They came up to him, at last, and commenced a conversation, which ended in two of them seizing him by the arms, while a third struck him on the head with a colt, and a fourth stood by with a large knife in his band. The rascals: however. had grappled with a strong man, and he shook them off, upon which the fellow with the knife made a stab at him, which slightly cut his hand. He then clo , ed with his opponent and wrenched the knife from his-grasp. but was at last overpowered and robbed Mr. Pettigrew, Clerk of the Mayor, happened to hear of the occurrence, and went and wakened his honor, Captain. Guthrie. Some of the day police were summoned, and a consultation held. Mr. O'Neil arm not acquainted - with any of his assailants, bat eircum.tances were elicited which clansed a number of young men to be suspected, eight of whom were azi-esttol next morning. On being confronted with Mr. O'Neil. he cognized four, and the others appearing not to have been present, were discharged. John Lutz, Jerry Lutz, Wm. Cavanagh. and Michael Mur phy, were committed for further examination: O'Neil testifies - positively that Cavanagh id tacked him with a knife. and that Jerry struck him. We love heard from very good authority,: that rancid roll butter, Which costs the buyers but twelve and a half cents a pound, is bought in large quantities from our grocery stores; andcarried out to the roan try by the "semi (ostlers, but whole, cheats," who make'n business of carrying an this mean occupation. After they have finished their reg ular churning, they: break up the old butter in the buttermilk, mingled with a little saltpetre, and churn it thoroughly. Then they again make it up, and next day it is sold in the markef'for fresh print butter, at twenty-five or thirty-one cents a pound, generally deceiving all but the most experienced, although when taken home and used, the.fraud-becomes evident.
