THE THEE DETIOCRACYI The editor of the Salem (Ohio) Hu:sewed Journal devotes considerable space In his paper of Wednesday last to a review of oar article of linguist 18, on the “Freesoil Movement." We propose to notice a few of his strictures. Their tone is, upon the whole, in good spirit, and we shall endeavor to treat them with the respect they deserve. We Bald: We are bound up in nolltical compact with sinvebolders. The act which so bound as was neither theirs nor ours. Grant that they are guilty—not of originating slavery, but of cling ing to It, cherishing it, and laboring to extend it, still this does not absolve us from the per. formance of the duties which, under the federal compact, we owe to them, nor them from the dories which they owe to us. A Christian wife is not exonerated from the dirties of that relation by the unchristian, or even vicious, character of her husband; but if this conduct at length be. tomes intolerable, her last sad alternative is to seek and obtain a divorce. Have we, in our marriage relation with slaveholding States, reached that !maul point which warrants us to de.lit a dissolution of the bond? There are very few who will say so." To this the editor of the Homestead Journal replies: In noticing the above extract, we grant that the guilt of the elineholder does nut absolve us from the performance of the Dumas under the federal compact, we owe to them, nor them from the duties which-they owe to ns; but we deny emphatically that any law, custom or stream et mee, can make it our duty to owe them pro!re tarn or countenanee in their wicked trafSe in the billies and souls of men. All - we owe them, we are willing to pay, and we think we owe it to them and their slaves to do all in our power to sever their relations; and if we cannot do it one way, we will try another. But the editor speaks of a Christian wife and her duties! I wonder if be thinks the North the wife of the South, or thtt liberty is the wife of slavery!!! I deny that err are in any way wedded to slavery. excepting by or voluntary ants atid_wills, and I know that 1 .vn rot so wedded, and that I owe the slave poser nothing tint execration, loathing', and uncompromising hostility and opposition.. This is disingeotions to the last degree. We tin/ not say slavery, but the .slaveliolding Sirup," to whom we are bound in political com m. et Amongst all the relations and duties .arising mot of that compact it appear, that the editor can see nothing but 'Luny. Let him east his eye book to the sentence in the above extract beginning, "All we owe them," ho., and he Must admit that the eentimant ti utterly sub vo mire of our political fabric. It is expressive of his readiaess, to sunder the bond which con- Zll2ts us with thou States. The utterance of th it perilous sentence seems to bare rendered hi a mad; for the remainder of the paragraph is core rant, as unworthy of its author as it is of redly.. We see in it only the sad effects of the pressure of one all.absorbing ides upon an ardent aid active mind, converting, as it does, reason in madness, and making a naturally ra-in and sympathetic heart a fountain Of fiendish malig nity. We had asked the Fmcsoll men why they sought to elect President of the United States if' it was their intention to dissolve the Union, as they certainly would do were they to arrive at power and act upon the principle of the fore- gcing extract. To this the editor 'makes the fallowing calm and sensible reply, which is sin gularly in contrast with the quotation already made: ' , We seek to cleat a President, because we be lieve the Constitution of the United Buttes anti alarm, and that by proper exertion's end Wl ement we can divorce the Federal eoventment fr,Jm slavery, which ie an unjust illegarand un brly union. whoso affspring mast all be Illegitt mete. "But the editor asks bow we expeitli , ive in Li ainn with men with whom we refuse' hold pc [ideal fellowship. We answer, that with the &elastic institutions of the different State., we have nothing to do politically, only morally; and ii the southern States continue slave States, it wa be against the strongest moral and religious is luence the Free Democracy can wield. Poll the Federal Government has nothing to d, with slavery in the States where it already cl,ets, and it would be as absurd for Congress t., make laws abolishing or establishing slavery in the States, as it would for Ohio to enact the M Line Liquor law for the State of Pennsylvania Tao Free Democracy aim to have Congress abo ii•h claeery in the. District of Columbia, end 'menses else she has the authority, and then to rt fuse ever after to reeeiro into thellnion slave territory, or to prohibit it from ever entering ter. territories of this country." .There are some things in this to which we e rent