-pijB'i. THE SCRANTON TRIBUNE-FRIDAY, MAY 4, 1900. LIVE NEWS OF THE RAILROAD WORLD THAT PROPOSED NEW HOAD TO TIDE WATER, V i Connolly Wallace ; 6tatement with Reference to It Made by E. Ij. Fuller Before the An thracite Coal Operators Telephones Instead of Telegraph to Bo Used by the Erie Company In Signalling in Connection with Block System. Make-up of the D., L. & W. Bonrd for Today. v s SCRANTON'S SHOPPING CENTER. -.ww : At the nieetiriR of the anthracite coal operatois In New York Wednesday 12. U Fuller, of this city, made the fol lowing ntutement with reference to the Delaware Valley nnd KliiRUton. jall ind: "Our engineers nesuro us that they can flnlBh the work In elclit months. So far ns litlpition In Mew York state 1? roneotncil, It Is practically ended. The state board of railroad commissioners has granted our char ter, despite the violent opposition of the capitalists opposed to tis ns rcp xesentcd by Fra'nk Piatt and other persons of Influential connections. Nothing serious can come of tho F.rlc's contention that we propose to parallel their road, ns It has been shown that we parallel It only for a short dis tance, near I'ort Jorvls. "Tin Delaware Valley and Kingston will tun from tho Hurison liver to lacluiwuxen. Pa. From that point on to the Wyoming Valley nnd the co.il fields tlKre is still some litigation pending In the Pennsylvania courts, but we look for a favorable settlement of It all within thirty days. At Haw ley, Pa., our plans contemplate a con nection with tho Krle and Wyoming Valley road, which Is the property of the Pennsylvania Coal company, an In terest that Is ftlondly to our enter prise, hut It is leased to the Erie road at present. "Between Hawley and Lackawaxen 1 a stretch of sixteen miles. This Is covered by the Hawley and Kastern railroad. If wo have any further trouble because of tho Krle lease I will take It on myself to build a new road connecting Hawley and Lacka waxen and the projected system. "Assuming that we have to build that stretch of sixteen miles, ninety seven miles or now road Is all that needs to be built to bring us down to tidewater. That means that we will be able to deliver coal at tidewater as cheaply or more cheaply than our competitors arc now delivering It at Perth Amboy. It means competition and that means cheaper coal to the consumer.' Begin nt Ten O'CI&ck and last for One Hour. The last sale is at 4 o'clock and closes promptly at five. Prices during the hour are ridiculously low but it gives us a business lhat is wonderful in its propor tions, and it makes very satisfactory purchasing lor you. Be on time today, Block System Changed. Th" Krle Railroad company will, in a few days, change their system of block signaling from tclegiaphlng to telephoning, sas the Port Jcrvls fid xette. The block signal stations will bo equipped with telephones, and men placed in the stations to operate the 'phon'js Instead of the telegraphers. It is reported among railroad men that this change Is the result of the Krle to be Independent, as much as possible, of the telegraphers, who are now fciimlng an organization. A num. her of 'phones have already arrived nnd will bo put in use as rapidly as possible. A school has been In pro gress here several days. In which ap plicants have been Instructed In tho methods of operating this new system. The iages will be the same as tho pay of operators. D., L. & W. Board for Today.
