"- v tSfrp'iitf iwSjSS THE SGRANTON TKIBUNE-SATURDAY, JANUARY 4, 1902 ' $ Church and Sunday-Schoo o , F nhout twenty-seven and onc- lmlf niltllon of rellRlotta com intinlcuntH In the United Slates, nearly nix millions arc Metho dists, divided between seventeen different, hodlett bearing the Mcthodlnt iininc. Taken together, they make up the most numerous Protestant denom ination In this country, the Baptists coining next with ubout four and a half millions Blithered Into thirteen dis tinct branches. The Koman Catholics number between eight niid nine mil lions, according to statistics prepared by Protestant compilers, though they themselves lay claim to a much larger following. Methodism was third among our Protestant denominations In the number of communicants In 1800, but It now occupies the first place. These facts wo obtain from the "Methodist Year Book" for 1002, nn an nual publication which pays attention to the branch designated especially as the Methodist Episcopal church, or the largest of the different Methodist com munions, with an aggregate member ship approaching three millions. The annual expenditures of this body are tfatween twenty-three and twenty-four million dollars. The number of Its churches Is about twenty-seven thous and, of Us preachers between twelve and thirteen thousand. The state In which Its membership Is largest Is Ohio, 297,fi31. with these states close behind: New York, 2S7,ii4G, and Penn sylvania, 2S:!,lfil. The growth of American Methodism, Impelled especially by the great relig ious revivals of the early part of the Inst century, has been one of the most remarkable in the history of religious development. In New York, In 17(50, "a good woman called a few Metho dists to their duty in a rigging loft." The whole number In the American colonics was only live thousand: now the membership In nil the branches Is nearly six millions. This Year Book opens with an elo quent tribute to President MeKinley, In which we are told that "his election to the chief magistracy of the nation conferred on the Methodist Episcopal church, for the first time in the his tory of the government, the exalted honor of being represented In that high illlce by one of its beloved communi cants." This will probably surprise most people, because usually in the de scriptions of our presidents, Lincoln, Johnson, Grant and Hayes are also set Jovvn 'as Methodists, but. apparently, none of them was a communicant. SERVICES IN THE VARIOUS CHURCHES The people of the Second Presby terian church of this city have a treat in store for them tomorrow when the flew Dr. M. W. Stryker will preach morning and evening. Dr. Stryker is among the very forefront of American preachers. Those who had the priv ilege of hearing his masterly presen tation of Paul's Epistle to the Galla tions in the Green nidge Presbyterian i-hurch some years ago will not soon forget the wonderful manner in which lie expounded the1 scriptures for he s.poke as one having authority. The doctor is not only a great preacher but also one of the finest af-ts-r dinner speokers In this country. He is always in such demand that he is an exceedingly difilcult man to se cure. The New England society have tried to get him for some years but so fnr without success. This year they will make another attempt and If they succeed Scrantonlans will have the pleasure of listening to one of the best speeches even the Xew England so ciety has over heard. Hamilton college, of which he is president, was founded as a new school college of the Presby terians aftPi" the split between the two rings of the church. Commencing with Sunday evening the Pastor Hev. J. It. Austin will con duet in Ash Street M. E. church a series of Evangelistic meetings. The holy man khould be succeded by the Holy Ghent (John JilvsSO), the incarnate, visible Di vine person by the spiritual, Invisible Divine per son. That promise, made by Jesus, was also made by Ihe Kallier (Joel It! 2) centuries be fore.
