The Free Colored Convention, of Maryland,
held for the purpose of deliberating whether to
go to Liberia, continued its ieesion today. Al
though a good deal of ilLteeling was manifested
by those opposed, the large number of policemen
present prevented any riot. _
The committee appointed for thal purpose re
ported a preamble end a long aeries of resolu
tions setting forth platform principles for the
convention. They declare all men born free and
equal, and entitled to the pursuit of happiness;
acknowledge the efforts of their white friends
for their elevation; but declare that these efforts
have been unavailing; that their condition both
socially and politically is worse now than twenty
years ago. In the face of a constantly increas
ing emigration and growing prejudices against
them they declare that there Is no present pros
pect of their being placed on a footing of equality
in this country, and they pronounce in favor of
emigration to the only place where they can en
joy republican institutions and the right of gov
erning themselves.
The resolutions do not counsel all to emigrate,
bat recommend the colored people to accustom
themselves to the idea of emigration; as, sooner
or later, their removal must take place.
The resolutions wero debated at great length.
and after adopting the two first, the Convention
adjourned until tomorrow.
