What we saw were on a smaltbranh of a cherry tree; but Mr. M'Cleeter, whose let ter we subjeM, says they hare only preyed upon his apple trete, and that his pear trees were not distfirbed. Mr. 91. did not intend his letter for publication; but as ho boa stated the case well, end the subject is an interesting one, he will ex cuse us for publishing it. To the Editor of the Plittlnogh Gazette. Dixie Six —I the in some of your !Me papers mention made of a " New enemy to trees," "New species of Csterpillar," &e, which you deseribe, and for the destruction cf which you recommend the application of dry sand. Allow roe if you please, to state in a few words,.what I have seen at - home here In Find lay township, in tegard to this matter. I WSS absent from home, at Allegheny city, tot about ten days, at the latter part of May lett. I came home on Saturday the 29th. When I came home my attention was directed to the (apple) orchard on the premises, the individual telling me, that the frost had been so severe, in my absence as to kill all the leaves on coy spoilt trees, and sure enough the trees had that appearance; but I thought there mutt be some other cause, so I went and examined, and found worms or cater pillars such as you mention having seen on the branches of tho pear and cherry trees, only that they were fully an inch long; in all other res pects they were such as you mention, and they . were scattered over the apple trees by the ten , thousand, devouring the leaves. They ate all the soft part of the loaves, leaving the fibre on ly, whir:, soon shriveled up and fell off. They continued their depredations for about a week longer, by which time the trees were for the most port entirely naked, as much so as at mid winter. The worms did not diet orb the young apples, but the stripping the trees of their leaves, checked for a time the flow of sap to the bran ches, and consequently the fruit wilted and was entirely lost. I did not think of watching their "transformation into a perfect state,' until It was almost too late, but from the large numbers of small yellow millers which I saw in the or chard after the disappearance of the worths, I concluded that they would make deposits, for a next year's supply; and if they should do so, I am confident that there aro enough of them to pollute Allegheny county, and Washington Into the bargain, especially as their ravages were not stall confined to my.orohaid alone, although it fared the worst of any that I saw. These worms also followed the business of spinning threads like, the spider, only that the threads were pretty much isolated and extended in every possible direction, many of them to the ground. As to the trees—l thought them dead for certain; but after some time they put out a new crop of leaves, which are now of a richer green, and look More thriving than the first. Respectfully Douro, Anon= M'CLESITR. li For the Putztairgh Gazette `COLONIZATION Rev. 11 R. GURT.T.T, ono of the ablest and moat devoted friend - S - of African Colenization, whose namo le interwoven with that of the la mented Aehmun inihe early history of Liberia, being upon a visit to the western portion of our State, advantage was taken of his presence by the supporters of the cause, to hold meetings, and have the light of that gentleman's experi ence shed upon this interesting subject. On Monday, 19th inst., a meeting was boa io the Borough of New Brighten, at which B. R. Ilnulford, Esq., presided.. After addresses from Mr. Gurley and others, a eeries , of resolutions, approbatory of the scheme of Colonization, and at the bill introduced into the House of Repro eentatives by Mr. Stanley, of N. C., were intro: dined. But some members of the Liberty par ry being present, end intimating a desire to ral ly their orators, and have the resolutions fully discnased, their consideration was postponed, and the meeting adjourned to Wednesday, 21st inst. On Taeaday evening a meeting wan held in the Presbyterian Church of Bridgewater. lion. Daniel Agnew was caged to the Chair, and Wm. Henry, Esq., appointed Secretary. After a most eloquent expoaltion of the trials and triumphs of the colonists, and the claime of the Col So .ciety upon us as a ultiorn from Mr. Gurley. and remarks from E P. Oliphant, Esq., and others, tesolutiorie endorsing the policy and practicabil; ity of Colonization were unanimously adopted On the following evening, a meeting was held in New Brighton, purenant to adjournment. The resolutions offered on the preceding even ing, were taken up - for-conitiffelaSon, and the disoussiwn was opened by Mr. Gurley, who in an eloqdeot, yet condensed argument of a? half hour's iteration, proved most conclusively, that Colonization was, as it purported to be. a scheme of oomprehensive benevolence. Malt contem plated, and, unless interrupted by some unto, seen contingency, would accomplish the highest benefit to the American people, to our African population both missile and . free, and to the na tions of Africa. That it would result in benefit to the American people, inasmuch asP opened a door by which without agitation, or Ha:fiat:al disouasion, the African element in our popula tion, and even slasery itself, might eventually be remounts- - That it would ameliorate the con dition of our free black population by removing them from a land of prejudice and proecription, where the majority of them must remain the Menials of the white men. free only in name, to coo where there is no bar of Color, or ruinous competition.of white labor, and where on a ter tile ground, in a hoepitable climate, and under a republican government, they might enjoy eve ry privilege physical. and moral, which is the natural right of mankind. That it would bene fit the elseee, by increasing the facilities for emancipation, as hundreds are liberated upon condition of emigration to Liberia, whe would otherwise spend tire/ lives in eerfdom. And Natty that it would civilize and christianize the idolatrous and barbarouo tribes of Africa, who mill remain on their native emit, and effectually extirpate their greatest scourge. the slave-trade, by positive regulatlop, example, and influence. . To this it was replied by Messrs. Robineon,of Salem, and - MoElhealy, of Darlington, that the .scheme of Colonization, though benevolent in principle, tended to fatter slavery, and that the Society was organized and mainly eupported with such intent. To prove this they adduced the fact that many of its original members were alaveholdere, and that tnedate lion. Henry Clay last President of the Society, was at his death, end always had been a foe to emancipation. That it fostered slavery, by removing tee ad- Verse influence of thelitte blacks, and by inter poeing [the reporter could not understand how) screen between the conscience and the .ein of the elaveholder, who, in their opinion ehoald al ways be haunted by a consciousness of theenor mity of his crime. That 'it moreover, had its origin in an unnatural and unholy prejudice of (Mier, which should rather be quelled, than ac knowledged and ministered to. Mr. Gurley corrected a atatement se to the origin of the Society, proving that the scheme had originated with Northerners, and nottelave holders. Dr. Clark, of New Brighton, triumphantly vindicated the memory of Henry Clay, allowing -that be had made his entry into the political world u an advocate, and had been through life a consistent friend of gradual and oonstitution al emancipation. " Xbe vote was then taken upon the resolutions, which were refrard by a small majority. In jars• (Ice to the citizens of New Brighton, it should be ended that, though the diectssion began and was.carried on for soma hours berme a mended audience, in consequence of the lateness of the hour to which it was protracted, there were 'tout a score of persons present at the patting of the question to the meeting, and that the moiety of three were .Spiritcral Rftppere,' •Wo. man's Bights Men,' and disciples of the other standard humbugs of the age. it was a 'mores of gratification, also, that after adjournment, gems' persons who up to that time had been consistent members of the Abolition Party, came forward and professed themerelves perfectly con. vinoedef the superior policy and philanthropy of Colonization. Mr. Gurley leaves soon for the Eaet, having earned the respect of all who have heard - his ad dresser, and the congratulations and kind wish es of every friend of African Colonization.
