Ile did not sag. gest this omission because the article wee demi achy heterodox, but because ho thought that it would be more satisfactory to them. Ile would pee, however, to the basin for thy sake of union. The Rev. Mr. Nave., of the Reformed Pres byterian Church, had nlrealr explained the rel. _ sons of bin being there, and alit° of his not de simcg to take a prominent part in their delibe rations. These reasons bat not originated in any feeling of dislike to the union movement,or an aversion to its consummation between the breth ren of the various churches. If he stated these reasons, however, they might be a barrier in the way, rather than en aid to their carer, and be would be sorry to Ray or do anything that would in the slightest degree, mar the harmony of their protieedings. He had a word to say, however, . regarding his own personal consistency, and was slimy that he wits compelled, from the statement of Mr. Douglass, to refer to it. lie stated that 1 bad pledged myself to bring the basis before our Synod. and that 1 did not do-se. The her - deu of this inconsistency, however, if eonsiatere. ay it was, did not fall • exclosively on him, Mr. Dunham and ethers should have brought it be foreghe synod. A very exciting discussion had or cup led the attention -of the Synod for thieral days, at the close of which its members were • warn out, and wished to return home. He did • not think that that was a suitable time to bring ,it forward. Again he. had not a printed copy, nor had he at that time seen it as to whole.— The subject of onion had, however, not been en ' tirely overlooked, Dr. Guthrie had bthught the matter incidentally before the court, and there was a brief discusaion upon it, though they tad I no time to enter into-details. Ile sincerely wish ed that there would he no obstacle between their brethern of the Associate, or Associate Reform ed- Church, for his heart-yearned for- onion.— He thanked them for their courtesy and felt that whatever might be the result of that Cenvention, it iwould tend to the glory of God, and the peace of the church. , lie treated that his own chrirch • would unanimously, he able to agree to4be union which would he made between the Associate and the Assotiate Reformed Churehes. . , . . After having given a history of the movement, Mr. 11- stated that he thought the Associate Re fended Church would fled no dificulty in adopt ingthe !pith , . They both regarded the enures-i sion of faith, as the foundation of their system' of religion. Dr. Beveridge, principal of the the ologicatkeminary connected with the Associate Church, had stated that all 'their professions were embodied in the Confession of Faith. Fie believed this something wits necessary by way of testimony, but the brethern should only look: on this, as a State of transition. lie saw. no actu al difference between the Churches, and thought that all which 'appeared to be differenoes, arose from•mutual misunderstandings, and from not having frequently met together. He was 'in' favor of Mr. Kerr's propossition relative to amendment. . . . .._ The Bev. mOtilinit 13ANKS, of the . Associate church, was hardly well enough to !meat, but rose to express hie satisfaction and delight at the manner in which their business was pro gressing. lie hod listened with .intense in terest to the general ranisrks made upon the basis and had been unfeignedly glad to see so few objections made to it. The difference yes not so mneli their elm ' timents, sain their forms'of expression. There seemed to be a difference of opinion an to wheth er the basis, as separated from the Confession of Faith, founded new' doctrines, or was . only emu , cidatorypf them. 'Mr. B. cited the opinions of Doctor Beveridge and Doctor Anderson, in sup port of his position. The basis, then, woe only explanatory of the Confession when the lat ter had been perverted or denied by those•pro teasing to receive it. To this principle, thk Ae• sociate iteformeo Church wee ready to subscribe, although individuals might differ concerning it. Me.' B. pointed 'out very clearly the principles which both held in common. It was folly to expect on entire unanimity, for that was the ;highest point of Christian attainment, lout he really thought that the proposed . union was shoot to be consummated, and that at their next meeting, or goon after, they would unite on one standard. The Rei. Joule Ego, of the Associate Ito formed Church, had Cory little to esy on the subject. It wee well known that be had regard 7 ad the onion as of the utmost importance, yet:it less but proper that they should fully under derstand each other and knew exactly how much forbearance on either side would be necessary to consulomateit Mr. E. He rose and said: I have had the pleasure, brethren, of attending most of the conventions which have been held from the first, whose object it woo to pro mote a union between any of the Hieformea Churches. Every one of these meeting. was convened in a spirit of kindness and good feel ing, and I believe that the effects prodoced by them U. have been goo'. The brethren of dif ferent churches hove thus been brought togeth er. They have united in conference, and in a frequent interchange of views II was thus found, to the astonistimene of many, that we. think and speak the same things, and remarks Ihave trequentiy been made In my beating by those who attended these conventions, that there was no greater difference of opinion between them than between brethren in the same congregation. On one occasion, as it was thought that they en tertained different vials, it was proposed that we sisuld hare a fall interchange of views, and I read from a copy of that work, which Doctor Rodgers has quoted hero to day (the Ants of the Associate Reformed Church). When a question was propounded to me, I read from it, without adding any words of my own, and the fathers in our sister church said that they were very much surprised and gratified, for that they were pre cisely the views entertained by them. Formerly there unhappily appeared to be a disposition in these churches toistand aloof from each other, and I do. not wonder that the flee of Christain love, grew cold, if it was not estin guished. Such a course is like separating the burning matter on the hearth, the heat rind flames diminish, but our present coarse brings it ; together again, and the Samos combined In crease. We have met, Peayed and interchanged opinions, and come to the ,conebasion that we entertain the same views. WE are one in mat. tern of faith and church government. It is true that there are particular modes of phrase ology employed in our several Acts which dib fcr a little, but we enterain the same great truths and were it not that we have been alien in affec tion, from the disposition which formerly pre vailed, we would long since have been organical Kith these few observations; as regards the basis, 1 wish td-eay that it is not perfect in every particular, but do we expect to see anything produced by man absolutely perfect. The ques tion it, is it as good a basis as we could expect, and one on which our sister churches can unite. I believe that it Is, and that cordial preparations have been made to unite upon it. Now while I make these remarks, I wish it distinctly un derstood that I am in favor of having the basis modified in thosaparticulars to which the broth ro i have already refered. I will sot consume more of your time, for I believe that the hearts of the children are no inclined to their fathers, 'Sakti:lose at the fathers to the children, that they are willing to unite.
