There were many con tractu to bo filled during 1899 at prices materially less than market value. The aggregate value of the entire produc tion of black plate, tinned and untln r.ed, was $12,155,803. This is an Increase In the produc tion of black plate over 189S of about 7 per cent., and In the tinned produc tion of the black plato works of over 3') per cent. This largely Increased tinned pro duction Involved a largely Increased force of working people. The entire number of woiklng eople employed in ISPS producing 7 per cent, less black plato and turning out 30 per cent, less tinned production was 5,030, while the number employed in 1899 was 8,832. Tho aggregate wages paid out in 1898 to tho wot king people was $2,934,954, while the aggregate paid out In 1S99 was 3.976.79G. The average dally wage for all employed, skilled and unskilled. In 1S99, in tho manufacture of bla"k p'ate, Including the women and boys in the tinning departments, was $1.S4. The average days of employment were 241. The capacity of the Pennsylvania black plate mills for 3U0 days of oper ation during the year Is sufficient to turn out a production of 607,800,000 pounds of black plate and 500,400,000 pounds of tinned plate. This is an In crease In tho past five years In the production of black plate in Pennsyl vania of 252 per cent., and an in ci ease In the tinned production of the black plate works for tho same time of 490 per cent.
