Prie nt Blesses Murdoch, Mc- Knight. Speer, of Boliinson townotdp. McCabe, Miller. fictively, Kelly, Lloyd, McQuewan, Mc- Kelvey. Ilordoch, Yount., King, aid Elnod irreina John Morlnch, jE, fre to the committee on printing, reported that the, bad timed live hun dred tickets of invitation ko be printed. The carrespoding; secretary proceeded to till up a. number, to be directed to. the editors, re' porters and clergymen of this and other cities. Letters acknowledgieg tho receipt of letters of invitation, were read from the following agricul tural implement manufacturers: Wheeler,Melick & Co., of Albany, Emory & Co., of Albany, A. P. Allen & C0.,0f New York, and Obediataineeey, of Baltimore. Oo motion - a Robt. McKnight, Esq., it wan resolved to send Invitationx to the editors of the agora& McCake, l'resident Agricultural Society: Mesa Sta—ln thy August number of the Her tieulturst there is a oommunication from William Stokes, Philadelphia, announcing the fact of a "iltencessful battle against the Caroalio." He adopted the plan reoommended by Mr. Ludlow, of Now York, which was a whitewash composed of lime andoulphur, thrown on to the tree with a common tin garden pomp. Taking a hint from-the I=oam:tree, I have used lime and sul phur this million with entire tramcar. As the preparation and mode of application differs somewhat from mine, I have been requested to communicate the facts end results to you. To a half a peek of lime, thoroughly air-slack 'ed, was added, half a pounCof floe. sulphur, end the two well mixed. One week after the bloom had fallen, commencing early in the mottling, while the dew was hoariest en the tree., from an ordinary step•ladder, the preparation was easily thrown with the hand on to the trees. It being very light - and dusty, and - chrism princi pally from the windward side, pervaded the whole tree, and wherever there was dew adhered wall; this was repented at intervals of three or. four dope, dew permitting, for five times, and afterwards, whenever the rain washed it off, until the whole number of applications amounted to about ten. How much less would have answered the purpose, I have no means of judging, but having lost the entire crop last sea son,' determined to give it a thorough trial this, and filling, to cut down the - trees as not only worthless for fruit, but being prolific breeders of - the cumuli*, injurious to - surrounding fruit trees. Very nanny of the plums were stung be fore the preparation was used, but I could not perceive that any.were stung afterwards. Slimy that were wounded by stinging were healed at once without any Injury to the plum. Of the potency of the remedy, I think there can be no doubt. Last year the meat of these trees did tot ripen their fruit sufficiently to tell what va riety they were of. • New every tree on which It was used is loaded with fruit, while trees on the - • same grounds, so situated that it could not be - mood conveniently, either dry or wet, some have not a single plum, and 6090 very large and line /trees, which apparently had bushels before the "Grand Turk" commenred his attack, will not ripen a dozen plums. If the knots, so destruc tive to this tree, is the nintt cf an insect, pro bably the curnallo, the same preparation will doubtless be found an effectual remedy. Mr. Stokes asks If excess of lime Is the dose of some of his plume falling off. No such re sult followed here. It will be observed that in my experiments there were ten applications of pure limo and sulphur, continued until the fruit was nearly ripe and only three in his. I should also mention that, not having enough &tenanted lime, the latter applications were of lime freshly slackened, with jut sufficient water to slacken it, leaving it dry and dusty, and used as soon as cool enough, without injeu7 to either foliage or fruit. • Mr. Stokes suggests that a green color ing be added to the wash, to avoid the unsightly appearance which lime or white wash would 'have in some localities. I know of no vegetable coloring matter _that would resist lime, nor any mineral color that would be entirely harmlers. There are frequently trees, however, so close -to the dwelling, or to paths, that it would not be desirable to use lime or white waeh,l on account of its tracking. As an experiment, I would eog gest the use of lime andeedphur, water, made by adding to the above quantity of lime and sul phur water four gallons boiling water,:land al - lowing it to etsnd for several hours, or until quite clear. • With the dry preparation an ordinary used tree can be dusted in less than five minutes,_ while the plan of shaking the Insect on to a sheet is every lengthy and tedious one, which must be pursued regularly twice a day; and for a very long time, oryina may be sure of failure. Strikiog the tree with a mallet has-been recom mended; but with any inalletyet Invented, it ap pears to me. with more injury to the tree than to the lasso,. It Is well known that the Plum crop has been nearly an entire failure for several years, and many cultivators despairing of success (equiva lint to tae trouble, ) against the ravages of this great enemy have, during the past season, cut down trees of the moot valuable variety.. I am aware that this has been a very favora ble season for the plum. I am cautioned against being too sanguine of success, but it Leo cheap au oxpe_riment, and Med with so little trouble so sucoessful when used;on the same grounds, Where other plans remitted in entire failure and 'lts success in other parts of the country, will be o sufficient iodneemeut for me, and I trust for many °there, to give it 'a fair trial the next sea eon. -Respectfally, - .ka. John linnioch, Jr., of Peebles Township, said that as the season for sowing , wheat was rapidly . &di - unclog, an article should, be written on the subject by some gentleman able to do It justice. In this locality there were theta formations, and to cash formation some peculiar variety of wheat - was adapted.. te wen therefore smatter of much Importance ;to; the reamer to know which was Most suitable to the sell of which his farm was composed. After some discussion, a committee connoting of Mare. Shively, Kelly and Young WWI aP . pointed to prepare a report on,the subject, for presentation at the next:meeting. - - Mr. Josiah King was appointed on the Com-. muter of Arrangements fir the Pair, during the temperary absence of Mr. King.
