The Democracy celebrated the memorable
eighth of Tannery, atTammany 1101, with a ball
and supper. Letters from Messrs Casa, Dicken

read, apologizing for their non-compliance with
invitations to attend, st the end of each letter a
large . 'proportion of the company, which was
colnpozed of "Old Hunkers," would persist in
giving 'three groans' for Martin Van Duren,
notwithstanding the presence of his son, 'Prince
John; who bore it very patiently, considering
all things, only venturing to express a hope that
the gentlemen would •not make themselves]
hoarse!

The dilTmulty between Forrest and Willis. so
often before the public. has again been revived
to the gratification of the quid nun., and ambi
tion, new:Tapere. It appears from a card is
sued by the latter gentian., who seems deter
mined to keep his troubles before the public,
that Mr. Forreqt has threatened him with vio
lence, in the street, and also at the Opera. on
Tuesday night. If Mr. Forrest has threatened
these things, as Mr. Willis alleges, he is unques
tionably very much to blame: bat the public is
not the tribunal to resort to for justice or pi,otec.
When a man receives an insult amounting to
legal offence, he should appeal to the law for
redrers, not - the newspapers. Mr. Willis' diffi
culty with Mr. Forrest is of purely a personal
character, and his endeavors to enlist the sym
pathies of the public in his behalf, is decidedly
in bad taste—Mr. Willis winds np his card by
saying, -that although the term for which Mr.
Forrest was 'bound over to keep the peace,' has
just expired, yet the above mentioneiFunprovo
hod hostilities are steps very clone upon crimes
punished by the penitentiary—out of which, it
in important to Mrs. Forrest, that Mr. Eorrest
be kept, if possible, till his accusations against
her bare had a fair bearing, and her innocenoe
a fair defence.
'The annual report presented to the Common
Council by the Commissioner of Streets and
lamps, shows that during the past year 700 gas
lamps hare been erected, which, with those pre
viously erected, rook° an aggregate of 5,570.
There were also 730 oil posts set, and there are
now 6,732, making the whole number of public
lamps 12,032, which will * be greatly increased
during the present year. The gas lamps afford
double the light obtained from oil, and the Com
missioner says, “if our streets were properly
' lighted with gas, there would be more safety for
persons and property than there is at present,
even if one third of the police force were dispen
sed with, which would be a saving to the city of
over $120.600 annually."

MORE HASTE THE WORSE SPEED.

Dr. Dewey's lecture on Saturday evening was
upon the Law of Progress, which he thought
was slowness, calmness and moderation. lie
said in these times every body and every thing
seemed to be in a hurry, going at railway speed.
A railway train should he the emblem on our
shield, with the motto •Hurrah This haste
he did not. like. Ile saw the evil effecis of it in
all directions. Young women were in too much
haste to be brought out, and boys were in too ,
much haste to assume the position of men. In
our !schools the children were pushed throgoh
their etudiea too rapidly, and too much is at
tempted to be done. Ile had heard a teacher
use the characteristic eaprenaiun that his pupils
should be Tot through' such and inch studies.
This, he Wild, wan a modern practice. We put
-children through philosophy, put them through
history, put them through Euclid. He bad no