accent, but let them peas., The meet of however, in mood doctrine ;... - And if•this is the D..clarstion of Principles of a Freesoil party, or the Free Democracy se they now call them - :Tee, why eats they not set with the Whig party f the North, add even some of than of the tiolthl• for nine-tenth, of them have for yeani I , co contending for the very things siedfled in lint sentence, and they would hare contend ed succesefully too had they not been weakened by-the desertion of thousands wro a broke off in ,rlitr to form another party organization based clan the single principle of oppeeition to slavery. The first sail fruits of this division in tie ruts of those wh4rere battileg . agahist the farther extes . Tipn of slavery was the defeat of Mr. Clay and thk+otioti of Mr. Polk, which we regard ed, =lgen very plarible wound, too; u a de- MEMI prospect of carrying the vote of Ohio through their areiatahoe. Then are some other points disarmed by the tionteettedJotumal which •e ehall notice again. General Einott'a new plank in the Whig plat form la a most gracious boon to the European, who, being tired of despotisms; approaches our shores to enroll himself with Republicanism and become a free-man. He only propoeen a year's drudgery in the army or navy a paesport to citi zenship. 'Pretty places to learn the duties of civil life and of a citiven! And if we should have no wan for the next bolt a centory, and needed no recruits for the army or navy, would not anott's naturalisation mill stand stook etill —Post This le a poor attempt at misrepresentation. General Scott proposed to make no alteration in the naturalization laws as at present existing; nor dote the Post say he does, but there is an insinuation to that effect in the last sentence of the above extract. The suggestion of General Scott is a good one. He proposes that if any foreigner, upon lila ar rival on our shores in time of war, 'hall enter the army or navy and serve the country one year In actual service in either one or the other, he shall, upon his discharge, be invested with all the rights and privileges of a citizen, in addition to the pay which he would receive in common with the' citizen soldier. Bat ehould he not dome to enter the service, then the door to citi zenship is open to him as at present under the naturalization lawn. The fling which the Post makes at thatserrice, as "pretty places to learn the duties of civil lift and of a citizen," will be properly appreciated by those who have risked their Rees In defence of their country. We suppose that Judge Woodward's senti ments upon tho subject of foreigners, are more in accordance with the Cowl of the Pont.— Thin is certainly a very reasonable Inference, in asmuch as that gentleman is the democratic can didate for the highest office to . be filled thin fall in Pennsylvalia. Webetn's position. There is yet hope for the general land bill, but its fate depends rather upon parliamen tary management than any attachment to prin. ciple in the Senate. There is a majority for it, tut the western Senators are exerting all their skill to prevent it, being taken tip. The vote in the Howe on debt:l.We Arkansas land grant has satisfied them that they will hove to wait only till next erasion to got sll they want with out conceding anything In the shape of equiv.. louts to the East. Fortunately the Arkansan donation was not as I. euppoeed a Senate bill, and it hos been cropped in that brunch, by the vigilance of our friends. The Wheeling bridge bill was attached to the annual post office approprivioue in the Senate Dad the amendment will of course be concurred in by the House. In my view of the case the making the bridge a poet route does not with draw the structure from the jnrisdictiou of the. Supreme Court, does not abate the unistance, and dote not in any manner affect the rights or relative position of the parties. How abetted is the presumption that the adoption of a work by Congress, for a given purpose, con legalize a nuisance. SappOse a . person should erect a hoagie in such a Monition in Wheeling no to oh. etroct travel and bosine.ts on the main street of the city, is it the opinion of any of her lawyera that the hiring of it by the federal government fora root office, 'could deprive the city authorl• ties of the right to remove it. The caeca are precisely parallel. The navigation of the Ohio river is a right common to the people of the whole Union, and Wheeling has no more right to throw obstacles in the way of its enjoyment than the individual would have to crop up apub lie street of Wheeling. If Congress, under the pretence of providing means for carrying the malls, can legalize this nuisance, then it might authorise the building of a bridge which should admit of the nonage of no river craft whatever, and make Wheeling the head of navigation.