They arrived in this city yesterday and were Inspeccel at the car shops by the locil oillolals, newspaper men and seven! erllemcn Interested In their construction. The cars were built bv Harney, Smith & Co., of Dayton. Ohio, and are the finest ever turned out of that famous plant. The outside llnlsh Is In keeping with the style of all the Lackawanna's llrst class rolling stock, being painted an olive, green, with gilt lettering. On cither end vestlbulecl platforms ate built, one of which can bo used for observation. The steps are covered with traps, giving floor space the width of the car. A rubber shield can be drawn from between the casings on the rear to protect the slght-seer from the dust which follows In the wake of the train. The windows In th doors and rear frame are sufficiently large to afford a splendid view of scen ery along the line. Kachct brakes are also provided as safety appliances. IXTHMOIl OF CAIJ. Adjoining the heat ing apparatus there Is a fSerman 'silver mounted wash stand and water cooler. This apartment Is partitioned off from the main portion of the dining apart ment by mahogany-carved posts and lattice work, and heavy olive groin plush draw curtains s-eparates It from view of the diners. On either side of the main dining apartment there are live tables worked on hinges, which can be raised to allow for cleaning underneath. On the one hide twenty people can be accommo dated, four at a table, while on the other ten persons can be seated, two nt a table, Hoveled mirror are placed between the window panels. The chalts aie upholstered In leather with high backs and open sides. The cars are TO feet long over Insllls, and the Inter ior finish is entirely In mahogany. The woodwork Is artistically Inlaid with white mahogany, led satin wood, Eng lish walnut nnd tulip leaf, maKlng an h.ttmonlous and perfectly-blended col oring. The celling Is also finished In Keeping with the other decorations. The wide paneled windows are hung w Ith olive green silk curtains and above them an stationed ventilators with brass gratings. The genera tor, located on the truck, Is driven by a friction pulley from the axle, and when the car attains a speed .of twelve miles an hour an automatic switch board connects the generator with the lighting mains and storage battery This will store up energy In the bat tery sufficient to light the ear while standing still. When the speed of the car falls below twelve miles an hour the generator circuit Is automatically thrown off, leaving the battel v to light the ear. The system was sup plied by the Kectrlc Axle Light and Vower company, of New York, and was operated ostorday bv J. I. K, Duncan, from the Broadway headquar ters. This system is being extended to Kunply refrigerator cars, utilizing valu able space heretofore used for storing ice. In case of accident the car can be lighted from the adjoining car. Between the dining apartment and the pantry there Is a fruit closet, china closet and linen receptacles. The china closet Is mounted by a magnlfl oentcolored glass dome nnd the doors are inlaid with beveled plate glass and draped with olive green silk curtains. MANY CONVENIENCES. TJehlnd the china closet is the pantry, finished in mahogany, with eopper covered' sinks and hot nnd cold water fixtures, The interior Is compactly nfranffed wltn ice chests, cupboards, drawers and other appliances for quick service'. The kitchen adjoins the pan try and Is supplied with a safety range, hot apd.cold water, combination apart ments .for food supplies, Ice chests nnd a stationary steam table for keeping prepared stuffs warm. There Is also a separate vestibule dividing the pantry nnd; kitchen from the entrance pas erifcewy Into the. dining upartment. The Suiihury Dally has an article to the effect that the Pennsylvania Rail road company Intends abandoning the canal between Nantlcoke and North umberland and intends laying a track on the tow-path between the points named, giving more direct communi cation with Shickshlnny, Berwick. Hloomsburg and Danville, nnd making practically a double track between Nantlcoke and Sunbury. An otllcial of the Susquehanna Coal company In this city stated that in his opinion the canal will be kept oiien this year at least, although the coal com pany will not ship as much coal by the canal as In previous years.
