o'clock, on Wednesday night, in Hand street, ;

thirty dollars, aud u doe hill for one humlikal
more. It seen,' that lie had observed, in the
early part of the evening, a number of - peruons
following him. and endeavored 1.1 -.hate them off,
but ...old nut.
They came up to him, at last, and commenced
a conversation, which ended in two of them
seizing him by the arms, while a third struck
him on the head with a colt, and a fourth stood
by with a large knife in his band. The rascals:
however. had grappled with a strong man, and
he shook them off, upon which the fellow with
the knife made a stab at him, which slightly cut
his hand. He then clo , ed with his opponent and
wrenched the knife from his-grasp. but was at
last overpowered and robbed
Mr. Pettigrew, Clerk of the Mayor, happened
to hear of the occurrence, and went and wakened
his honor, Captain. Guthrie. Some of the day
police were summoned, and a consultation held.
Mr. O'Neil arm not acquainted - with any of his
assailants, bat eircum.tances were elicited which
clansed a number of young men to be suspected,
eight of whom were azi-esttol next morning.
On being confronted with Mr. O'Neil. he
cognized four, and the others appearing not to
have been present, were discharged. John Lutz,
Jerry Lutz, Wm. Cavanagh. and Michael Mur
phy, were committed for further examination:
O'Neil testifies - positively that Cavanagh id
tacked him with a knife. and that Jerry struck
him. John Late has already seMetiout one

This arrest will probably put en end to the
highway robberies which have been of late:so
frequent in oar city, as developments will doubt

of many others. The greatest credit is due to
Capt. Guthrie, Mr. Pettigrew, end the Officers
who effected the-arrest. for the ingenuity which
they displayed in ferreting out• the rascals.
P. S. Since the above was written, we learn
that_two other men, accused of highway robbery,
have been arrested, but have not been sa yet, ,
examined. A large colt, the lead in .which
weighs over u pound, has likewise been' found
near the spot where Mr. O'Neil was knocked

Pa IVATE EAAMINATIONS -We observe that %WWI
of our contemporaries object to the course of the
Mayor in examining perams accused of u.ny
grave crime, in private, but we cannot help_
thinking that this is the correct method of con:
ducting business.
Persons are ftwlnently brought before his
honor, who are innocent, and that innocence be

of it, the mortification of a public examination?
Ceitainly the feelings of the innocent are best
consulted by the exclusion, Of oil but the °Mears
of Justice.
Again suppose that the person accused of
crime is really guilty, the object of the Mayor
in, of course, to prevail on ^him by legal means,
to inform on 1.113 confederates if he has nay, or
to confers bin guilt, if he was not. In the first
cane be would not like to become that abhorred
thing—an informer, in the pretence of fifty or
a hundred witntetses of his infamy, but set hint
face to face with those whose interest he knows
it into keep the matter quiet, yet who know his
guilt, and he will at leas be uninfluenced fur
the moment by the force of that public opinion
which even the moot harden...l dem& In the

Sear V.iewsrma's Day.—The doors of the
Post Office sill doubtless be blocked up this
morning by crowds of anxious inquirers Mier
uValeatines." but we think that this custom is
new becoming more honored in the broach than
the observance. The feelings of large numbers
of our citizens have been of late icor, vi out

Itsn Burry:H.—A great deal of butter is sold
in our markets for fresh, which really is manu
factured from old, rancid batter, and yet which
is tao,l, up in such 11 way, as to deceive 'persons
who are not very goad judges. We love heard
from very good authority,: that rancid roll butter,
Which costs the buyers but twelve and a half
cents a pound, is bought in large quantities from
our grocery stores; andcarried out to the roan
try by the "semi (ostlers, but whole, cheats,"
who make'n business of carrying an this mean
occupation. After they have finished their reg
ular churning, they: break up the old butter in
the buttermilk, mingled with a little saltpetre,
and churn it thoroughly. Then they again make
it up, and next day it is sold in the markef'for
fresh print butter, at twenty-five or thirty-one
cents a pound, generally deceiving all but the
most experienced, although when taken home
and used, the.fraud-becomes evident.
We learr. (rpm a store keeper in Allegheny
that he has srilliwithin a few days past, fourteen
lmndred pounds of old butter to persons who
caned it out' of town, no doubt to manufacture
it. Our citizens should be careful to' buy their
butter from some one with whom they are ac
quainted, and then, if deceived, tho remedy is
in their own hands.
ATTIJrIED ➢ttaacnatze.—Wo hear of no leas
then three attempted burglaries, which took
place in Tunnel street, at about the hour of 12
on Tuesday night.
In one instance the burgler, had obtained
admittance through the coal grating, but
ninking a :slight noise in the cellar, they awa
kenedthe inmates of the house and were obliged
to fly. In another case a young lad was re
turning from his work at a glass house in the
neighborhood, and his mother, a widow lady had
left the door unlocked in order that he might got

he perceived two men going up stairs, and shout
