Al though a good deal of ilLteeling was manifested by those opposed, the large number of policemen present prevented any riot. _ The committee appointed for thal purpose re ported a preamble end a long aeries of resolu tions setting forth platform principles for the convention. They declare all men born free and equal, and entitled to the pursuit of happiness; acknowledge the efforts of their white friends for their elevation; but declare that these efforts have been unavailing; that their condition both socially and politically is worse now than twenty years ago. In the face of a constantly increas ing emigration and growing prejudices against them they declare that there Is no present pros pect of their being placed on a footing of equality in this country, and they pronounce in favor of emigration to the only place where they can en joy republican institutions and the right of gov erning themselves.
