The Delaware and Southern Rail road Company Baa Aaked for a Writ, of Quo Warranto to Compel the Erie and Wyoming Valley Company to Show by What Right It Proposes to Build a Road Be tween Lackawaxen and Hawley. The Anthracite Coal Trade. ' Wednesday. April' 4, lins been fixed by Attortiey General Elkln ns the tlmo for hearjnit the application of the Del aware and Southern llullroad company against' the Erie and Wyoming Valley company lor a writ of quo warranto, requiring the latter to rliow by what light It assumes to build and opernto an additional lino between Lacka waxen and Hawley. The Delaware and Southern was chartered Nov. 20, last, to construct a line ftom a connection with the Eile at Lackawnxen to one with the Jeffer son at Hawley. It objectn to the Erie and Wyoming building another lino be tween those points because, It Is claimed, the Erie and Wyoming ex hausted the rights of Its franchise, when It completed Its lino by buying tho Pennsylvania Coal company's road between Iarkawaxen. and Hawley. It also claims thut tho transfer of the old canal to the Erlo and Wyoming was Invalid because the Cornell Steam boat company never had rights to acquire property In Pennsylvania. This Is another move to prevent tho building of the new Delaware Valley and Kingston road. The Erie and M-t-Atnlncr Innoor! in tllO Kl'lp t lift HllP which it secured from tho Pennsyl vania and If 'prevented trom building ihe new connecting link, as proposed, will have to wait nine years for tho expiration of the lease wlth-the Erl?, before it can get n connection bs twoen Lackawnxen and Hawley. The Hard Coal Trade. Despite the very fair amount of cold and stormy weather that March has brought, the anthracite market Is dull along the seaboard. The 'largo pro ducing Interests all have coal to sell at prices considerably below those sup posed to be standard, and all are try ing to keep production within limits. The pronounced fall In ocean freight i.ites Is not likely to lead to much movement of coal to the eastward as ronsumers stocked up very liberally Inst fall, and no dealers at Boston are going to tank any more coal before May 1st than is needed to supply Im mediate wants. In the West, however, the outlook is better. The demnnd has been strong enough to hold up priced. There will bo some coal on dock at Chicago. When nav igation opens the supplies nt Lake Superior ports will be cleaned up bet tev than seemed likely a month ago. Along the lower lakes and nt Inland points farther east retail buying has been of very fair volume. The mar ket for anthracite roal Is clearly not like that for bituminous, Buying de pends largely on tho weather, and when buying lags, as nt pref-ent, con cessions on prices do not bring out or ders. It Is stated that domestic sizes nri accumulating at tldewntcr points nnd egg nnd broken sizes are more of a drug than ever. Pea and buckwheat sizes continue scarce and hard to get.
