THE GMAT NORTH tYZB2.—Northern Illinois and Wisconsin formed bat a few years ago an althost unbroken wilderness; now they nob the homes of a numerous and enterprising popula tion, with large and flourishing cities, extensive commerce, railroadis, steamers and every ap pearance of the most advanced ciiifization. In deed, it seems that when men go there, their minds become fitted, by expansion, - to the mag nificent region they inhabit. They become as similated, as it were, to the largeness, boldness. grandenr of Nature as they then find It, and ' this begets - large ideas and boldness of enter prise. Think of a railroad of a thousand miles traversing a State, the history of which, as a civilized community, does not date beyond the memory of a child! The Chicago Daily Tribune of Saturday has a notice of an eleCtiort of officers of the Illinois and Wisconsin Railroad, followed by some re marks from which we take a short extract: The Illinois and Wiliest:sin Railroad, is the South-eastern connection of the Rook River Valley Union Railroad, and the two Roods arc one In fact, though prosecuted udder different charters. Among other stock purchased, part of which has already been delivered, the remainder to-be delivered this fall in eeaeon to be forwarded through the lakes, are seven locomotives, one of which is now at Fond do Lac and the other en route for this city, to bo need on the Illinois and Wisconsin Rend. The whole of the road from Food do Lac to the Illinois State line (about one hundred and seven miles) is under oceitract.with Bexilley It C0.,-who are to (10 all the work, and furnish nil the materiels except the rails, chair. and spikes for a single track, at an average cost of $7.500 per mile,—the whole estimated one: of the road without furniture is $12,500 per mile —and with furniture $17,500 per mile. In the whole length of the line there is no grade ex ceeding 80 feet to the Milo. The gauge adopted by the Company is six feet, Wet in all proba bility will be the general gauge in Wisconsin, excepting the Milwaukie and Miesiselppi Rail road.
