The exact sum that had been sub scribed up to yesterday afternoon Is not known, but last night $73,000 bad been promised. Subscriptions will be received tonight and tomorrow and un less the entire amount Is subscribed by noon today the mill will go to Nor folk, Va., Instead of Carbondale. SERIOUS MISTAKE. Mis. M. D. French, of Philadel phia, who Is at present residing with Mrs. W. II. Hollenback, on Copeland avenue, was the victim of a peculiar and unfortunate accident last night. Mrs. Kronen Is a canvasser and has been working In this city for somo time. 'East night she returned homo quite tired and unstrung and, as It is her usual custom, took what she thought was a bromide from a bottle which was on her bureau. Instead of bromide she discovered upon taking the draught that she had swallowed a part of a bottle of arsenic which was beside the other medicine. The dim light in the room was the cause of the error. Dr. Uallcy was dispatched for and iip.on arriving administered an antidote' that counteracted the awful effects of the poison. The patient is quite comfortable today. IT IS ASSURED. Tho new driving park on the South Side Is now an assured thing, the Trac tion company having agreed to sub scribe a turn equal to that raised by the horse men who have Interested themselves in the piojoct. The present plan Is to buy the fence enclosing Alumnla park and the buildings erect ed on the grounds by the Alumni Ath letic association and to enlarge tho present enclosure by taking in plots of ground toward the river and on tho north side of the present park. A half mile tracK will be built at once and suitable refreshment stands erected on the grounds. II. J. Hockenberry is acting for the Alumni Athletic association in the deal and the consideration for the fence and other Improvements will be a sum suf ficient to cover the debt against the association. VALUABLE HORSE KILLED. Hutcher W. II. Evans, of South Main street, lost a valuable horse yesterday afternoon which was killed jjn upper Dundaff street. The horse was one of a team that was corning from the Ice house with a load of Ice and the team became frightened at a trip of cars and dashed out on the main road, making for the central city, when one of the horses stumbled and was thrown to the ground with such force that the animal died shortly afterward. A MONSTER HOTEL. Stephen Whltmore, of Jermyn, Is planning to erect a new hotel on tho site of the Crystal Lake House, which was destroyed by fire several months ngo. The cost of the projected struc ture will exceed $30,000 nnd It will bo modernly equipped in every way. The talk of building the new hotel has re vived the rumor that an electric rail road will be built to the lake. ABOUT PEOPLE. J. All plot owners are re quested ,to be present. GLENBTJRN. About 10 o'clock yesterday morning, a man named Erhart, from Moscow, while riding a horse along the turn pike here, was seriously Injured. The animal became unmanageable and threw him off In ihe road, near tho postofflce. Me struck with such force on the back of his head that he was rendered unconscious. He was carried Into Frank Pelham's, near where the accident took place, and medical aid summoned. It was 2 o'clock before they were able to restore him to con sciousness again.
