due to candor to state that the Whig members

it was allowable, because convenient, that they

blatant duly came to hand, informing me that
"attention has been painfully directed to a let
ter-from Rev. H. H. Spalding, Late missionary
of the American Board to the Oregon Indians, in
which he etates that !pen the arrival of
the Superintendent last June, a treaty was form
ed with the tribes of the Middle Dietrietx, so
ar
tiole of which provides •that no American (i.e.,
Protestant) Missionary, shall ever again enter
their country."
The treaties which have recently teen negoti
ated, not having bean sent up to MU, I tied no
knowledge of their contents, and therefore im
mediately referred your letter to the Commis
eloper of Indian Affairs, for infermlition on the
subject to which it alludes. I have just receiv
ed a letter from him, in which he says, am
reluctant to believe that lltr. Spalding has made
the statement imputed to him, es it is entirely
destitute of truth. There have he en thirteen
treaties negotiated with the Indians in Oregon
by the Superintendent, the first dated August &
the lest November 6, 1851. AII exempt the loot,
heart he signature of Mr. Spalding :himself, who
wan associated with the Superintendent in their
negotiation. In no one of the ethnic utiiiiber is
there any provinion whatever, that given the
slightest semblance of truth to Mr. Ilmthiti,7,'s
statement"
As this mistake of Mr. Spalding's si , ems t.
have been tpropogated to the prejudice of th,
Administration, I will thank you if you wil
contradict it in your porter.
1 Your obedient servant, MiLLasoLuoits.
We suppose that the following article from
the National Intelligenoer refers to the '•ucw
light" exhibited in that city last week: •
Self-Generating Gas. —We have motto some in
quiries respecting this new material tor produc
ing light, and have obtained information which,
if it shall be in any degree justified by the . ex
periments to be made upon it, describes the ar
ticle to be one of the most valuable that has flf
late been given to the world. It is the
ieeeon
•tion of Mr. Ephraim Howe. of New York, who
having fleet patented it, has disposed of his right
for the whole United States to Mr. E. W. Mill,
of this city. When made for use it is a fluid,
but become. converted by the action of the. tamp
in which it is burnt into an intlamable gas, ra
fording a strong et clear and soft e.ceed
ingly calculated for churches, hotels, halls, and
rooms for public exhibitions, as well as for pri
vate boners and individual use, reading, writing
.swing, Ste. It is reprettented to us as poesess
ing the high qmslity of perfect harmlessness, not
being subject to explosions, as in the case with
etmphene and oil. It can he told at about sixty
cents per gallon, a price about one-third the come
of the ordinary cool gas, and far below that of
the usual oils and horning fluids. A 'single jet
of light from this gas is said to equal three or
four jets of the coal gas of the manufactories.
Hut we shall not recount further the many al
leged merits of this invention, or discovery,
whichever it might have been, contenting our
selves with apprising the render thst it is Mr
Hall's intention to give a fair specimen of his
gas this evening at Thontan'n Noel, which ail ,
be lighted eep with the pelf-generating in place
of tier C3s from the city gasometer. Let all who
foel interested in this matter call •..I see foe