— This poet route pretence won't do. The prams Court will; in February next, insist upon the execution of its decree. The bill for protecting lives sad property on eteamboate hoe finally passed. Gee. If, upon this bailie, the above cities will not contribute the paltry sum of 250,- 000 dollars, to secure the outlay in their favor of nearly ten times that gum, they certainly do net deserve the advantages to result from it. We think the Springfield, Mount Vernon and I Prtteburgh Company ors fully justified in de riming to proceed with their road, except eyes the oonditinns proposed We understand that the efficient Preebtent of this r,lnpntty, Netteral Anthony, is about to visit Philadelphia for the purpose of securing the sum expected from that I city. Its have no doubt he will meet with the reception hie project deserver. It has the pub lic confidence, and can, upon a proper basis, command money in this city. The company can raise In New York six dollare for every one re quired of Philadelphia Such being the fact, lee belle,* that the latter will not be slow to avail herself of the capital of her rivet, to build up a project which must be tributary to ben Any other policy would indicate a degree of stu pidity, and an utter inattentieri to her best in terests, that we will not believe of Philadelphia till we ees it. Were her enterprise equal tc her real strength, a number af,prejecla absolutely eseenNal to the maintenance of her petition now calling for aid, would not be treated with en much coolness and neglect as she is showing to ward them. She should do something, if only to conciliate the good will of those portions of the west upon which she has been accustomed, and must depend fur support." This paragraph merits attention in two or . three respects. It acknowledges the value of the improvement to Philadelphia, states the fact that New York capital will largely aid in its con struction, nod administers a wholesome rebuke I to that languid, cold, enervated spirit with which enterprises, immediately involving its progress ar•d prosperity, are so often met in this city. We hope it will hays some effect in arousing as to a sense of local pride and duty, and In spur ting the community to more earnest, prompt, ac tive co-operation in all movements, wherever or- Ignoatiug, that may, in any degree, contribute to our advantage. The President of the "Springfield, Mount Ver. non and Pittsburgh R►itrond Company," who is now here, endeavoring to obtain from private eources a anbecription of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars of stook, recently submitted the claims of the undertaking to the Board of Di motors of the Penneyteams Central road. That body, at a meeting held on the 25th ult., coati doted the subject, and adopted the following pre• amble and resolution& "Whereas, in the opinion of this Board, the Rtilroad about to be made from Springfield, 0 , to connect with the Pennaylvanio and Ohio rood at Its moot sootherly point, near Loudonville, is a moot important link between this city and Cin cinnati, by way of Pittsburgh imd the Penney'. vanis and Ohio Railroad, and by which a moot valuable trade will be secured to the city of Phi• ladelphia, that otherwise would be directed to New York. Atid.whereas, when all of the 'Astral parts of this great line, now in progress, shell be com pleted, it will st once afford to the traveller a dualrable through route, of easy grade* and curvatures, by way of Pittsburgh, and will bring this oily in direct communication with the dottlbely populated and highly productive central and southern parts of Ohio and it numerous connections: And whereas, to secure the completion of this work and prevent Its taking a.:direetion to the New York routes, a subscription of $lOO,OOO is required in Philadelphia: Therefore: Resolved, That this Board regard with great satisfaction the efforts now meting to raise this amount, sod they confidently recommend to the citizens of Philadelphia, and ePplcially those who are Stockholders in this road, to give suck aid to the Springfield, Mount Vernon and Pitts burgh Railroads as will secure the early com pletion of this congiction. Although, In consequence of certain existing ressons of private polioy, the Pennsylvania R olkaed Company are, for the present, prevent ed from lending any corporate assistance to the, enterprise in question, their acknowledgment of Ito importance to Philadelphia is • corona re commendation, and those who are etOokholdere In the road are asoured that their interest', es far es they are vested in the one line, would be directly promoted by extending neocossery aid to secure the western connection proposed. This fact, honorer, is self-evident, and needs no ar gument from as to enforce it Prosident,C.
