was some bow ef fected. The State dams are adjuncts to the Ca- nal, but afford an abundance of water-power, which, beyorfd the demands of the Canal, is pri vate property by original bargain with the State. The upper dam eels the water back ' about seven milts ' forming an immense reser •voir. From this darn downward, the coulee of the river is sparsely studded with flour and pa per mine, pall and tub facteriee, &o. &o , though not a tenth part of the water power already pro aided is 'employed. The lowest State dam (141 feet) is not used at all, being near the Ohio , and subject to backwater therefrom to high stages. The steep acclivities which rise some three hundred feet from the Beaver Valley to the up lands on either aide: are frequently and deeply Creased by ravines er gorges down which i flow streams now merely visible, but which at some I seasons are petty tenants, washing off the earth ' and laying bare the grata in position. There strata Melinda four of the beet Coal (bitumenoue,) from eighteen inches to three or four feet thick, and neatly or quite horisentel: two cr three of Iron Ore, with Clay, Slate, Lime and Sandstone —the latter excellently adapted to building, entitling freely and being very soft in its origi nal bed, but hardening when exposed to the air. Part of the 'Lime is that need in. the Mann i - Facture of ilydninlic Cement ,while, much of the Clay le of the kind required for Fire-Belot, which may be made here for $6 or $0 per thousand. I explored-one pit whence an exact lent Coal is taken to the depth of 28 inches, with Fire Clay below to the depth of seven feet, the 'roof overhead being Slate, as smooth aid even as the ceiling of any chamber or drawing-room. The TartOtla strata 'compelling these birds on bath aides of the Beaeer appear to overlay each other horizontally, or with no dip that is percep tible to the casual obeirver, and in some places, Coal, Iron Ore,Fire.Clay and Band Stone or Limo might be taken—say six or eight feet in all— without striking one blow that wan not directly productive.
