TILE SCRANTON TRIBUNE-VT3DNESD AY, MAY 23, 1900. 9 V LACKAWANNA COUNTY. CARBONMLE. SCHOOL BOARD'S DOINGS. Principal Bryden's Term Extended One Yonr May Causo Trouble. The school board has extended the tr-rm of l'rlnclpnl Hiytlen, of the High school, one jent nnd has thereby ere nted soniowhut of a sensation. He was elected for one year and ns a majority of the member believe the best Inter ests of the school demand lit reten tion, tho' look advantaRo of the brief lemalndcr of their term to secure his position by adopting tt resolution au thorlzlntr n supplementary contract ex tending his time. Those who voted for It tire Mfs-rs. Holan, Kerwln, Dtmock nnd Swlpeit. Messrs. Moon and Hughes, who voted nKalr.st, contend that the action Is ille gal, hut Its supporters say they did not make the move without havlwr good lpeal ndvlcc. Of course it has been understood, since Professor Hoekenborry's election to the board, that as soon as the body reorganized In .Tune he would make an effort to place himself In his old posi tion tthat of principal. It Is Jutt this which the otttpolnp members desire to prevent, nnd they point to this year's smooth nnd "ffectlvo woiklns of the Hltfh school as pood nnd suillclent rea son for their apparent usutp.itlon of the new board's prerogative. Prof. Bryden's position In the event of an adverse board will be a tiylng one. In fact, It will doubtless bo In the new board's power It being In pos session of the school property to pie vent his teaching. Whether it would Bo to this extreme and theicby place the district on the defensHo l.i a su t for salary or violation of contract Is another question. FURNISHING TRINITY.
