GREAT BRITAIN The two great principles which for ages have been .struggling for the mastery, the absolutist and the republican, - or in other words despot ism and freedom, are rapidly emerging from this mired state in which they had long exist ed, and becoming more clearly defined. The first is now nearly triumphant over all the con tinent of Enropc, while the last finds its only resting place on that side of the Atlantic in Great Britain. That great nation, although its I government is Monarchical, has in its constitu ' tion a large infusion of the republican princi ' ple, the House of Commons, the popular branch of the Legislature, being the supreme power in the State. France was really n despotism dur ing the poistence of the late republic, so En gland is virtually a republic under a very dif ferent form of government. We freely admit that there are many things in the British form of government, the very opposite of republi can; but they hare-been unfortunately engraft od upon it, and bound up iu their great system, as slavery was engrafted upon and bound np in our system r but these things do not inval idate the great fact that both are free govern- MOIL, Oa the continent despotism is ndrancing, and stealing away from the people whet little lib erty they once enjoyed, so in Great Britain the opposite principle has long been steadily ad vancing. This disparity between Great Britain and her ancient continental allies has at length become so great, so decided, that they now stand towards ono another in the attitude ut antagonists and this antagonism is likely, crc long, to bring them into open and deadly con flict Prom her insular position and immense naval strength it might be supposed that Great Britain could not be vastquishell by all Europe in arum against her. ritM, may be, is true: " . It is not probable that Bassin. Austria and France com• bintal could etlect a landing upon the shores of England; hut abs is extreniely vulnerable in her immense commerce, and in her distant colo nies. (rut off the one and invade the other, and Great Britain would quickly sink down under an intolerable load of poverty and debt That the British government is becoming somewhat alarmed is evident from the language of the London Times quoted by us on Saturday, and that an alliance with the United States is her only hope of safety from a conspiracy of the Despots, is equally evident. Bound. to gether, as the two nations are by a common tie •of deseent, language, laws and religion, and sympathizing as they do in a common love of re ligious and civil freedom, an alliance would not Only be perfectly natural and proper, but would be eminently popular in both countries, as well as politic and just. Some bigoted, sordid and prejudiced minds would oppose it, but they would weigh but lightly against the large sym• pathies of the nation. The BeJferd Iny.rrr opposes theapentment of lion. A. J. Oats, no Charge to Iteumark., because, among other teaeons, he voted against the rugitiv,e Slave Law. We hare no intention or disposition to take any pat in the quarrel about this appointment, and we do not know 'what foundation there is in justice for the violent opposition waged against Mr. tick, but if there are no better reasons for his rejection than the one above mentioned, he is certainly the very man to do honor to our nation abroad. A vote against that disgraceful low, althougii itinight not, like the Mantle of charity, • cover a multi tude of tias,'lrquld at least lead as to look . wittia lenient eye on some alight failings. Consider ing the pressure bronght to bear upon the mem bers, and the overshadowing power of slavery in Congress, itwas a right worthy act to beard the lion in his den, and to refuse to make the free North an active participant in the crime of slavery. We commend M. Ogle for the very oafor which he is condemned by oar Bedford brother. It will be remembered to his praise as long LIS free thoughts and righteous principles influence the hearts of mankind. PIII:SIITTLIIIIIN COLONY IN Clews. —We on. derstand that a company of persons belonging to the Presbyterian Church is about to found a colony in Oregon. Iter J. A. Hanna, goes out as Pastor, and among the members enrolled, who now number Sixty persons, are a physi cian, nine farmers, ten teachers, two mercantile clerks, a professional gardener, a wool mann tacturer„searpenter; a machinist, a sadler, etc. A good many of them have wives and children. The overland route is tacit on, and the party is to rendezvous at Cincinnati, on the lath of March, and at St Josephson the 15th of April.— Persons wishing to join the emigranting party I can report themselves to S. Harrison Thomp non, the Corresponding Secretary, at Hanover, PATIDIT I ierrevrloti ft iksin Stnrr hum rhilynalr article of manufacture is now adver tised in our column's, and a specimen of it can be seen at our blfice. It is indeed a most beau - tfal article; with a smoother surface, and a hoer gloss, and a richer color than any Russia sheet iron we lore ever seen. It is manufictured by the patentee, Mr. IV. Levees Wood, at the W'Keesport Iron Works, a few mile:, above this city, on the Monongahela Riser. It must take the place of the foreign article, which if we get into a war with Russia in promotion of a great and just principle, as some men fear we will, ion matter of some importance. the eau make our own Russia sheet iron, that is certain. fly reference to our advertising colaians it will be seen that a lecture wilFtie delivered thin evening at Washington Hall 17 Dr. H. D. O'llei ly; subject Oliver Goldsmith Thu object of this lecture is to obtain assistance for a family in state of almost absolute destitution.' At this in clement season when some of our fellow creatures are really 'stiffeing for the necessaries of life it is n4sLeincerely to be hoped that the charitable 'aid humane among us will not fall to attend. Noce MIIRAD.—The resolution of Idr. Thin Was lost on a vote of yeas 71; nays 111. This we consider a very hopeful indication. It is a larger vote than we expected at this early dap or the contest for a now policy. Although it is an effort io promote a great and just_prin ciple, yet wo must - not expect minds which have not! been turned previously to the col:ilea/pia- tionof national duties in reference to dm 1301111- tritA of Europe, toyield at once to the force of 1111N:tient or the appeals of eloquenoe. It in the' wing side, flowerer. it will stcactili in while the' others will decrease'. It is fOruided on large and just principles—on Chris tianity itself, which bounds man's duties to man only by mankind in the aggregate, and which overleips in the scheme of its globous ,benevolence the narrow boundaries of States and, kingdoms, or even Continents—and it must, therefore, flourish until it writes its blessings on all hearts, and in its final results, destroys" all wail and strifes betwe6n peoples, because it will have destroyed all injustice and oppression. APTI-1103P17711 . ARGUMEATA.—A writer in the last Pittsburgh Catholic uses the following lan gasge in relation' to Koseuth, and those who .extend to him a hearty welcome. We take only one extract from a column and a half of similar stuff: • Ito' smith has curiously worked himself into the foremost place in the ranks of all the bed spirits of. the times, be has become the leader.
