The engineers are still &A:tinkly engaged In
their labors on the various routem of this road.
Fromhere to Hittannint the preliminary ser
vers have been completed. One line wan ran on
the east bank of the river, one by the west, and
one by way of Leechburgh. We understand
that the distance from the starting paint In the
Ninth Ward of thin city to Elttantdrig, by both
the river routes. - is forty two miles—there being
but 800 feet difference in favor of the 'western
side. The route by way of Leechburgh is some
12 miles longer. The ground on all is very fa •
vornble.
Above Kittanning various routes present them.
pelves, all of which either have been or will be
carefully examined. Several of them are found
to be more favorable than was atitieip►ted. For
instance, we are informed that the hill between
the month of the V s -honing and Bed Bank creek
at Bethlehem, can hi eurmounted at a grade
not exceeding 46 feet to the mile. This was re
garded aa the moat difficult place on the whole
route. From Bethlehem to Olean there la no
difficulty. Another excellent route, we are told,
hsa beta found by continuing...up the river to
Catfish, some 16 or 18 miles above Blahoning,.
and there etriking off through the centre of Cra- -
, don county. This route runs through the heart
-of a rich populous region; but whether it is as
short an the route which leaves the river at the
month of the 41 shook% further surveys can on
ly determine. Be that as it may, it is now cer
tain that an excellent route can be had through
out the entire distance.
Mtutou Roffirore, ESq., the Chief Engineer,
in now engaged In procuring rights of way on
the several lines between thin city and Kittan
ning, preparatory to making a final selection of
the route, and putting the work under contract.
Bo nearly balanced are the linen on the two sides

people along the respective routes will also have
o material Influence upon the question. This
wilt beget a generous rivalry amongst them,
which cannot but °have a beneficial Influence
upon the enterprise and upon the successful
parties in the competition at least. The Leech

that the item has yet to pass the ordeal of the

of responsibility. However the thing Is doubt
less settled: -
Mr. Edgerton, of Ohlo,Thadens Stevens, Major
Richardson, of Illinois, Mr,lEvans, of Md., and
other noble spirits, did themselves immortal ho
nor by advocating and scouring the postage of •
small amendment for paying the poor overworked
census olerks for extra work done /10C December.
Mr. Houston, chairman of the Committee of
Ways and Means, opposed it with his usual tre.;.
hemenee, not denying, however, that the work
had been done out of office hours, and not assert
ing that it had been paid for. But the House
almost unanimously decided that he was running
economy into parsimony, and parsimony into
the:ground, andthat the clerks should bo paid the
extra,.
Mr. Howe demanded .$35,000 additional for
the custom house at Pittahurgh, which be obtain
ed after delivering a plausible speech upon the
manner, in which the former appropriation has
been expended. I had some oonsaieritions !scru
ples about the appropriation for these interior
custom houses two years ago, but in this great
country It is perhaps well to dot the surface
over with marks of the paternal care of thq gov
ernment. Ido not suppose a large amount of
duties is (igneous! at Pittsburgh, but that you
ought to have a substantial building to hold
Uncle Sam's courts in, and for other purpoeo of
the federal government, there Is no kind of coutit.
Mr. Hosea did well, therefore, to rake down
that little thirty five thoueand. Neat year the
finishing on' and decoration will require another
cosy sum or lea or fifteen thousand, which will
be granted with equsll g6od humor. Humphrey
Marehailgot 540.000 for liouieville,beatingPitts
burgh by five thousand. That was the sum
required fur the vaults to keep the money in.
Having settled the other amendments the bill
was reported to the House sad will be passed
tomorrow morning It must then go through a
committee of conference, and will become a law
in six or seven mouths after It should have been
disposed of.
It is said that Ron. John P. Kennedy, of Bald
moio has been invited td take charge of the na
vy department during the remainder of Fill-
More's administration, Mr. Kennedy served In
Congress with the President, and heartily and
effectively co-operated with him in all the leading
measures of the famous 27th Congress. He Is •
gentleman of distingulsbed Literary attainments,
and the author of several admirable works of
fiction, besides others of • graver cut. It was
said, at the time, fist he wrote the well known
declaration, signed by s large portion of the
Whigs in Congress!, unveiling the character and
designs of John Tyler, which forced him to exe
cute at onoe the purpose he was contemplating
of rushing into the booem of the Democracy. At
the foimation of (len. Taylor's Cabinet, it was
proposed to brim in Mr. Kennedy either as Sec
retary of the Navy or Attorney Oeneral. Ido
not know the circumstances which caused the
failure of the arransement, but probably it was
Mr. Kennedy's own disinclination, at that time, to
give op his private pursuits. Joure.
