Mtxke Up of D., L. & W. Board.
In nn Interview published In the
morning pnpers with II. II. Vreeland,
president of tho Metropolitan Street
Hallway, ho stated: "Our experience
in providing underground electric trac
tion for tho Klfty-nlnth and Twenty
third Btreets cronstown lines demon
strated that tho removal and replace
ment ot the pipe obstructions along
the avenues was so costly as to ren
der underground crosstown building
almost prohibitive, and wo nre, In con
sequence, making extensive experi
ments with traction systems, which
will obviate this great outlay, ns, for
Instance, on the Twenty-eighth and
Twenty-ninth streets lines, with com
pressed nlr, and on the Thirty-fourth
street line, where we ore preparing to
test the storage battery system.
"It would hae been quite as reason
able to have said wo were going to
abandon elect! lolly when we began ex
periments with air power, as to say
now we are to abandon nlr power be
cause we undei tnke to experiment
with the storage battery. So far from
abandoning the use of tilr power, we
are equipping the Twenty-eighth nnd
Twenty-ninth streets roads with new
heavy rails, and are awaiting an
entire new equipment of ears with a
different type of motor from those now
In use, In which all the defects experi
mentally developed In the llrst lot nre
eliminated. These cars will be deliv

Contractors' Property Destroyed.
Burke Brothers, tho contractors, who
are engaged In building n retaining
wall between Foster and Nicholson
over a creek which crosses the land
to be used by the Delaware, Lacka
wanna nnd Western Railroad company
In erecting u branch to Cailuccl's stone
quarry, suffered the loss of about $500
by damages to their pile driver and
other materials last Friday night.
It seems that the owners of the land
on which the railroad will be run ob
ject to the branch anil applied for nn
Injunction In the courts of Susquehan
na county, which was refused by tho
presiding judge.
To vent their spite on the company
and contractors the opposition forces
destroyed the pile driver and cut up
several hundred feet of rope Into use
less pieces and otherwise damaged
property belonging to Burke Brothers.
The matter has been reported to the
Lackawanna officials anil an Investiga
tion will be made. Several arrests are
likely to follow.
