WAIIIIINGTCYS, April 21. • The Presidential canvass, as yet confined to the competition of lading men for the nomina tion of their respective parties, has received a 'somewhat more decided aspect by the action of the Whig caucus last night. Let opponents ay what they please, the proceedings of that meeting were marked by a spirit of harmonious co•opera. tion, which is rarely found in assemblages of that kind. It is aid that seven members left when the meeting imstained the Chair in ruling out all extraneous lesuee. • Among them were Humphrey Marshall, of Kentucky; Outlaw, North Carolina; Judge Morn, of Louisiana; and Mr. 11 illiams, of Teatime. Rumor, which loves la amuse itself and its Ratner. with large stories, has choun to represent all who left before the close of the cantos, as deserter, and insurgents against the recognized organisation of the party. This view is by no means correct. All knew that the vote eustaining the Chair was in feet decisive of the notion of the meeting, and indeed the prin cipal latter determined, and the only one-of importance, that of appointing a time and place for the convention, was settled gamest immedi ately after. There was no motive for their all renialning to the clan of the proneedlogs, and in ,point of fact quite a number of Northern and Southern members, known to be perfectly con tent with the tonne adopted, left au hour and a half before the adjournment. It is not true that Mr. Gentry was among the seceders, nor can the opponents of the Whig cense derive the slightest field and comfort" trout any at or declaration of hie at the meeting, or before or after it. There are no doollt a very few nominal Whip In Con greu, as there are out of it, who are very anxi ous for a pretext to go over to the camp.of the enemy. Cover nor Jones of Tponesses was present, and cordi ally acipleeces in the molt, but did not vote on the qtaestion whether the compromise questions should be brought io or not. The necessity for any action whatever on the port of Whip in Congress, relative to the sub j rota which hare engaged their attention for some few 'reeks pat, arose from the omission of the that National Convvation .to appoint the usual 'tending Executive Committee, to whom le con fided jurisdiction over these mature of mere sr. apparent. The Item of $218,000, as en additional ap propriation for the Collins line of steamers, has been placed In the deficiency bill by the finance committee of theBthate.
