BASE BALI. CHAT. The bojs certainly had their batting clothes on venterdav. Kervin made a fine showing In center field and batted with terrific frrcc The Delehanty family divided six hits among tho three of them jestcrdaj. Something must havo been the matter with Mc lntyre. The big fellow didn't get a lilt. It seemi to be a specialty of Dick Knox to get lilt with the ball. Ho manages to bring his form in contact with the sphere every game. Ralph bcjbold. lat year with Blchmond, who was considered the heaviest hitter In tho Atlan tl eleague, was the first American league bats man to make a home run. And the pirate was put out of the garnet Ana the mild msnnercd Kennedy, alsol That cer tainly looks as though the members of the team are of a decidedly pugnacious turn of mind. Jimmy Dean placd a great game against Wilkes-Barre yesterday at Klmlia. Four runs and three singles were 'lis batting record, and in the field he accepted eight chances. He also stole two bases. Patrick Donovan, the St. louls right fielder, Is a big favorite in rittburg as the result of his long service as captain of the Pirate. Ar rangements were made to give him a great wel come ycstcrdi)', and $200 In cash and a gold watch and chain were secured tor him by ad miring friends. In Monday's game between Rochester and Wor cester of the Eastern league, Householder, Ro chester's big first baseman .landed on the curves of Miller and Klobcdanz, the Worcester twlrlers, for a quartette of hits which counted for eleven bases. They were a single, a double and two home runs. "Doggie" Miller, the ex-National leaguer, cov ered himself with disgrace in Monday's game between Dajton and Fort Wavnc. He took exception to one of Umpire Cooke's decisions and viciously assaulted him, Ho was put out of the game and his action very much disap proved by the crowd. In the same gamo Catcher Donahue, of the Dayton team, had a great hat ting record, hitting out a single, three doubles and a home run. Don't get away from the fact that Scranton has In Mike Doherty a greater third Imeman than he is given credit for being. Wilkes-Barre Record. Bight you are. Mr. Merrill. Dohertv's work last year made him, with tho possible exception of Bill Coughlln, the crack third baseman of the Atlantic league. Ho has hit the ball hard so far, also, and everything augurs that Ills pjr ticular corner of tUe Scianton infield will be particularly well taken care of. AMATEUR BALL NOTES. THEATRICAL. "Lord Byron." It was a happy inspiration wliirli led .II Hid Louiso Johnson to telect the picturesque personality of the English pnet n9 the mitral 11, ure of a play which alms to piescnt In a series; of pictures threaded Willi historical and llteiarj Interest the manysidid pluses of Lord Ilvron'sj strange career, The public has recently' been treated In maganm literature to a number of "revivals" in historical subjects elilrly biograph ical in character. Cleat soldiers and great states men have both been put into human guise and ex hibited with dramatic effect. But it remained for Miss Johnson to select for stage purposes a character presenting i)ui!ltles not oidv martial and politic but also in unique degree sentimental a composite of characteristics luppily suited to the maintenance of the Increasing dramatic in tercst essential to the success of a stage repre. santatlon. As treated in the play prcduccd at the Ljceum theater by Mr. James Young am' compjn.v last evening, Lord Byron oifers in combination tne qualities of poet and drcimei witli those of the resourceful man of affairs. Possibilities aie re vealed which indicate that he narrowly missed becoming one of the great statesmen ,of his time; and we are led to believe that had Bjion's earlier environment been better adapted to the eultivation of his more sulstantlal endowments Instead of the mellifluous dandy, the hilt satiric, the courageous enthusiast, the libertine, half in spired bard, history would have had to iccord for him a career as gieat in constructive achieve ment as his real career was gieat in failuic. How true this picture is to fact need not concern the people of this generation It is enough to know that the Lord 11 ion of t m p av make, a characterization full ot romit.ti and di.imatli possibilities, which Mr orii. has developed with artlsUc intuition and skill Tho last appcarncc of this .vomig plajer in Scranton was in a production of "Hamlet," made four J cars ago at the age of 21. During the- in tervening years he has had the advantage of study and companionship with some ot the great actors and stage managers of the day, including an extended engagement under tho immediate supervision of the lato Augustln Daly Tho bene fit of this broadening course! of professional in struction was visible last nUlit in the gieater confidence of his workmanship and in the fine artistic sense of the value and proportion of stage detail. The audience was nude aware early in the play that it was in the presence of an artist. As the play developed from climax to climax the increasing demands upon his inter pretative skill were satisfied In each instance and the effect wrought out In tho death scene in the concluding act was one'wlilch many an older and more famous plajer might well havo en vied. In sccnlo features, costuming and tho va rious accessories, the production was among the best of the season. The Sawtelle Company. The Sawtelle Dramatic company presented "May Blossom" at the Academy of Music yester day afternoon, and "On the Hudson" last night. This afternoon the bill will be "A Daughter of the Mine," and tonight, "Daughter's Vic tory," After tonight's performance there will be a cake walk open to local amateurs only. ANOTHER STORY OF M'CULLAGH A Murder That Wa3 Not Published, but the Headlines Were Used, "An Old B-porter," in Chicago Itecord. When I applied to Joseph B. McCul lagh for a position as reporter on the Globe-Democrat, in 1885, 1 had been posted about his detestation of dudes, and wore an old suit clean, but al most threadbare. I had letters of rec ommendation from Colonel Burke, of tho Times-Democrat, and from Colo nel Doremus, of tho Dallas News, which I held In my hand, ready for his Inspection. I made my speech, rather disconcerted by tho cool, cal culating manner In which ho inspect- ed mo while doing o, and then hand ed him my "credentials." Ho glanced nt tho signatures, without reading tho contents of cither of tho lottcrs, picked up n slip of instructions and told mo to report tho murder of Joe nodedcaux, a Frenchman, who had been murdered a. few minutes before In the French quarter, and then care fully placed my beloved "papers" In his pocket, without a word of explan ation. Three hours later 1 handed him a very cnrcfully-wrltten report of tho murder, giving all of the details, which would have filled two columns, preceded by my own "scare-heads" in six sections, giving all of the principal facts in short sentences. Next morn ing I found that my report had been "killed" at tho "enacting clause," for tho report appeared in an article about two inches long, under a small head, "Foully murdered," with nil tho rest ot my "scare-heads" printed, word for word, exactly ns I hud written them, n tho body of the Item. Not a word of tho report appeared.- It was a beautiful Chtlstmas morn ing, but I will never forget my feel ings as I read that little item. I felt utterly crushed, and, It I had had my letters, Mr. McCullngh would never have seen mo again. I wandered around tho hotel corridors until time to report, when I presented myself before "Little Mnck" and asked for tho return of tho lettcip. To my un speakable ourprlse und intense de light ho gave mo an Immedlato as signment for special work, handed me a huge bundle wrapped In wrapping paper, nnd, while holding this package, tho contents of which were unknown to me, he piocccdcd to give mo In structions nnd detail nil of my fnll Ings in blunt but very lucid sentences, "Put those clothes on and report for duty in one hour." My head was ac tually ewlmmlng when I left the room. Tho package contained a complete outfit, Including shoes, shirt, under wear, collar, tie, and one of tho best flttlng suits I ever wore, tho total cost of which could not have been much less than $50. I never saw my letters again, but when I left, two years later, he wiote me tho best recommendation I ever re ceived, and was always ready to say a good word by wire, If It was tc qucsted.
