I On the abstract question of Slavery there is, between them and Ise, no controversy. -Like them we regeird it cs a huge wrong to one por- don of our population, and fraught with guilt and danger to all the rest; a cause of strife and division among the States, and a deep and deem ing disgrace to the nation. But it 11 bound up in our political system. It Is legalised in the States where it exists, and recognised in terms by. ore Federal Compact But - two ways remain open for its nbolitton—one by the voluntary action of the States in which it exists; the ether by resolution. We 1,011 that there is at present little hope of the Ent.; but are we prepared to adopt the second`. Hopeless so the case may now appear—obsti nately as the people of the South etmg to their winked and injurious inatitation—we would yet rather rely upon the power of Oath, the advar.c. kg spirit of the ago, and the 01-enbdning 'Paw nice of Christianity, to exert their energies upon the salads of slaveholders, and thus bring them to a settee of the guilt of slavery, and induce them to it, than to resort to violent men- We are bound up in political Compact with slarcholders. The act which so bound no was neither theirs nor ours. Grant that they are guilty—not of originating slavery, but of cling ing to it, cherinbireg it, and Laboring to extend it, still this does not absolve us from the perform ance of the dullest-which, coder the federal Som . pact, we owe to them, nor them from the duties which they owe to as. To them the coun try is indebted for the , fugitive slave law; and far the abandoment of the Wi'mot Proviso. Such abstrac t lions betray a mind sadly impaired. Let an be fairly understood. Between no and our Free Soil friends Share is no dispute es to the eheracterof eitivery as it exists in the United States. The only difference between no is, how Shall it be dealt with. They say, if wo understnod them aright, that they will bB no further political communion with elaveholders; to other words, they will not rots for such. NVe snewer, that this Is tantamount to a die • racroberment of the confederacy; because it is Impossible to continue in . union with people with whooi we refuse political communion. They !Withdraw from the two great parties of the country, because those parties are, as they allege, implicated in the sin of elavety. To this, on - reply is, that the parts must necessarily rotate of the character of the whole: as the entire nation Is unhappily involved in the guilt of slavery, by that clause of rho Constitution which enjoins the delivery of fagitites, the per tien of the nation must of necessity partake, mere or less, of the eautc character. It followr, therefore, that the came principle which would dis.oeniber the Whig party for this canne, , would .abrogate the Constitution, and dissolve the Caton. The bottle of slavery, If fought In such a manner as to give any hoped succor and re• li.:f• to tbo slave, must be fought •in the Union, end in one of the great parties Into which the whole Union is divided, Any other course must either result in nothing, or in a separation, of the free from the slaveholding sections of the Union, leaving the slaves still It bondage; unless, to the calamities of political dissolution, it is proposed to add the. still greater calamities which would attend any attempt at forcible ripatiam. Soppose, for argument's sake, that they should dritre to do this great evil, that good• might come, wa tell our Free Soil friends that they poonot do it. The vast majority of the Ameri can people will Dever ; consent to break up this confederacy for that, or pay such purpose. Nor do we believe that one in twenty of the gentle men who met in .Convention in this city last week, have any such -design; hot we beg of them to look dispassionately at the inevitable tendency of their movement. We reiterate the great truth, that, !situated os we are as a nation, to refine political communion with slaveholdere is to dissolve the Union, the moment the party to refueling 'hail become a majority. For these reasons we tsoneelve it to be our duty to remain where snare-4o the Union, in the Whig party, and to direct Our efforts ;to deliver both, if possible, from the dominion and curse of slavery; for if slavery is ever to be abolished peaceably, we are in the right position to make our influence end efforts tell to that effect; but l ir, on the other hand, le is the will of God that l it name to a violent end, we desire to be free from the terrible responsibility of precipitating that consummationt It is no fearful as it is lon pious for man to usurp the divine prerogative of Vengeance.
