,THE SCRANTON TRIBUNE-THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1900. B SECOND DAY OF , THE COUNTY FAIR THE WIND DID SOME DAMAOE ABOUT THE GROUNDS. Also Intcrferred with the Balloon Ascension nnd the Day Fireworks. There Is a Fine Exhibit In All De partments of the Fair Featuro of the Afternoon Was the Racing In the Three Minute and 2.27 Class. Winners of the Events. Vrem FUH CorrfMondcnt. Wallsvlllo, Sept. 12.-Old Boreas made a visit to the Laclcnwanna coun ty fair grounds last night, and did not stop to go around to the front entrance and pay admission. Ho swooped In side the high board fence and played tag with the canvas tents nnd side shows pitched nil mound the main hall. The top was taken oft the merry-go-round. The Brltlsh-Boer war exhibition nnd kindred entertain ments, nnd the showmen who had en gaged space Inside the hall, were pleased with themselves for their fore sight. The wind also made a change neces sary In the official programme, as the belloon nscenslon could not ho made with any degree of safety. The day light fireworks woie also abandoned after one trial, and these two features of the fair are held over for tomor row. During the day a large number of visitors passed between the two ticket boxes at the entrance to the giound.s, and when the sun finally t merged fiom the heavy clouds nt nbout noon the enclosure was bright with color and the sreen hillsides surrounding the track, were covered with bugglos.fatm wagons and bussps from vlllnges for miles around. Somo of the fanners' conveyances boro crates of poultry, calves and sheep, and the fomlnlno members of their family held in their arms Jars of butter, poty of flowers or cans of home-made preserves, which they were desirous of entering. MATTER OP PRIDE. Although the premiums are not very large, on account of the many classes open to exhibitors, the entries have filled quite well, the competitors striv ing more for the honor than for the cash. Many a farmer's helpmate will, when speaking of preserving fruits, toll of the time when her plums took first prize at the county fair. The exhibit of horses is very good, and that of cattle Is better than usual, tome very fine specimens of Jerseys, Ayrshlres. Guernseys and polled hclf exs and yearlings being displayed. Although the exhibits In sheep and swine are small In number, they are larger than they were last year, and of good quality. The poultry department of the ex hibit Is filled up. nnd Deputy Warden George Pryor, who Is the judge of the feathered beauties, will have a lnige number to make, his selection of prize winners from. Almost every variety of standard breeds of rhlckons nro on view, nnd ducks, geese, pigeons and guinea fowl lend n farmllko air to the west side of the main hall. During the day the various side Dhows made a determined effort to re cuperate from the effects of the wind, and about 3 o'clock everything wns l tinning. Tomorrow and Friday, the two big days of the fair, will see c cry thing straightened out and all the de partments of the exhibition going smoothly. NEVER MISSED ONE. The farmer who has not missed a county fair, "b'gosli lor forty year," and his buxom wife, are heie, and with them the tiny grandchild who is mak ing his debut nt the time-honored mecca and who gaws with dilated eyes at the wonderful wooden horses on the merry-go-round. Resides this., aie the grown-up, unmarried, .oung daughters, whose "steady company" escorts her around. Tills is a festival week for "the man with (he hoe," and he tries his best to make the best of It. Down on the fiist floor of the exhibi tion building seems to bo the merriest section of the whole fair. There nro the "movlntr nletiirou." . i- r..i entertainment of its kind, nnd operated oy i. v. carpenter, of Clark's, Summit. A photograph of Congressman Conncll thrown on the seieen olways brings oui appiause. uppc.slte to the entrance of this show is the "rapid sketch art ist," whose "gift of gnb" easily makes him the king of the funniukers here, and who has an audience almost con stantly. A piano nnd organ exhibit Is made by J. N. Mclxell, of Scranton, and the audience that is entertained all day free by Miss Smith, of Spilngville, on both theso instruments, as well as by her violin playing, is large and varied. Besides these, there are phonographs, mutoscopes and ice cream tables on the first floor, and it was the principal gathering place until the horse races began. Visitors to the fair grounds need have no nppreliensions of going hungry, for tho management have se cured the services of a good caterer. The dining hall is located under tho Judge's stand and is large, light and free from dust. THE RACES.
